We hear your fear and we want to bring it into the light of God's truth with you, for we understand how heavy the fear of rejection and punishment can feel.
What you are describing is not the voice of the Holy Spirit condemning you, but fear, and God has not given us that spirit of fear. As it is written, God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control, 2 Timothy 1:7. And perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love, 1 John 4:18. The fear that God is waiting to snatch away your being chosen, or to withdraw His blessings, favor and provision because you listened to a secular band you liked in the 90s, is not how our Father relates to His children.
We want to gently correct this understanding of how God sees you. If you are in Christ, you were chosen by Him before the foundation of the world, not because of your performance in music choices, but by His grace, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before him in love, Ephesians 1:4. Jesus Himself said, I give eternal life to them. They will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand, John 10:28. We do not keep our chosen status by never making a misstep, and we do not lose it by listening to a song. The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable, Romans 11:29. His blessings and provision are not wages we earn by perfect behavior, but gifts from a good Father, for every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, James 1:17.
We also notice you spoke of God but did not mention Jesus Christ, and we must lovingly say there is only one way we have access to the Father and assurance that we are chosen and forgiven. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. It was Jesus who bore the punishment for all our sin on the cross, He was pierced for our transgressions, Isaiah 53:5, so that for those who trust in Him, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:1. God does discipline those He loves, Hebrews 12:6, to restore us, but He does not punish His children with rejection. He has removed our transgressions as far as the east is from the west, Psalm 103:12. Nothing can separate us from God's love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord, Romans 8:38-39.
That does not mean music does not matter, and here we want to encourage you with discernment rather than fear. Not every secular song is equally harmful, but not everything is helpful either. We are called to guard our hearts, for out of it is the wellspring of life, Proverbs 4:23, and to let our minds dwell on whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, Philippians 4:8. We are to let the word of Christ dwell in us richly, Colossians 3:16. If those romantic songs are simply about tender, faithful love that honors marriage between a man and a woman, that may not be sinful in itself. But if the lyrics glorify fornication or adultery, which is sex before or outside of marriage, or lust, or ungodly views of love that lead you away from purity and from Christ, then we would encourage you to turn away from them, not because God will reject you if you listen, but because you want to keep your heart and mind pure before Him. We have freedom in Christ, but we want to ask, does this music build me up, does it lead me closer to Jesus, or does it stir up desires and thoughts that do not honor Him, 1 Corinthians 10:23.
So we encourage you to bring this fear to Him honestly, cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you, 1 Peter 5:7, and let Him replace fear with peace. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:6-7. You are not rejected, you are adopted, for you didn't receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, Abba Father, Romans 8:15.
We pray together for you now.
Father, we come before You only in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, who alone has made a way for us to be called Your children. We thank You for this dear one who is afraid of being rejected and punished, and we ask You to reveal Your perfect love that casts out fear. Assure this heart that being chosen is Your gracious work and that no song can snatch them from Your hand. Forgive any sin through the blood of Jesus and help them to walk in the assurance that there is no condemnation in Christ. Give them Your peace that surpasses understanding and a sound mind free from tormenting fear. Give them discernment about what they listen to, that they would love what You love and turn from what defiles, that their mind would be renewed and filled with what is pure and lovely and true. Help them to enjoy Your favor and provision not as something to be earned and lost, but as the steady care of a faithful Father who withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly. Lead them deeper into the knowledge of Jesus, that they may know they are fully accepted and secure in Him. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.
