Emotional healing - father and brother

Your sorrow over your father and the ongoing pain with your brother has been heard, and we join you in bringing it before the Lord.

Grief after losing a father is deep, and it is right to mourn. Scripture calls us to weep with those who weep, and many carry hidden griefs at home, one for a spouse, another for a child, another for a parent or sibling. You are not alone in this kind of sorrow, and God does not despise a grieving heart. He sees the sadness you have carried since your father's death last year, and He is near to comfort and to heal in His time.

The hurt you feel with your brother is also understood. To feel constantly disrespected, overlooked and devalued, especially while you must work together to care for your aging sick mother, is a heavy burden. You describe him as mocking those who believe in God and trusting only what he can see and touch and measure. The Scriptures speak of this attitude, when a person respects neither father nor brother nor God Himself, and treats faith as a fable to be laughed at. That hardness of heart is not against you alone, but shows a soul that has not yet been softened toward God.

It helps to remember that there are different kinds of love. Natural family ties are strong, but they can be wounded and can fail. There is a higher love that comes down from above, a spiritual love that does not depend on benefits or on how we are treated, and is not easily overthrown by injury. God calls us to that love, which seeks the good of the other even when we are hurt. At the same time, wisdom is needed. Loving your brother does not mean accepting constant harm or pretending the disrespect does not hurt. It means seeking peace where possible, setting clear and calm boundaries, and not returning insult for insult.

As you must remain in contact to care for your mother, ask the Lord for sobriety of mind and steady wisdom. Honor your mother together as God commands, and try as far as it depends on you to keep that shared work free from quarreling, especially before others who do not believe. The goal is not to win an argument or to take revenge, but as Jesus said, to gain your brother. That gain happens only when God changes a heart. No brother can redeem another, only Christ can. Salvation is through Jesus alone, and your brother's greatest need is to meet Him.

We pray for you now. Father in heaven, we ask in the name of Jesus Christ for Your healing upon this grieving heart. Comfort the sadness over a father's death and mend the wounds left by a difficult brother. Grant wisdom for every conversation and decision in caring for a sick mother, with grace to speak truth calmly and to set healthy boundaries without hatred. Soften the brother's heart, open his eyes to see that faith is not a fable, and draw him to salvation in Christ. Guard this dear one from bitterness, fill the place of loneliness with Your presence and with faithful companions who will weep and rejoice at the right times, and make spiritual love strong where natural strength has failed. Help to overcome evil with good and to rest in the knowledge that You will reward each according to Your perfect justice and mercy. Amen.
