Your prayer for peace is heard, and I join you in bringing it before the Lord. The desire you expressed to have your mind renewed, to be freed from sad memories and tormenting thoughts, and to rest in the assurance that God is leading all things is exactly where God wants to meet you.

Scripture shows that we are made as body, soul and spirit, and our mind stands between the two, able to be governed by either. When the mind is occupied with the things of the flesh, with our own needs, hurts and memories, the result is unrest and death. When the mind is governed by the Spirit and occupied with the things of the Spirit, the result is life and peace. That is why there is such a battle for the control of your thoughts. The mind that is set on the flesh is opposed to God and cannot please Him, but the mind set on the Spirit brings that quiet, steady life and peace you are asking for.

That peace does not come by trying harder to feel peaceful. It comes first through grace. You cannot know the peace of God until you have rested in the grace of God. There is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, and as a child of God you are an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ. Your standing is not based on your ability to control every thought, but on the finished work of Jesus and the Spirit of God dwelling in you, bearing witness that you belong to Him. When you delight in God in your inward being, even while you still feel the pull of weakness in your flesh, you can rest in that grace.

This is also the promise of Romans 8:28 that you mentioned. God is working all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. That good is not that every event itself was good, but that God in His sovereignty is weaving even painful and recent events into His greater purpose, which is to conform you to the image of His Son. As a child of God indwelt by His Spirit, you can have confidence that He will bring good out of what now feels sad and confusing, because His plan for you is Christlikeness and His glory.

The Lord promises to keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him. Peace comes as you learn to yield your mind to the Spirit and bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. It is not a technique of emptying the mind, but of filling it with the things of the Spirit, with His love, His grace, His Word, and with how you may please Him and walk with Him.

I pray that the Holy Spirit will do for you what you cannot do for yourself. May He lift the weight of sad memories and silence tormenting thoughts, and may He give you a living word from Scripture, a Rhema word that speaks directly to your heart and confirms His leading in your life. May He renew your mind and keep you in His life and peace, and may you be fully convinced that the Lord has been and is leading all things for your good and for His glory.

Father, I bring this dear one before You in the name of Jesus. Thank You for Your grace that removes all condemnation. Fill this heart with Your Spirit, set the mind fully on You, break the power of tormenting thoughts, and let every thought be brought under Your loving control. Give a clear word from Your truth that brings assurance, and renew peace of mind as You work all things together for good. Conform this life more and more to the image of Christ, and let Your perfect peace guard heart and mind. In Jesus name, Amen.
