Bringing the King Back
Return to Christ now and restore His reign in your heart for true joy and purpose.
We hear your cry and we join with you in this place of emptiness and dryness, and we bring your crushed spirit before the throne of grace together in Jesus' name.

What you are describing is a spiritual thirst that no physical water can quench. Our souls were made to be filled with the living water that only Jesus can give. As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. Psalm 42:1-2. And Jesus said, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life. John 4:14. On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. John 7:37.

We want to encourage you that God is not far from you in this dry season. He sees this emptiness and He draws near to it. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18. We thank you that you called upon the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that this thirst can be satisfied. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. There are seasons when we feel dry even without knowing why, and sometimes it is the Lord allowing us to feel our need for Him so that we will seek Him more earnestly. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water. Psalm 63:1.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up this precious soul to You. You see the emptiness and the dryness inside, the crushed spirit and the thirst that will not go away. Lord, we ask that You pour out Your living water upon this heart. Fill this emptiness with Your Holy Spirit, with Your presence and Your peace that surpasses all understanding. We ask that You renew and refresh this soul as only You can. Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters Isaiah 55:1, and we come now to You, Lord Jesus, the fountain of life. Heal the crushed spirit, restore joy, and let Your well of water spring up inside to eternal life. Draw this dear one close, speak tenderly, and remind them that they are loved, seen, and held by You. Lead them to hunger and thirst for righteousness, for You have promised that those who do will be filled. Matthew 5:6. Give rest to this weary heart, for You have said Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28.

We encourage you to keep seeking Him daily even in this dryness. Open His Word and let Him speak to you, especially in the Psalms, and pour out your heart to Him honestly in prayer, for He hears. Stay in fellowship with other believers who can walk with you and pray with you, and ask the Lord to show you if there is any sin, worry, or burden that needs to be confessed and surrendered to Him, so that nothing hinders His filling. He is faithful to restore and to satisfy, and this dry season will not last forever. We will continue to pray that the Lord will fill your emptiness with His fullness and turn your dryness into a well watered garden by His grace.

We have read your words about feeling so empty and dry inside, your spirit crushed and thirsty in a way drinking water could not ease. Not knowing why makes it even harder, and we are grateful you reached out to ask for prayer.

We want you to know you are not alone in this heaviness, even when it feels that way. Emptiness like this does not mean you are forgotten or that something is wrong with your faith. Sometimes our hearts and bodies carry burdens we cannot name right away, and it takes time and gentle care to understand what is happening.

It can help not to sit with this alone. Would you consider sharing honestly with one safe person today, a pastor, a trusted friend or family member, or a counselor, just to let someone know how crushed you feel? If this dry, empty feeling continues, please also consider reaching out to a doctor or counselor alongside prayer, so you have support close by.

Father, we bring our friend before you in Jesus name. You see this emptiness and the dryness no water could quench. Draw near with your comfort, give a little breath and rest today, and guide each next step with wisdom and caring people nearby. Amen.

The emptiness and dryness you describe, and that crushed state of spirit, with a thirst which common water cannot quench, is a sorrow well known to many of the Lord's people, and it is not hidden from Him who sees the heart. There is a thirst of the soul which no well on earth can satisfy. The body may drink and thirst again, but the spirit thirsts after God, after Christ, after living water, and until that is given the soul remains dry and empty.

Remember that our blessed Lord said upon the cross, I thirst, and by that thirst of His you are delivered from the terrible thirst which once devoured you. He suffered that you might never thirst as you did when first awakened to your need. For He has said, he that drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but it shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. This is not water from the cistern of self or of the world, but the living water which Christ alone can give. Seek not to fill your emptiness with that which cannot fill it. Thirst after more of Christ. Thirst to know more of Him, to be more like Him, to have closer communion with Him.

This thirst is not satisfied but by the Holy Spirit, for only when the Holy Spirit comes is there any life and force and power. Without Him we utterly fail. Our entire dependence must be upon Him. He is the Spirit of holiness and of consolation and of enlightening, and His blessed work is to take of the things of Christ and show them unto you. When you are dealing with the things of Christ you are on Holy Spirit ground. That Spirit which does not glorify Christ is not the Spirit of God, but the true Spirit ever glorifies the Saviour, showing His blood, His righteousness, His fulness to the weary soul. Cry then mightily unto God for Him. The same Spirit who once wounded the heart can also cause it to rejoice in full salvation, for the Spirit worketh all good things, sometimes in silence and sometimes with power, but always to bring Christ near.

Take care that you grieve not that blessed Spirit by unbelief. An exceedingly tender Spirit is He, and He is grieved when we doubt the promise and the power of Christ to save and to satisfy. Turn from such unbelief and look again to Jesus, for if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of His, but where the Spirit dwells there is liberty and life and the seal that you are the Lord's.

Let us pray for you before the throne of grace.

O Lord God, look upon this weary and empty soul, crushed and dry, athirst and not satisfied. Thou knowest the heaviness of spirit and the inward drought. Come, Holy Spirit, Thou Spirit of holiness and consolation, and breathe upon this dry ground. Take of the things of Christ and show them to this thirsting one. Show His finished work, His precious blood, His power to save to the uttermost all who come unto God by Him. Forgive all unbelief and wash away all sin for Jesus sake. Give faith to receive Him, and let that faith be as a well of water springing up within, that this soul may thirst no more after vanities but be filled with Christ. Quicken, enlighten, comfort and seal this heart unto the day of redemption. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who alone is salvation, and who alone can satisfy the thirsty soul. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your cry of emptiness and dryness has been heard, and it is right to bring it to the Lord. The thirst you feel that water cannot quench is the thirst of the soul, and it points to a deeper need that only Christ can satisfy.

Jesus stood and cried, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water. He does not draw us by force, but he calls those who are inflamed with desire to come to him. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. The desire you feel, painful as it is, can become a holy longing if you turn it toward him, and like a thirsty man who eagerly drains the cup, you can learn to receive and retain his word until you are satisfied.

There are reasons the spirit can feel crushed and dry. The flame of the Spirit is quenched when the oil fails, when mercy and love grow cold, when we overlay the heart with things that are cold and damp to the fire. All evil doing extinguishes that light. And when that light is quenched, we walk as on a dark road, exposed to many doubts and temptations. The enemy sends fiery darts, doubtful reasonings and distresses that set the soul on fire and bring uncertainty. These are quenched only by the shield of faith, by trusting the promises of God and resting on the glory that is to come.

So keep the eye of your soul clear. As the eye is the light of the body, so the mind is the light of the soul. If the eye is healthy the whole body is full of light. Keep your sight single toward Christ. Do not be afraid that you will be forsaken in this dryness. Look at the generations of old and see, did ever anyone trust in the Lord and was forsaken, or hope in him and was put to shame. He does not despise a thirsty heart that comes to him.

I pray for you now in the name of Jesus. Father, you see this crushed spirit and this deep emptiness. You know the reason even when your child does not. Have mercy and draw near. Forgive sin, cleanse the heart, and kindle again the flame of your Holy Spirit. Give oil to the lamp, give light to the eyes, give faith to quench every fiery dart. Let this thirsty soul come to Christ and drink, and cause rivers of living water to flow within. Fill the emptiness with your presence, restore joy, and teach this heart to hunger and thirst for righteousness until it is filled. Grant peace, strength, and a renewed desire for your word day by day. In Jesus name, Amen.

Your description of feeling empty and dry and crushed inside, and of being thirsty in a way that drinking water could not help, is very understandable, and I am praying for you in Jesus name.

What you are feeling points to something deeper than a physical or even an emotional need. God made us as three part beings, body, soul and spirit. The body has its own thirst and needs. The soul, which is our mind and emotions, has its own thirst as well. But there is also a thirst of the spirit, a thirst for God Himself. Jesus spoke about this when He talked with the woman at the well. He told her that everyone who drinks of that well water will thirst again. That is true of every physical thing we try to use to satisfy ourselves. It may help for a moment, but the thirst returns.

Jesus also said, if anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He was not talking about physical thirst, but about that deep spiritual thirst in every person for a living relationship with God. God created us with that emptiness inside on purpose, so that we would be drawn to Him to be filled. Trying to fill it with other things will only disguise it for a little while. It cannot satisfy the spirit.

The Bible teaches that we have two births. One is the birth of the body, being born of water, our natural birth. The other is being born of the Spirit, the spiritual birth. Apart from that new birth our spirit is dead and has no fellowship with God, because God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth. We meet God in the realm of the spirit. When a person is born again through faith in Jesus Christ, the spirit is made alive. Then the Spirit of God can join with our spirit and bear witness that we are children of God, and we can have communion with Him, be led by Him, and know His peace.

That is why Jesus said that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. When the Spirit is alive in us, He begins to rule in our lives. Our minds become occupied with the things of the Spirit, with how to please and worship God, and to be spiritually minded brings life and peace. Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.

If you are feeling this emptiness, the invitation of Jesus is to come to Him and drink. Come to Him in simple faith, ask Him to forgive your sins through His death and resurrection, and ask Him to make your spirit alive and fill you with His Holy Spirit. His words are spirit and life, and as you turn to Him, feed on His Word, speak to Him in prayer, and sow to the Spirit, you will reap of the Spirit everlasting life. You cannot overcome the dryness and the power of the flesh in your own strength. It is by the Spirit that the deeds of the flesh are put to death so that you can truly live.

I pray for you now. Father, I lift this dear one to You who feels empty and dry and crushed in spirit and does not understand what is happening. Lord Jesus, You see this thirst that water cannot quench. You promised that whoever comes to You and drinks will never thirst in that deep way again, but will have living water flowing within. I ask that You reveal Yourself as the one who alone can satisfy this thirst. Bring new birth by Your Spirit, make the spirit alive, forgive sins, and fill this heart with Your presence. Let Your Holy Spirit bear witness with their spirit that they are Your child and an heir with Christ. Teach them to walk in the Spirit, to be led by the Spirit, and to be controlled by the Spirit, so that instead of emptiness there will be fullness, instead of dryness there will be a well of living water springing up. Give life and peace and a true worship of You in spirit and in truth. In the name of Jesus, amen.
