Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You have asked for protection over your household, and sealed the request with the name of Jesus. That is a strong name, a name that scatters every danger. But see that you do not only speak the name while your heart clings to what He forbids. He is Lord, and He protects those who follow Him. He said, “Let him take up his cross and follow Me.” Do you follow? Then fear no evil. He who is conscious of no grave sin shall suffer nothing dreadful; only he who does evil has reason to tremble. So if your conscience is clean, why be anxious? He who sees the light of this world is safe; how much more the one who stays near Christ.
I note you mention silent requests. Why silent? The Lord knows them already, but He desires you to speak. When the sick come to the physician, they do not send another to state their need; they cry out themselves. So bring every hidden grief, every unspoken fear, directly to Him. He is not offended by your urgency. Only make sure your life does not contradict your lips. If you pray for protection yet live in luxury, carelessness, or injustice, you mock Him. As it was in the days of Noah, people ate and drank and felt secure, and the flood came suddenly. So do not presume on His patience. Let your house be marked by mercy, by the poor welcomed to your table, by servants justly treated. Then the prayers of the needy will rise for you, and your sleep will be untroubled. God hears those who hear Him and do His will. So pray boldly, but live uprightly, and you shall find the protection you seek.
