We have heard your heart in this situation and we are bringing it before the Lord together with you, seeking His wisdom and protection in Jesus' name.
We want to gently address a few important biblical principles with you. You have described this past relationship as unequally yoked with one who is not a Christian and involved in a cult, and also as psychologically abusive. Scripture is very clear that we are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness with iniquity, or what communion has light with darkness 2 Corinthians 6:14. This is not just about differing beliefs, but about the foundation of a future marriage, which God intends to be a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman who both love Christ, where a husband loves his wife as Christ loved the church Ephesians 5:25. Psychological abuse is never a reflection of that kind of love, and it is not God's will for you to be harmed or to remain in a harmful courtship. Any courtship should be with the goal of finding a godly spouse who is a believer in Christ, not a partner or a return to an abusive and unequally yoked relationship. We also want to lovingly note that you spoke of God directing you, but you did not mention the name of Jesus Christ in your request. We want to remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father, as Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is by putting our faith in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we are saved and can confidently bring our prayers to God.
We understand your confusion about feeling directed to unblock this ex when you have wisely kept boundaries in place, and your concern about what he might think and your humility in acknowledging ways you also hurt him. We want to encourage you with discernment here. God does not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7, and He calls us to test the spirits to see whether they are of God 1 John 4:1. Sometimes what we sense as a direction needs to be tested against Scripture, wise counsel, and the peace of God. The Lord also calls us to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves Matthew 10:16 and to guard our hearts with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life Proverbs 4:23. Keeping a boundary such as blocking someone who was psychologically harmful is not unbiblical or unforgiving, it can be an act of wisdom and stewardship of the heart God has given you to protect.
We also hear your tender conscience about having hurt him and that he may be justifiably upset. It is good and biblical to own our part and to seek forgiveness where we have sinned, for we are called to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Ephesians 4:32. If the Lord brings conviction about specific ways you hurt him, we can confess that to God and, if it is safe and wise and does not reopen a harmful dynamic, seek to make amends. Yet forgiveness and even repentance do not always mean reconciliation or restored close contact, especially where there has been abuse and where he remains outside of Christ and involved in a cult. We are to, if it is possible, as much as it is up to us, be at peace with all men Romans 12:18, but that does not require us to place ourselves back in harm's way or to pursue a relationship that God would not have for a future marriage.
If God did prompt you to unblock, it may not be for the purpose of rekindling communication or relationship at all, but perhaps to pray more specifically for his salvation and deliverance from deception, or to release fear and entrust the situation fully to God. God is near to those who are of a broken heart, and saves those who are of a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18, and He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3. We can pray for this man without needing to be in direct contact with him.
We encourage you to seek wise, godly counsel from a pastor or trusted mature believers in person before taking further steps, to ask God for wisdom, for He gives to all liberally and without reproach James 1:5, and to not feel condemned if wisdom dictates that you re-establish that block for your safety and peace. Your obedience to Christ and your protection matter to God.
We pray together for you now.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You together and lift up our sister to Your throne of grace. Lord, we thank You that You see her heart, her confusion, her desire to obey You, and her compassion even for one who harmed her. We ask for Your clear wisdom and discernment to surround her. If this prompting was from You, make Your purpose unmistakably clear in a way that aligns with Your Word and brings peace, not fear or confusion. If it was from her own heart, anxiety, or the enemy, we ask You to gently correct and redirect her and to guard her from harm. We pray You would heal the wounds left by psychological abuse, restore what has been broken, and help her to fully forgive as You have forgiven us, while also giving her strength to maintain healthy, biblical boundaries. We pray for this ex, that You would open his eyes, deliver him from the cult and from darkness, and draw him to salvation through Jesus Christ alone. Lead him to true repentance and faith if it be Your will. Help our sister not to worry about being misunderstood, but to rest in knowing that You see her motives. Lead her future steps regarding courtship and marriage, that she would be drawn only to a godly Christian man who will love her as Christ loves the church and with whom she can build a marriage that honors You, keeping herself pure and honoring You with her body and heart, for You call us to flee sexual immorality 1 Corinthians 6:18 and to honor marriage Hebrews 13:4. Fill her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding and guide her every decision. We ask all these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.
