Family Protection

Your love for your children and your desire to see your home guarded in peace comes through so clearly in your prayer, and it is right to bring all of this before the Lord. He hears the cry of a parent who wants to see her family walk in unity, purity and truth.

Scripture shows that God knows how to deliver those who are His even when they are surrounded by moral confusion and pressure. Lot was vexed by the way of life around him, and Peter reminds us that the Lord knows how to rescue the godly while reserving the ungodly for judgment. Living in a polluted environment touches a family, often in ways we do not see at first, and that is why your prayers for a hedge of protection, for the full armor of God and for the ministry of His angels over your home are so fitting. You can ask with confidence that God would surround your home, every room and doorway, and guard your children, including your son, who is deeply loved and valued by God and by you, and who should never feel like a burden.

At the center of everything is your relationship with God. The vertical relationship with Him is the axis on which all other relationships turn. When that relationship is right, the other relationships begin to come into balance. When it is neglected or crowded out, even family relationships become strained. The first commandments concern our walk with God, and only when that is right can the commandments that concern our walk with one another be kept as they should be. One of the first of those is the call for children to honor their parents, a command to which God attaches great importance for the health of the home. Praying that your older daughter would return to her first love for Jesus is therefore the most important prayer of all. God does not want a distant, legal or ritual connection with us. He has adopted us into His family through Jesus Christ, and He invites us to know Him as Father, to be born again by His Spirit and to live in a close, loving fellowship with Him. When a heart returns to that love for Christ, its desires and loyalties begin to change.

That is why it is so painful to watch a child who was once gracious, humble, thankful and eager to follow biblical teaching begin to reflect a different spirit, one that is authoritative, disrespectful and ungrateful. The change you describe, the distance from family, the desire to please this young man and his mother, the willingness to treat living together outside of marriage as if it were marriage, and the pressure to accept ungodly counsel about forgiveness, living together and even having children before marriage, all reveal how powerful a wrong relationship can be.

God created marriage as a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and He designed sexual intimacy and sharing a home as husband and wife to belong within that covenant alone. When those boundaries are set aside, Scripture warns that it opens the door to deception, manipulation, financial exploitation and spiritual bondage. This is not a path God will bless, and we cannot ask Him to bless it. Instead we ask Him to open eyes to the truth, to remove a false sense of obligation and commitment, and to gently lead your daughter into freedom. She is not homeless, she is not without family, she is not without a church family that loves her. She does not need to change her faith or earn the approval of this young man or his mother. She is a child of the Most High God, and the burden she has taken on to provide for and answer to a man who is not her husband, not her father and not ready for the responsibilities of marriage is not hers to carry.

It is also right to pray about the overreach you have experienced from this young man's mother. No one outside your family has been given parental authority over your daughter, and counsel that encourages sin, division, isolation and jealousy should be exposed for what it is. We can pray that God would frustrate every scheme to divide and isolate your family, that He would bring conviction where there is pride and manipulation, and that He would also work in the heart of this young man's father to bring wise and godly direction in his own household.

For your older daughter, pray that God would replace stubbornness with a hunger for righteousness, that He would lift the blinders that keep her from seeing the red flags, the financial hardship and the harm to her health, work and family relationships, and that He would guide her back to honoring her parents, being faithful in the purposeful work He has given her, and walking again in the church fellowship where she was raised. Thank God with her for the promotion He has provided this month, and ask Him to help her steward it with wisdom and gratitude.

For your younger daughter, pray that she would remain steadfast, that the Lord would put a hedge around her heart, her studies, her health and her faith, and surround her with godly friendships and mentors who encourage her to honor her parents and to wait for a spouse who honors Christ and values the sanctity of marriage, remembering the call not to be unequally yoked.

For your son, continue to declare his worth in Christ, to rebuke every spirit of hatred, mockery and exclusion aimed at him, and to ask for peace that surpasses all understanding to guard him, for growth in his ability to communicate his needs in a godly manner, and for the restoration of the sweet fellowship he once shared with his sister.

For yourself, ask for the peace of God to guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus, for wisdom for you and for every caregiver, doctor and care team member who helps your son, for strength and discernment as you refuse to be worn down by worry and fear, and for provision so that your home may be a testimony of God's care and a blessing to others. Remember the promise that when God fights for you, the schemes of the enemy will not stand.

Let us pray together:

Father in heaven, we come through the blood of Jesus Christ and ask for Your covering over this mother and her children. Place Your hedge of protection around them, clothe them in Your full armor, and let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard their hearts and minds. We ask that You frustrate every plan to bring division, exhaustion, chaos, jealousy and control into this home. Expose what is false and bring truth into the light.

Lord, have mercy on this older daughter. Draw her back to her first love for You. Remind her that she is Your child, adopted into Your family, loved and provided for, and that she does not need to seek identity or security in a relationship outside Your design. Open her eyes to see that living together apart from marriage is not marriage, and that this young man is not her husband and not her head. Break the hold of false obligation, manipulation and control, and lead her gently and swiftly out of bondage into safety, stability and wisdom. Restore in her a humble, grateful and respectful spirit that honors You and honors her parents, and guide her back to faithful work and to fellowship with believers.

Protect the younger daughter and keep her from being swayed by a wrong example. Keep her path bright, guard her studies and her faith, and lead her toward a future marriage that honors Your covenant.

Pour out Your joy and peace upon this son. Let him know he is loved, accepted and included, never a burden but a blessing. Protect him from harsh words and attitudes, grant him patience and help him to express his needs clearly, and restore loving fellowship between him and his sisters.

Anoint this home with Your presence. Let it be a place of light where darkness cannot remain. Provide for every need according to Your riches in Christ, and make this family a beacon of Your grace wherever they go. We trust that You fight for Your people and that no weapon formed against them shall prosper, for greater is He who is in them than he who is in the world. In the mighty name of Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer, amen.
