Good and Faithful Servant
I recently posted this: "I recently broke up with my ex boyfriend because we were very unequally yoked. Please keep him in your prayers for his health as he has many health issues. Please also keep him in your prayers regarding his mental health. His health issues have obviously affected him emotionally and he has also told me before the loneliness and isolation he has struggled with due to the passing of his mother and brother a few years ago and also due to women previously not wanting to date him due to his health problems. I love this man more than anything and I want to be there for him so badly but I know that it won't work between us as a couple unless something changes because we're too unequally yoked. At present, he has shut me out of his life due to anger from me breaking up with him. I knew it from the beginning that us dating was not in God's will and I never should have started anything with him knowing that. I made a big mistake due to wanting attention, being fleshly and disobedient, etc. Now he is hurt and I truly love him but can't be with him. Please pray for him. Pray for his salvation and his freedom from false teachings. And I honestly have to just ask for prayer that if he does come out of the wrong things he believes in, that if God wants it, he and I could marry. I want to even be there for him as a friend if possible but I just don't know if that will happen." I just want to add: He is SO close to the truth and maybe I didn't do a good job of being brave enough to challenge the wrong beliefs and lifestyle habits he has. He has a heart for Christ but he's deceived in seriously wrong things. Thank you.

We hear your heart, dear sister, and we grieve with you over the pain of this broken relationship. Your love for this man is evident, but we must first acknowledge the truth of Scripture: "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what communion has light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14). You were right to recognize that this relationship was not in God’s will, and we praise God for giving you the wisdom to end it, even at great personal cost.

Your confession of disobedience in pursuing this relationship is a mark of humility and repentance. We all stumble, but the Lord is faithful to forgive when we turn to Him (1 John 1:9). You sought attention and comfort in the wrong place, but now you are seeking God’s will above your own desires. That is the path of wisdom. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6).

We must also address the reality of the sin in this situation. While you did not explicitly mention it, we must assume that this relationship involved sexual intimacy outside of marriage, which is fornication, a sin that grieves the heart of God (1 Corinthians 6:18). We do not say this to shame you, but to call you to full repentance and to remind you that God’s grace is sufficient to cleanse and restore you. His mercy is greater than our failures.

Now, let us lift this man before the Lord with fervent prayer. We pray first and foremost for his salvation. "The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). We rebuke the deception that has taken hold of his heart and mind. The enemy seeks to blind him to the truth, but we declare that the eyes of his heart will be enlightened by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:18). We pray that he would be set free from every false teaching and every lie that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. "You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free" (John 8:32).

We also pray for his health, both physical and emotional. The loss of his mother and brother has left deep wounds, and the enemy has used loneliness and rejection to isolate him. But the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). We ask that God would surround him with godly believers who can speak truth into his life, love him unconditionally, and point him to Christ. We pray that he would find his identity and worth in Jesus alone, not in the approval of others or in his physical health.

As for your desire to marry him, we must surrender that longing to the Lord. "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4). If it is God’s will for you to be together, He will make a way, but it must be on His terms, not yours. That means this man must first be born again, walking in repentance and faith, and fully submitted to Christ. Until then, you cannot be unequally yoked. We pray that if God intends for you to be his wife, He will bring about a miraculous transformation in his heart.

In the meantime, we encourage you to guard your own heart. "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it" (Proverbs 4:23). It is natural to want to be there for him as a friend, but you must be cautious. If being around him stirs up old feelings or tempts you to compromise, it may be wise to step back for a season. Seek the Lord’s guidance in this, and surround yourself with godly counsel. "Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established" (Proverbs 15:22).

We also want to gently challenge you in your role in this situation. You mentioned that you may not have been brave enough to challenge his wrong beliefs and lifestyle habits. While it is not your responsibility to save him, you are called to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). If you ever have the opportunity to share the gospel with him again, do not shrink back. "Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear" (1 Peter 3:15). But remember, your words must be seasoned with grace and backed by a life that reflects Christ.

Let us pray together now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this sister and the man she loves. Lord, we thank You for her honesty and repentance. We ask that You would cleanse her from every sin and fill her with Your peace. Help her to trust in Your perfect plan, even when it is painful.

Father, we lift up this man to You. We ask that You would break the chains of deception in his life. Open his eyes to the truth of the gospel and soften his heart to receive it. Lord, we rebuke every lie of the enemy that has taken root in his mind. We declare that he is fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and that his worth is found in You alone. Heal his emotional wounds, Lord, and surround him with Your love. Bring godly people into his life who can speak truth and life into him.

If it is Your will, Lord, we ask that You would bring this man to salvation and transformation. If You intend for him to be this sister’s husband, we pray that You would make a way for that to happen in Your perfect timing. But above all, we pray that Your will would be done, not ours.

Father, we also ask that You would guard this sister’s heart. Give her the strength to wait on You and the wisdom to know how to navigate her relationship with this man. Help her to trust in Your goodness, even when she cannot see the outcome.

We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). We thank You for Your faithfulness and for the hope we have in Christ. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
