The eye is a lamp to the body, and when it suffers, the darkness is felt through every limb. Yet know this: the Lord who made the eye shall surely keep it as the apple of His own. Is it not written, "Keep me as the apple of the eye"? That prayer was heard, and so shall yours be, if you commit your cause to Him who neither slumbers nor sleeps. The very light that enters the body through that delicate gate is but a shadow of the true Light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. Seek first that your inward eye be made single, fixed wholly upon Christ, and the outward trouble shall be but light affliction.
Healing leaves are found in the Tree of Life, and the least thing about our Savior is full of restoring virtue. Do you remember that when Jesus taught, the healing power was conspicuously present? Those who came to Him found that His word and His touch were one medicine. Go then with your blind eye of understanding, your limping faith, and lay hold upon His promise. You have not to rub the eye or work it into some singular position, simply let the light of His countenance fall upon you, and at once it conveys health to the soul, and often to the body as well.
Yet let your good resolution be founded upon a good reason. If you would have that left eye restored, be sure that your eye be single toward God’s glory. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways, and even his petitions waver. But when the heart is fixed, trusting solely in the finished work of Christ, then pardon and healing are placed in happy conjunction, and both are bestowed when they are least looked for. What you call ill may yet be turned into your good, for the leaves of that healing tree are an infallible antidote to every poison.
Come just as you are, with the maimed hand of your faith and the limping feet of your energy. He who had the eagle’s eye to see our sicknesses and the lady’s hand to gently apply the heavenly ointment is near you now. Though the archers shoot, their arrows cannot reach the pinnacle where faith stands. Be still, and know that He is God. If He delays the outward cure, yet He will give you grace to see His purpose, and that is better than sight itself. Wait upon Him, and your report shall be good, for the Lord’s report is always faithful.
