The sorrow of a divided household is a grievous affliction, and where earthly inheritance is concerned, how often division comes because of selfishness and pride. As it is written, there was a division among the people because of Him, and to this day where Christ is not enthroned in the heart, division will remain among brethren. We grieve with you that what should have been a legacy of provision has become through forty years a field of strife, with structures raised without right, parcels conveyed without lawful title, and warnings despised.
We are reminded that there is an inheritance which God has prepared for His saints and given to them by a Covenant of Salt, and it is exceedingly broad. When we first come to Christ by faith we enter into our inheritance, for we obtain the pardon of sin, and we survey a measureless inheritance that no earthly acre can equal. Let this be the first comfort to your mother, that her true portion is not in these fields alone, but in Christ, in whom the title deeds of our inheritance are made sure. In the great sacrifice of His dear Son He has satisfied all claims of justice and He acts justly when He blesses largely those for whom Jesus died. No lawyer need examine those deeds, for they are signed in the blood of the Saviour.
Yet concerning earthly justice, we know that our God is slow to anger. The lictor of divine justice carries his axe bound up in a bundle of rods, for He will not cut off men until He has reproved them that they may repent. He is slow to threaten and slow to execute, giving space for repentance. But the same word declares that He will not at all acquit the wicked. His justice is unimpeachable. No man who stands condemned can lift his finger to murmur against Him, for His law is glorious in holiness. Justice itself demands that wrong be addressed, and unless men turn to Him with full purpose of heart, that justice must take its course.
There is therefore a twofold plea to be made. First, that Justice which once stood as an accuser against us has been fully satisfied at Gethsemane and at Calvary, where the Saviour bore the fiery hail of wrath that sinners deserved, where His soul agonies and His dislocated bones upon the cross made full payment. There Justice was satisfied, so that God can be just and yet the justifier of him that believeth in Jesus. We pray that every member of this family, your mother and her siblings and their children, may look there and see that pardon is offered to the repenting sinner, and that God in justice must forgive the repenting sinner according to His promise. Without this, no distribution of land will bring peace.
Second, we pray for that earthly justice which belongs to lawful authority. We entreat the Lord that the appointed administrator may execute his critical responsibility with integrity and fairness, without partiality or fear of man, that he may act as one who must give account to God who judges righteously. We ask that what has been done unlawfully may be brought into the light, that what is right may be established according to law, and that compensation where due may be rendered to those who have been denied their legitimate portion.
