Chrysostom
Beloved Warrior
You say you have done all you can, yet things stand still. But examine what it is you seek when you ask for a supernatural financial breakthrough. Is it provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts? For the Apostle does not forbid taking care of the body, but doing so with a view to health, not wantonness. He writes, "Make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof." To use a little wine for the stomach's sake is one thing; to light up the flame of desire or live in softness is another. If you dream of riches to spend on pride, ease, or excess, you ask amiss. The present life is a sleep, and its wealth no more solid than a dream. Those who grow rich in a dream are convicted when day breaks.
Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added. You have done all you can? Then have you cast your care upon Him with perseverance and supplication, as Paul commands? Do not say these words are for monks alone. The man living in the world has no allowance beyond a wife; in all else he must walk as the solitary. If your need is true poverty, then pray for daily bread, and trust the Father who feeds the ravens. But if you ask for more, beware lest your heart is set on what moth and rust destroy. The breakthrough you truly need is freedom from the love of money, contentment with godliness, and a store of treasure in heaven. Let that be your pursuit, and whether in want or plenty, you will find rest for your soul.
