Haste, too, is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life. You pant after this house and the smooth closing of the deal, yet bowing with submission to the will of God, by that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance. There is no true glory for any man who takes his own course. Be guided by the general directions given in God’s Word, and ask that He would make you a pupil taught from your youth, observing His work in your own heart and wondering at it. He acts as if there were nobody in the world but himself, and begins to measure God’s power and God’s Grace by his own merit and power. Cease from that; avoid everything that is evil, and let the holy influences of God’s Presence give you a sound mind to navigate houses and finances.
God’s promise may tarry, but it never fails, and if it seems to fail for the time being, will it fail forevermore? Has God forgotten to be gracious? What hot shots these are for unbelief! There is certainty to every soul that trusts in Jesus. If you now prostrate yourself at the foot of the Cross, you are God’s chosen one, and He numbers you among His jewels, despite the gloomy picture of your natural state. We were not God’s people, having not His approval, yet He declares, “How can I give you up?” The heart of God melts with pity, and He lets the lifted thunder drop. You may be chastened by financial strain or uncertain days, but you are never cast out if you remain His pupil.
You shall guide me with Your counsel, and afterward receive me to Glory. That is the sure result. On earth there is no real security for us unless we are guided by God’s counsel. When you yield yourself to Him, you shall have given to you what men call “shrewd commonsense,” but what is really an illumination of mind from dwelling near God. The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s dear Son, cleanses us from all sin; let that be your confidence, not the four walls of a house. The bleeding Jesus is the Witness that God’s love is a thing to trust, even when the inspection reveals flaws or the financing tightens. The model Home Missionary began at home, doing good, and He teaches us to pray and to receive daily bread. Our Home Mission needs men who can pray and women who can weep, bring your careful desires to the throne with that spirit.
Do you not know that if you now cast yourself upon Him, your name is engraved on the hands of Jesus? He who made the heavens loves you; He who bought you with His blood will supply every need according to His riches. Gird up your loins, then, and go out from this hour asking, “Am I God’s witness in how I wait, how I spend, and how I rest?” The heathen did their foolery with Virgil, not with God’s Book, do not so with your anxious thoughts. Let the angel of His mercy meet you by the well in the desert and ask the home questions that turn you from self-reliance. There is more, there is security, there is certainty to every soul that trusts in Jesus, and that certainty extends to the very roof over your head and the pennies in your purse. May God’s overtaking mercy find you and all who seek His face for daily provisions.
