The first and most vital matter is to receive the blessing yourself before you can expect it to flow into your business. "I will bless you" comes before "you shall be a blessing." Seek first that your own soul is right with God through Jesus Christ, cleansed from all filthiness and from all idols. From everything that was wrong in the business, from everything that was wrong in your own heart, "From all your filthiness will I cleanse you." If there is any secret sin, any sharp dealing, any neglect of His day, any idolatry of gain, bring it out and hang it up before the sun. God will not suffer one single promise of the Covenant to be unfulfilled, nor one single blessing to be kept back, but He will not give the blessing of His presence to those who mind earthly things.
Cast yourself entirely upon the double blessing of "Grace" and "peace" which comes from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. He who made Heaven and earth can speak into your darkness and cheer the gloom of your despair. Does the blessing of Him who brought order out of chaos rest upon you? Then trust Him to bring order out of your financial chaos. Faith first receives the blessing and then produces holy work. You must get the blessing yourself, for until it can be said to you, "I will bless you," it cannot be said, "You shall be a blessing."
When the Lord blesses a man, He makes that man to be a blessing to others. Perhaps He has placed you in this business that you may be a blessing to your own family, to your employees, to every customer who enters your door. Good servants and honest tradesmen can contribute much to the well-being of all around them. Let this be your prayer: "O Lord, make me a blessing here!" The sweet perfume of family piety and upright dealing will blow out at the doors and windows and spread a balmy influence around. You may bring your children to receive a father’s blessing, and count themselves rich therein, but how much more the blessing of your God upon the labor of your hands.
Go about your business with all your might as doing God’s business, not sleeping over your service of the Lord. If ever you are thoroughly awakened, awake now. And while you work, keep on blessing God from morning till night, and then go on blessing God till the last hour of life. A happy, consecrated life spent in blessing God, this will save you from murmuring, and discontent will be ejected by the spirit of thankfulness. The Lord fills a man that he may overflow with blessing for those around him. May He cause you to walk in His statutes, and as you do, may He add His almighty blessing for Jesus' sake. Amen.
