Confession of Sin — a Sermon with Seven Texts
Do Not Sin Against the Child
We thank God for your heart to share the good news of salvation so clearly and we join with you in lifting up all those who are seeking the Lord right now.

We rejoice that the gospel is simple and powerful, that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10. This is the promise we cling to, that salvation is not earned by our works but is the gift of God through faith in Jesus Christ. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. Ephesians 2:8-9.

We also affirm what you have said about confessing and turning from sins, for true faith brings repentance. Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out. Acts 3:19. And Jesus himself said, If you love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15. To follow and obey Jesus is the evidence of a changed heart that has been made new in Him. We are so encouraged by your exhortation to read and study Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, starting in the book of John, for there we meet Jesus fully. In John we read, For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16. And Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12.

We pray together for every soul who is searching today. Father in heaven, we come before you in the name of Jesus Christ and we ask that you draw those who are lost by your Holy Spirit. Open their eyes to see their need for a Savior and open their hearts to believe that Jesus died for their sins and rose again. Grant them the courage to confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and to turn from their sins to follow you. Wash them in the blood of Jesus, forgive them, justify them, and give them new life. Lead those who are new in faith to your Word, especially to the Gospel of John, that they may know you more and grow in obedience and love. Help them to continue in faith, to be baptized and to walk in your ways all the days of their lives. We thank you that whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved. Romans 10:13. We ask all this in the precious and only saving name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We were so encouraged by your heart to point others to Jesus and to make the way to Him clear and simple.

Thank you for taking time to share what has meant so much to you and for wanting others to know that same hope. That kind of care for people who are still searching matters, and we join you in praying that anyone reading your words who is seeking will take a next step toward Him.

You mentioned starting in John, and that is such a helpful place to begin. For anyone who is exploring faith right now, it can also help to not walk that road alone. If you are seeking, consider reaching out to a pastor or a trusted believer in a local church who can answer questions, help you find a Bible you can understand, and walk with you as you learn what it means to follow Jesus day by day. Salvation changes not only where we will be, but how we live now, and having community makes a real difference as that growth takes shape.

We are grateful for your witness and we are praying with you for every person who is searching.

Father, thank You for Your grace and for the gift of salvation through Jesus. We pray for each person who is seeking You today, that You would draw them close, give them clarity and peace as they seek, and surround them with people who can help them know You more. Guide them as they read and learn to walk with You. In Jesus' name, amen.

It is a joyful thing to hear of souls seeking salvation, for there is joy in heaven over one sinner that repents. The word you have set forth is faithful and true, that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Mark well the due order and the clear connection here. Faith comes first, confession follows. That which we privately and personally rest upon for salvation, we are to publicly and emphatically avow before others as the ground of our confidence. To believe with the heart is to trust not in our own prayers or repentance or works, but to rest wholly upon Jesus Christ crucified, who is all our salvation, the Alpha and Omega, the Author and Finisher of faith. And then with the mouth we are to say, and say it unmistakably, I am the Lord's.

And this faith is never alone. No faith can be genuine but such as is perfectly consistent with repentance for past sin, and no repentance is true but that which consorts with faith. They are as Siamese twins, they come into the soul together, and they live together as long as we live. Repentance lives as long as faith. The repentance that brings salvation is not a carnal repentance of the flesh, a mere fear of judgment, but a holy and heavenly work wrought in the renewed heart by the Holy Spirit, a repentance that gives God glory, that makes a rainbow with tears of grief for sin and glances of hope at the love of Christ and His great finished work.

Do not be discouraged if your faith seems but as a grain of mustard seed, or your repentance seems shallow. There are degrees of faith, and yet the least faith saves, so there are degrees of repentance, and the least repentance will save the soul if it is sincere. It is not the measure but the truth of it. The least faith in Jesus is the gift of God and is like precious faith. Look away from the liveliness of your own feelings to the finished work of Christ. Sincere faith treats all God's Word alike and obeys Him, for faith that accepted one word and rejected another would be faith in our own judgment and not in God.

You do well to exhort souls to turn from sin and to follow and obey Jesus, and to read and study the gospels, beginning at John, where Christ is most plainly set forth as the Lamb of God. Let every seeker make a personal confession, for his faith must be his own faith, his repentance must be repentance of his own sin, his coming to Christ must be his own coming. One shall say, I am the Lord's. Let it be so with you, not as a form or because others do it, but as the sincere avowal of a heart that has believed.

May the Lord, by His Spirit who works faith in us and through whom we wait for the hope of righteousness by faith, draw every seeking soul to look to Jesus alone and live. May He grant that godly sorrow which needs not to be repented of, and that simple trust which rests on Christ, and then may He give boldness to confess His name openly, to be baptized according to His command, and to walk in obedience to Him all the days of life.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
