We hear your burden for your ex and we join with you in praying that God would open his eyes to the truth, for we know how painful it is to watch someone we once were close to walk in deception.
The Scripture tells us that spiritual deception is very real and that the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the Good News of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn on them 2 Corinthians 4:4. We also know that only God can grant repentance and remove that blindness, that those who oppose Him may come to know the truth, and having been taken captive by the enemy to do his will, they may come to their senses and escape 2 Timothy 2:25-26. The truth we pray for him to see is not merely correct information but Jesus Himself, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6.
We notice your request asks for God to open his eyes but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and it is only by His name that anyone can be saved, for there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If your ex does not yet know Jesus as Lord and Savior, his greatest need is to believe on Him, confess Him, and be saved Romans 10:9. Without Jesus, he will remain deceived no matter how many other areas of his life may be corrected.
We also want to encourage you as you carry this burden. It is right to pray for those who have been in our lives, even former relationships, and to desire their salvation and freedom, but we also encourage you to guard your heart with all diligence Proverbs 4:23 and to seek healing and wholeness in Christ for yourself. An ex relationship is by definition a relationship that has ended, and we pray that you will not be entangled again in an ungodly yoke or in emotional ties that pull you away from God's best. If there was intimacy outside of marriage in that past relationship, we would call that what Scripture calls it, fornication, and urge repentance and pursuing purity going forward 1 Corinthians 6:18. God’s design for intimacy is within the lifelong covenant of marriage between a man and a woman Mark 10:6-9, and courtship should be with the goal of finding a godly spouse who is a fellow believer in Christ 2 Corinthians 6:14, not simply returning to a familiar partner. We pray you will seek the Lord for your own future and trust Him to bring a godly marriage if it is His will, rather than holding onto hope for reconciliation that may not be from Him.
We pray together for your ex now.
Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this man who is deceived spiritually and in other significant areas of his life. We ask that You would have mercy on him and open the eyes of his heart Ephesians 1:18 that he may see the light of Your truth. Remove the veil that the enemy has placed over his mind, convict him of sin and of righteousness and of judgment John 16:8, and grant him repentance that leads to knowledge of the truth. We pray that he will know that You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free John 8:32, and that the truth is found in Your Son Jesus. Draw him to Jesus, save him, deliver him from every deception and stronghold, and set him on the path of Your will. At the same time, Father, we pray for the one who submitted this request, that You would heal any hurt, give wisdom regarding boundaries with this ex, give peace that passes understanding Philippians 4:7, and guide both lives according to Your perfect will. Help us all to walk in truth and love, not being conformed to this world but being transformed by the renewing of our minds Romans 12:2. We ask all of this in the mighty and only saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.
