Beloved Servant
My ex was involved in a false religion and in hindsight, I now see that in breaking up with him, God saved me from being drawn into a cult. My ex is very charismatic and manipulative and psychologically abusive. He genuinely has the potential to become a cult leader (and there are signs he may already be trying to become one). Please pray he would be stopped along with this false religion he is in. Pray for his and his loved ones' salvation and for the salvation of those in this group. Thank you.

We thank God with you that He in His mercy opened your eyes and delivered you from being drawn deeper into deception and bondage, and we praise Him for saving you from that relationship. What you describe is not love, for love does not manipulate or abuse, and the Lord sees the harm that was done to you and He is your refuge and healer. We agree with you that no one should be drawn into such darkness and we join you in praying that this false religion would be exposed and stopped.

Scripture warns us so clearly about this very danger. We are told, Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. Matt 7:15 and Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1 There were false prophets also arose among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction. 2 Pet 2:1 And no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light. 2 Cor 11:14 A charismatic and manipulative spirit that seeks control over others and draws people away from the truth of Christ is not from God, and we rebuke that deception and we pray that the Lord would bring it to nothing. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Eph 6:12

We also want to gently point out that your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ, and we want to ensure you know that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and that anyone can be saved, including your ex and those trapped in this group. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 If anyone preaches any other good news than the gospel of Christ, let him be cursed. Gal 1:8 This is why we pray for salvation for them, that they would turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. The Lord desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth. 1 Tim 2:4

We encourage you to remain firmly separated from this man and from this group, to continue to test everything against the Word of God, to stay rooted in a Bible believing church where you can receive wise counsel and protection, and to allow the Lord to heal the wounds left by psychological abuse. Remember that you are to be equally yoked with a fellow believer in Christ if you court in the future with marriage as the goal, for God designed marriage between a man and a woman to reflect Christ and the church, and He will guide you to a godly spouse in His timing. Guard your heart and mind in Christ and do not be drawn back into any contact that would open the door to further manipulation.

We pray together now for you and for all those involved.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You and we thank You for delivering our sister from deception and abuse. We ask You to heal her heart and mind, to restore what the enemy has tried to steal, and to surround her with Your peace and truth and with godly community. Lord, we lift up this former boyfriend and his loved ones and every person entangled in this false religion. We ask that You would expose every lie, that You would stop the spread of this deception, that You would break the power of manipulation and control, and that You would draw each one to repentance and to saving faith in Jesus Christ alone. Let no weapon that is formed against Your people prosper, and let those who are captives be set free by the truth of Your Son. We pray that You would protect the vulnerable from being led astray and that Your gospel would shine brightly in this darkness. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our Lord, amen.

Thank you for sharing something so painful and confusing with us. We hear the clarity you have now that stepping away was God's protection, and also the burden you still carry for your ex, his loved ones, and others drawn into this group.

What you describe, that charisma paired with manipulation and psychological pressure, is often how spiritual harm works. At its core it is about excessive control, using spiritual language or authority to steer people, keep them close, and make it hard for them to think clearly or walk freely with God. Seeing that pattern can help make sense of why the relationship felt so disorienting, and why distance has brought such relief.

We are grateful you are safe. As you continue to heal, it can help to stay rooted in a healthy local church where you are known and supported, and to process what you went through with one trusted pastor or counselor who understands spiritual manipulation, rather than carrying the concern alone. Keeping clear boundaries with your ex is also wise, and letting others pray with you for discernment for those still involved.

We are praying with you.

Father, we thank You for guarding our sister and leading her out of harm. We ask You to restrain what is false and harmful in this group, to protect those who are vulnerable, and to draw each person, including her ex and his loved ones, to know Jesus truly and be saved. Give her peace, wisdom and steady fellowship as she heals. In Jesus' name, amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect, deliver, heal, save (those not saved) and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. I ask this for them, us and all in need. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

With thanksgiving we join you in praising God for His merciful deliverance. What you have described is indeed cause to say with the Psalmist, I will praise You for You have heard me and have become my salvation. The Lord has looked down from the height of His sanctuary, from heaven He has beheld the earth to hear the groaning of the prisoner and to loose those appointed to death, and He has done this great thing for you.

We see in your words the hand of a gracious Father. Our afflictions may come distinctly from man as the result of malice or manipulation, and yet they may come with even greater certainty from the Lord as the necessary outcome of His special love to us. For this reason we may wisely moderate our anger against second causes and perceive that our smarts and sorrows come from our Father's hand, that we may say, the will of the Lord be done. It is not killing but curing that God means when He takes the sharp lancet in His hand. He has delivered you from going down to the pit, and the reason is found not in you but in Himself, for He has said, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom. That ransom is His own Son who bore the penalty for sinners.

We also remember that He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds. The wounds left by charismatic manipulation and psychological abuse are deep, and the balm must come from Christ alone. We pray that the Lord will continue to heal you, to calm the heart that has been agitated and to take the furrow from the brow, and that you will be kept in grateful remembrance of this deliverance, for the more talk we get from the mouth of faith the better, and a silent faith robs God of His glory.

We join you in prayer according to the truth of the gospel, that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone and that He alone is able to deliver from the power of darkness.

We pray that the Lord in His sovereignty would stop the progress of this false religion and expose its error, that no more would be drawn into its darkness. We pray that He would restrain what is manipulative and abusive and would not permit a work of deceit to grow into a cult to ensnare others.

We pray for the salvation of this man who once was near to you, that God who is mighty to save would bring him to see his need, to repent and to trust in Christ who loved us and gave Himself for us. We pray that the same mercy would be shown to his loved ones and to all who are now in that group, that the Father who has delivered us from the power of darkness would translate them also into the kingdom of His dear Son, giving them knowledge of the truth and life through the ransom found at the cross.

We pray that the Lord would give you continued protection, discernment and peace, and that you would pant for more knowledge of Christ while being deeply grateful for what you have already received. If He has delivered you from so great a power of darkness, He will deliver you all the way through.

We ask these things trusting that God finds the reason for deliverance in Himself and in the ransom He has provided, and that He is good and His mercy endures forever. May you be kept charmed with what God has done for you and ever lauding and magnifying the name of the Lord. Amen.
