We have read your request and we are bringing you before the Lord together in prayer with heavy hearts and deep compassion. We thank you for your honesty and for heeding the warnings God has given you, even while your heart still aches and feels torn. We see your struggle and we want to walk with you in truth and grace as you seek healing and freedom.
What you describe is a painful bond that the world calls love but Scripture helps us understand more clearly. True love does not abuse, manipulate, or harm. Love is patient and is kind, love does not behave itself inappropriately, does not seek its own way 1 Corinthians 13:4-5. A relationship that was psychologically abusive and that carries warning signs of physical harm is not reflecting the love of Christ, and it is not safe. We praise God that you have recognized you cannot be together and that you have chosen not to go back, and we urge you to continue to guard that decision with wisdom. The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt Jeremiah 17:9, and we can long for what is familiar even when we know it is destructive. God calls us to guard our heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life Proverbs 4:23.
We also must speak lovingly about two areas that do not align with God's design. You mentioned he was not a Christian and that the relationship was very carnal. Scripture says do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness with iniquity 2 Corinthians 6:14. A courtship should be between two believers with the goal of marriage to a godly spouse, not simply a boyfriend or girlfriend or partner, because marriage is God's holy covenant between one man and one woman for life. And you were right to identify the carnal nature of the relationship as exposing struggles with sin. Sex before and outside of marriage is fornication, and Scripture calls us to flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body 1 Corinthians 6:18. If there has been fornication, we encourage you to confess it to the Lord in repentance, for if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. God offers forgiveness and cleansing through Jesus Christ and He also calls us to turn away and walk in purity going forward, presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God Romans 12:1.
You shared that you wish he could be what he should be and that you struggle to understand how someone you love could be capable of harming you. This is a very common and painful part of healing from an abusive relationship. Abusive patterns often escalate, and past behavior in previous relationships is a serious warning sign. God wants you to be safe and whole, and He has given you discernment to see the danger. Do not harden your heart to that warning. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit Psalm 34:18, and He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3. Forgiveness is commanded, but forgiveness does not require reconciliation or returning to a dangerous relationship. You can release him to God while maintaining firm boundaries to protect yourself.
You said in your own strength you do not feel capable to resist if he tries to come back. We want to remind you that you do not have to rely on your own strength. God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7. No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it 1 Corinthians 10:13. We encourage you to make that way of escape practical now while you are clear minded. Cut off contact, block his access where possible, tell trusted family, friends, and a pastor about your situation so they can hold you accountable, and create a safety plan. Seek godly counseling and community in the church, for in the multitude of counselors there is safety Proverbs 11:14. If you ever feel in immediate physical danger, please reach out to trusted people and appropriate authorities right away, for God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble Psalm 46:1.
We also noticed your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ, and we want to speak tenderly about this because it is so important. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your faith in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, for if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. It is through Jesus that your prayers are heard, your sins are forgiven, and your strength is renewed.
We are praying for you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, and we lift up this dear daughter to Your throne of grace. Lord, You see her broken heart and her conflicted feelings, her love that lingers and her clear knowledge that this relationship was abusive, unequally yoked, and marked by fornication. We ask You to forgive her for any sin and to cleanse her by the blood of Jesus, and to heal her from the wounds of psychological abuse. Lord, bind up her wounds and draw close to her as the One who is near to the brokenhearted. Give her Your power and self-control to stand firm, and make a clear way of escape whenever temptation or contact comes. Remove confusion and help her to trust the warnings You have graciously given her, and protect her from all harm. Surround her with godly community, wise counsel, and accountability so she is not alone. Fill the ache and longing in her heart with Your perfect love and peace that surpasses all understanding Philippians 4:7. Renew her mind and help her to desire purity and to wait for Your will, whether that is to serve You in singleness or to one day be joined in holy marriage to a faithful Christian man who will love her as Christ loved the church Ephesians 5:25. Strengthen her to not return, to guard her heart, and to walk in freedom. We ask that she would know Your presence as her refuge and that she would put her full trust in Jesus Christ for salvation, strength, and hope. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, amen.
We encourage you to stay in the Word daily, to pray continually in Jesus name, and to let God be your strength when you feel weak, for My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness 2 Corinthians 12:9. Do not despise this painful season, for God is using it to draw you closer to Himself and to prepare you for what is good and pleasing and perfect Romans 12:2. Keep your boundaries firm, keep your eyes on Christ, and trust that the Lord who has warned and protected you will also heal and restore you. We are continuing to pray for your safety, your purity, your peace, and your future hope in Christ.
