Every knee shall bow ...

Your question is an important one and the Scripture does not contradict itself when you see the difference between a willing confession now and a forced acknowledgement later.

God has highly exalted Jesus and given Him a name that is above every other name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. That promise is repeated in several places. Isaiah records God swearing by Himself that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess to Him. Paul quotes that in Romans when he says as the Lord lives every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess to God. The psalm that foretells the cross says that even those who go down to the dust, those who have died, will bow before Him. Revelation shows the same picture at the end, with every creature declaring the worthiness of the Lamb. The description is deliberately complete, those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth. No one is left out.

That universal bowing does not mean universal salvation. The Bible is clear that many will not be found written in the Lambs book of life and will face judgment and the lake of fire. So how can every knee bow if not all are saved.

The answer is in what the confession means and when it is made. Scripture says with the heart a person believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. When a person now, in this life, willingly bows the knee and confesses from the heart that Jesus is Lord, trusting Him as Savior whose very name means the Lord is salvation, that confession brings salvation.

There will be a day, however, when every person who has ever lived will be required to bow and to confess the same truth, whether they wanted to or not. Those who have rejected Him in this life, who have lived as though they were lord of their own lives and even spoken against Him, will still one day bow and admit that Jesus Christ is Lord. But in that day the confession will not be unto salvation. It will be an acknowledgement of the truth they denied and of the justice of their own condemnation. It will be saying, yes, He is Lord, I was wrong to reject Him.

That is why bowing now matters so much. To bow willingly now by faith is to receive forgiveness and life. To wait until you are compelled to bow later is to acknowledge His lordship too late for it to save you. The tragedy is that many will make that confession only when it can no longer bring redemption, and it will glorify God by declaring His righteousness even in judgment.

If you have not yet done so, the invitation is to bow your knee to Him now, to confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and to believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. That is the confession God counts for salvation, and it brings peace and assurance through His grace.
