As Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us, "Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching."

Continue to abide in Christ, for apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5). Walk in obedience to His commands, and let His Word dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16). The Christian life is not always easy, but it is always worth it, for Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33). Stand firm in your faith, and may the Lord bless you and keep you as you follow Him.

You grasp the very heart of the matter when you set forth that blessed passage from Romans. Confession with the mouth and belief in the heart, these are the divinely appointed way. Yet see to it that this confession is not a mere parrot-cry, but the irrepressible overflow of a heart that has truly trusted Christ. The order is ever this: the root of faith first, then the flower of confession. With the heart man believeth unto righteousness; that is the hidden work, the inward reliance upon the risen Lord. Then, and then only, with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. The word spoken before men is the genuine index of the grace wrought within.

But let none deceive himself. The faith that saves is never a lone wanderer; it travels with repentance as its inseparable companion. You speak of turning from sin, and you speak rightly. True repentance is not a passing shudder of remorse, nor a fright because judgment threatens. That is repentance after a carnal sort. The repentance which the Holy Spirit works gives glory to God. It takes sides with God against oneself, it abhors the sin because it is hateful to Him, and it looks with a tearful yet hopeful eye to the cross where sin was borne away. This repentance is not a bitter pill to be swallowed once and done with; it lives as long as faith itself. You will find sweet Sister Repentance the most charming company all the way to the gates of pearl. But remember, you rest upon Jesus Christ crucified, and not upon your repentance, your prayers, or your conquests of sin. Right away from anything that comes from you, look to Jesus, who is all your salvation.

Now, this faith that justifies is also a faith that obeys. Obedience is the highest practical courage, and the exactness of obedience is the very essence of it. Noah’s faith made him prepare an ark according to all that God commanded; he obeyed carefully, precisely, and at once. So must it be with you. A faith that will not submit to the yoke of Christ is a worthless sham. The kind of faith which produces obedience is lord of the understanding, a royal faith. It does not pick and choose among the commands of God, for sincere faith must treat all God’s Word alike. Prove that you have grace by your accurate obedience.

Do not delay because you think your heart must undergo some long preparatory process. Many are kept in bondage by supposing they must pass through a set course of terrors and despondencies. But the Gospel’s plan is simply, “Believe and live.” The prodigal did not linger in the far country tilling the fields to earn a robe; he came to the Father just as he was, in his rags, and the best robe was thrown upon him. Come now to Christ. Confess Him openly. Baptism and the Lord’s Table are His appointed ways for declaring your union with Him, but the daily confession of the mouth in your ordinary walk and conversation is equally vital. Say it unmistakably, “I am the Lord’s.” His faith must be his own faith; his repentance must be his own; his coming to Christ must be his own. Read the Word, especially that Gospel of John you are set upon, for there the glory of the Son of God shines out with midday clearness. May the Holy Spirit work in you that obedience of a child, the obedience of love, the obedience of faith.

You have well quoted the Apostle, that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. This is the short word upon the earth, holding salvation in a few brief words, a word that carries with it not only salvation but also righteousness. No need of a long circuit or the vexation of works; faith is the very short way. But let not that short word be short of meaning. For faith is perfected by the mouth confessing and the heart believing, and that faith must be living, not dead.

See then how John the Baptist came doing nothing else but bringing people to a sense of their own sins. His very garb declared repentance and confession, and he preached nothing else but “bring forth fruits meet for repentance.” For unless a man condemns his own sins, he will not hasten to the Redeemer to desire remission. The sorrow of the world works death, but godly sorrow works repentance unto salvation not to be repented of. So confess and turn from your sins, not with empty words but with a heart that mourns not for earthly losses but for its own guilt. By repentance you become more humble, and then you will long for and receive forgiveness.

And see how Christ Himself made the good confession before Pontius Pilate, testifying that He was born to bear witness to the truth. In that He endured, He learned obedience, and being made perfect through sufferings, He became the Author of salvation to all who obey Him. So if He, the Son, gained to show us the way, then as you confess Him as Lord, follow Him indeed and obey His commands. For not only is He saved, but you also must walk in that obedience which flows from a living faith. Let your reading of the Gospels, beginning in John as you have resolved, be no mere glancing, but a deep drinking from that fountain. There you will see His glory, full of grace and truth, and your faith will be strengthened.

And do not think that if you fall after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there is no remedy. For though there is no more a second sacrifice, no second cross, yet there remains repentance and propitiation through that one sacrifice by which He has perfected forever those who are sanctified. He does not cast away the fallen with despair; He is not the enemy of our salvation. Rather, Christ considers your salvation His own glory, for it is the glory of the lover of mankind that the saved should be many. So great is our Lord that even the Holy Spirit desires our salvation. Hold fast then, knowing that after being sanctified you yet have need of much faith, lest you be shaken. Nothing is of yourselves, but all of God. Therefore, with the mouth make confession to salvation, with the heart believe to righteousness, and with the life show forth repentance and obedience. Read, believe, repent, obey, and you shall taste that the Lord is good.

The Scripture you have set before people is the center of the whole gospel. Romans 10:9-10 makes the promise plain: if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. The heart believes and is justified, and the mouth confesses and is saved. This is not something to put off. Confess him now, while that confession is received as salvation. A day is coming when every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, but for those who wait until then, the confession will not be unto salvation. Bow the knee now, willingly, and receive the life he gives.

But salvation is not only a sentence spoken. It is a turning. Call on Jesus, and turn from your sins. He came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. To confess Jesus as Lord is to submit to his rule, to believe on him, and to obey him. Real faith is more than agreeing that God could save. It is trusting him to save you now and then following him. Obedience does not purchase salvation, but it proves the faith is alive.

You are right to point people into the Gospels, and beginning with John is wise. In John, Jesus is revealed as the eternal Word who became flesh, the one who gives living water and calls the dead to rise. He said that whoever has seen him has seen the Father. Let anyone looking for salvation read John slowly and notice who Jesus claims to be. Then go through Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and let the witness of those books deepen both understanding and trust.

Finally, stay close to Jesus. Do not follow at a distance. Peter fell when he was following afar off and warming himself by the wrong fire. If you are looking for salvation, come near to Christ, and keep coming near through prayer, Scripture, and obedience. When his commands seem beyond you, that is often where faith becomes real, because you have to obey and trust him to do what you cannot.

Let this be a time of genuine turning and new life for all who are seeking him. Amen.
