We join you in bringing this relationship before the Lord and we hear your desire for reconciliation and for forgiveness and acceptance from both families. We also want to gently and lovingly help you see this situation through the lens of Scripture so that our prayers together align with God's will rather than our own wishes.
We notice you pray that God will reconcile you when He brings you back together, as if reconciliation is already determined to be His will. We must humbly surrender even our deepest desires to Him and pray first for His perfect will to be done. Scripture reminds us to trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6, and to not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God Romans 12:2. We are also taught that this is the boldness which we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us 1 John 5:14. It is possible that God’s will is restoration, and it is also possible that His will is healing and moving forward separately in His grace. We must pray for clarity, wisdom and submission to what He knows is best, and not assume we can direct His hand.
We also want to address the nature of the relationship itself. In Scripture, being a boyfriend or girlfriend is not casual dating but courtship with the goal of discerning marriage to another Christian believer. We believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman as God designed it, for this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh Genesis 2:24, and what therefore God has joined together, don’t let man tear apart Matthew 19:6. Marriage should be strongly endorsed as the godly goal, rather than simply returning to a dating relationship or partnership. We encourage you to seek whether this man is a fellow believer, for don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers 2 Corinthians 6:14, and whether a restored courtship would be pursued in purity and accountability toward a marriage that honors Christ. If there was any sexual intimacy outside of marriage while you dated before, Scripture calls that fornication and we are told to flee sexual immorality 1 Corinthians 6:18 and that marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral Hebrews 13:4. If that was part of your history, we encourage you both to confess it to God, receive His forgiveness, for if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9, and to commit to purity going forward, for this is the will of God, your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality 1 Thessalonians 4:3.
We also hear your heart for forgiveness between families. That desire is very biblical. We are commanded to bear with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do Colossians 3:13, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Ephesians 4:32. Forgiveness is commanded whether or not reconciliation of the relationship occurs, and trust is rebuilt over time with proven repentance and changed character. It is loving and wise that families may have concerns after hurts have happened, and honoring them and listening to godly counsel is part of walking in wisdom. If anyone of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally James 1:5.
We also noticed your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ. We say this in love because it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If we have not believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, trusted in His death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins and confessed Him as Lord, we have no basis to approach God. If you have not yet done so, we encourage you to believe with your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord Romans 10:9, and you will be made a new creation in Christ 2 Corinthians 5:17. It is in His name alone that our prayers are heard.
So we pray together with you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, asking first for Your will to be done in this situation. We lift up this dear one and the former loved one, and both of their families. Lord, You know the hurts that were caused, the words and actions that need forgiveness. We ask that You would give each person a heart to forgive as You have forgiven us, and to release bitterness and extend grace. We pray for healing where there has been pain, and for humility and repentance where there has been wrongdoing. If there was fornication or any impurity, we ask for Your forgiveness and cleansing and for a new commitment to purity that honors You.
Lord, if it is Your good and perfect will to restore this courtship, we pray that You would make that unmistakably clear through Your Word, through godly counsel, through peace and through open doors, and that any restoration would be centered on You, with both individuals walking as believers, equally yoked, pursuing marriage as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman for Your glory. Teach them to seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness Matthew 6:33 and to delight in You and trust Your timing Psalm 37:4. If it is not Your will to reunite them, we pray for grace to accept Your answer, for comfort, and for guidance toward a godly spouse in Your time for each of them if You will marriage for them. Give wisdom to both families to love, to forgive, and to speak truth with kindness, and help all involved to rebuild trust in a way that is healthy and accountable.
We ask for Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard hearts and minds in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:7. We surrender this desire to You and ask that You would be glorified above all. We pray all of this in the precious and only saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.
We encourage you to continue to seek the Lord daily in prayer and in His Word, to invite wise and mature believers and pastors into this discernment, to honor your family and his family, and to wait patiently on the Lord for His direction. Whether He leads to restored courtship toward godly marriage or to separate paths of healing, we trust that He will work all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose Romans 8:28.
