We rejoice in the truth of Romans 10:9-10, which declares, "that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." This is the foundation of our faith, the confession of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the belief in His resurrection, and the turning away from sin to follow Him. Salvation is not earned by works but is a gift of God’s grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

To those seeking salvation, we encourage you to truly examine your heart. Have you confessed Jesus as Lord, not just in word, but in surrender to His will? Have you believed in His resurrection, trusting that He conquered sin and death for you? And have you turned away from sin, repenting and seeking to live in obedience to Him? Salvation is not merely a one-time prayer but the beginning of a transformed life. As Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

We also urge you to immerse yourself in the Word of God, particularly the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, as you mentioned. Start with the book of John, which beautifully reveals Jesus as the Son of God and the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world. Let His words shape your heart and mind. As you read, pray for the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to the truth and draw you closer to Christ.

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for the gift of salvation through Your Son, Jesus Christ. We lift up those who are seeking You, Lord, and ask that You would draw them near. Open their hearts to receive the truth of Your Word and the reality of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Help them to confess with their mouths that Jesus is Lord and to believe in their hearts that You raised Him from the dead. May they turn away from sin and walk in newness of life, following You with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Lord, we ask that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit, guiding them into all truth and empowering them to live for You. Surround them with fellow believers who will encourage and disciple them in the faith. May they grow in the knowledge of Your Word and in the grace and love of Jesus Christ. We pray that their lives would be a testimony to Your transforming power, drawing others to You.

We rebuke any lies of the enemy that would seek to keep them bound in sin or doubt. We declare that they are forgiven, redeemed, and set free by the blood of Jesus. May they walk in the freedom and victory that Christ has won for them. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

Give them the courage to confess with their mouth and believe in their heart, and to begin that new direction with You. The soul that truly seeks salvation must look away from itself altogether. You have quoted the words of the apostle, and they are plain enough, confess with the mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in the heart that God has raised Him from the dead. Yet take care that you do not make a savior out of your own confession or a christ out of your own believing. The ground of your hope lies wholly outside yourself, in the finished work of the Lamb of God. We rest upon Jesus Christ crucified, and not upon our faith, our repentance, our prayers, our conquests of sin, or our likeness to Christ. Right away from anything that comes from us or to us we look to Jesus, who is all our salvation, the Alpha and Omega, the Author and the Finisher of faith.

Repentance and faith are never to be separated. They are twins born at the same moment and they breathe the same air. The repentance that has no faith in it is a legal sorrow that works death, and the faith that has no repentance is a dead presumption that will not stand in the day of judgment. True repentance gives God glory. It does not merely weep over the consequences of sin but over the sin itself, because it is against a holy and gracious God. And that repentance is not a condition you perform in order to win mercy, it is itself a gift of the covenant, a grace worked in the heart by the Holy Spirit. No conditions of nonsense! Salvation is of the Lord from first to last.

Yet the Word is clear that with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Let none imagine that a secret, silent faith suffices for a healthy Christian life. That which we privately rest upon for salvation, we are publicly to avow before men. Do not be ashamed to say unmistakably, "I am the Lord's." If you are timid and slow of speech, do not condemn yourself for that, there are those who cannot speak boldly but who can joyfully sit down and write their confession, and God accepts the honest testimony of a trembling tongue as readily as the eloquence of the learned. The main thing is that the confession is real, personal, and springs from the heart's own conviction. Nobody can perform your religion for you, your faith must be your own, your repentance your own, your coming to Christ your own.

And as for the measure or depth of these graces, be not cast down if you feel you have but little faith or shallow repentance. There are degrees of faith, yet the least faith saves. If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you can do wonders. The least repentance will save the soul if it is sincere. It is not the littleness but the faith itself that is precious. A living dog is better than a dead lion, and a drop of true grace is better than an ocean of pretense. Do not wait for great emotions or profound sorrows before you dare to believe. Come with your little faith, your trembling repentance, your imperfect confession, and cast yourself wholly upon the Lord Jesus. He will not break the bruised reed, nor quench the smoking flax.

Read the Scriptures as you have purposed, beginning with John, where the divinity and tenderness of Christ shine so brightly. There you will see that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. And as you read, cry to the Holy Spirit to make the Word living and powerful to your soul. For it is by the Spirit that we wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. He who began the work will carry it on. Repentance lives as long as faith, and we shall need to believe and to repent as long as we live. But oh, what sweet company they are! Sister Repentance and Brother Faith go with us all the way to the gates of pearl, and there we shall part with them only because we shall have no more need of their ministry in the land where there is no sin.

Seek no strange signs. Look not for visions and dreams. The Gospel is simple enough for a child to understand: repent, believe, confess, be baptized, and follow Jesus. The same sun which at noonday blinds the eagle is gentle enough at dawn to be looked upon by the tiny flower. Even so the Lord Jesus accommodates Himself to your weakness. Only come. Come now. Confess Him before men, and He will confess you before His Father in heaven. This is the full proclamation of the Gospel, and we have no right to leave out any part of it.

The confession of the mouth and the belief of the heart, as the blessed Apostle teaches, is indeed the gate of salvation. Yet let no one think that merely uttering words secures the promise while the heart remains far from God. For what does it profit to confess with the tongue that Jesus is Lord, if the life denies Him? The demons also confess and tremble, but they are not saved. True confession is born from a heart that has condemned its own sins, that has cried out with godly sorrow, and that has turned from wickedness with all its strength. This is the repentance that John preached, bringing men to a sense of their own evils, so that they might hasten to the Redeemer for remission.

If you seek salvation, then do not rest on any carnal confidence, not on lineage, not on past deeds. The hope of your salvation lies, after the lovingkindness of God, in your own repentance and a life of obedience. Christ Himself learned obedience through suffering and was made perfect, becoming the author of salvation to all who obey Him. Will you then refuse the narrow path? Examine yourself. Let that sorrow which is according to God pierce you, the sorrow that works repentance unto salvation, not to be repented of. The sorrow of the world over earthly losses works death, but grief over sin brings life.

And I charge you, do not delay, nor think that tomorrow is yours. The one Sacrifice has been offered; there remains no more sacrifice for sins, no second cross. But do not despair, repentance itself, with its tears and its medicine, remains. And what is the essential herb of this medicine? Almsgiving. Give alms, and all things are clean; water quenches fire, and mercy does away with great sins. Let your repentance bring forth fruits: prayer intense, works of mercy, a heart humbled.

As you read and study the holy Gospels, beginning with John, do not merely pass your eyes over the words. See there the good confession of our Lord before Pilate, how He witnessed to the truth. See His signs and His teaching, by which He leads you by the hand to the knowledge of God. Let the scriptures be your daily mirror; let them show you the image of Christ, until you are transformed into His likeness by obedience. I speak from a throne of responsibility, longing for your salvation. Give yourselves wholly to this work, that both now and in the world to come you may receive the eternal blessings, through the grace and mercy of the only-begotten Son of God. Amen.

You are pointing people toward the very heart of salvation with those verses from Romans. Confessing with the mouth that Jesus is Lord and believing in the heart that God raised him from the dead, that is the solid ground. There is no other way. But it is vital to understand that the confession must be more than a string of words. True faith lives in the heart and then reorders the life. If someone declares Jesus as Lord while walking in disobedience to his commands, their own actions call that confession into question. Genuine faith does not merely speak; it transforms the one who believes. That does not mean we are saved by transformation, we are saved by faith, but the faith that saves is never left alone. It produces a life that bears fruit.

You wisely added the call to turn from sin and to obey Jesus. That is not adding something to the gospel; that is the shape of a faith that is alive. When John the Baptist preached, he insisted on fruits that demonstrate repentance. In the same way, a person who has truly put their trust in Christ will find their desires, their direction, and their deeds changing. It is not that we look to those changes for our justification, God justifies us through faith alone, but we look to them as proof that the faith we profess is real.

The way anyone receives this salvation is by faith from beginning to end. You cannot earn the Holy Spirit by your efforts. You begin by trusting Christ, and you continue by trusting Christ. The Spirit is a gift, never a wage owed to you for your performance. Abraham’s faith was counted to him as righteousness, not because he found a way to be good enough, but because he believed God’s promise. In the same way, when a person today believes in the God who raised Jesus from the dead, who was crucified for our offenses and raised for our justification, that faith is credited as righteousness. Nothing can be added to that without corrupting it. If we try to improve our standing with works of the law or our own goodness, we step off the foundation and into trouble.

This is why pointing people to Scripture is exactly right. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. The Gospels, especially John, as you recommend, bring the voice of God directly to a seeking heart. They reveal who Jesus is, and as the Spirit works through those living words, he creates saving faith. Miracles and experiences may get attention, but they cannot produce saving faith. Only the Word can do that. So let those who are seeking begin with John and read it with an open heart, asking God to give them the gift of faith. That faith is not a blind leap; it sees further and clearer than sight alone ever could. By it we comprehend that everything visible was made by what is not seen, and by it we grasp that the Son of God has become the author of eternal salvation to all who trust him.

Be patient with those who are seeking, and be patient with yourself as well. Even the strongest faith can have its lapses. Scripture does not hide that men of great faith sometimes stumbled. But the promise is not anchored to the consistency of our feelings or the perfection of our performance. It is anchored to the word of God. At times, you may feel nothing at all, but you can still lean your whole weight on what God has said. That is not weakness; that is the very nature of faith.

So continue to hold out this good news: salvation is in Jesus Christ alone, received by faith alone, and evidenced by a life that follows him. Encourage every seeking heart not to halt short of full faith, but to press on, confessing him as Lord, turning from sin, and finding that he is faithful to finish what he begins in them.
