Emotional and Financial Abuse by ###

My husband is hurting me severely because he is in a financial position to pay for me to see my mother who lives in another province and is very ill with Motor Neurone Disease but refuses to pay for me. When my father died my husband would not allow her to stay with us so that I could look after her so she remarried and moved away.

We are truly heartbroken to hear about the emotional and financial abuse you are experiencing at the hands of your husband, as well as the difficult circumstances surrounding your mother's illness. We want you to know that you are not alone in this trial, and that God sees your suffering and hears your cries.

Firstly, we want to address the issue of abuse. Abuse of any kind is not tolerated in a godly marriage. God's design and will for marriage is for husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church, giving Himself up for her (Ephesians 5:25 WEB). This means that husbands are to cherish, protect, and nurture their wives, not cause them harm or distress. The Bible tells us that God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16 WEB), but it also tells us God hates putting away (divorce) and it also tells us that God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. In 1 Peter 3:7 WEB, husbands are commanded to live with their wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman, as to the weaker vessel. If your husband is not willing to do that and is harming you, emotionally and financially, then this is not acceptable or biblical. If your husband is not a believer and is not willing to fulfill his godly role or live with you in an understanding and biblical way, then we would urge you to seek help and support from your local church or a trusted Christian counselor. This may include temporary separation for safety and to initiate change in your husband's actions. God does not require you to stay in an abusive situation, but He does require you to handle the situation with wisdom, grace, and truth.

Regarding your husband's refusal to support you financially, the Bible is clear that husbands are to provide for their wives and families. In 1 Timothy 5:8 WEB, it says, "But if anyone doesn't provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever."

We also want to address the spiritual aspect of your request. We noticed that you did not mention the name of Jesus Christ in your request. It is only by the name of Jesus that we have access to God the creator of the universe, and the only one who can address the deepest needs of our hearts. If you have not already, we would urge you to put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ, who is the only way, the truth, and the life, and the only way to the Father. For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12 WEB)

Let us pray for you:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before You today, lifting up our sister who is hurting emotionally and financially at the hands of her husband. Lord, You know the depths of her pain, and You see her every tear. We pray, dear Jesus, that You would intervene in this situation and bring an end to the abuse. We ask that You would soften her husband's heart and bring him to a place of repentance for his sins against her and against You.

Father, we pray for Your provision and comfort for our sister as she walks through this difficult time with her mother. We ask that You would make a way for her to be reunited with her mother, that she may care for her and say her goodbyes.

Lord, we also pray for the salvation and repentance of the husband if he is not saved. We ask that You would draw him to Yourself and that he would come to know You as his Lord and Savior. And that he would begin to understand the role and responsibility he has toward his wife.

Holy Spirit, we ask that You would fill our sister with Your strength, wisdom, and guidance as she navigates this trial. Give her the courage to seek help and support, and guide her every step of the way.

We ask all of this in the powerful and precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Please know that we are here for you, and that we are praying for you and your family during this time.

We're here for you, dear sister. We're so sorry to hear about the emotional and financial abuse you're enduring, and the strain of your mother's illness. It's heartbreaking, but please know you're not alone. God sees you, He hears your cries, and He's walking with you through this storm.

We want to remind you of God's love for you. In Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." He's inviting you to lay down your burdens, including the pain and hurt you're feeling. Trust in Him, and He will give you the strength and peace you need.

Regarding your husband, we understand that you're in a difficult situation. The Bible teaches us that husbands should love their wives as Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:25). This means cherishing, protecting, and nurturing, not causing harm or distress. If your husband is not living up to this, it's not acceptable. We encourage you to seek help and support from your local church or a trusted Christian counselor. Remember, God does not require you to stay in an abusive situation, but He does require you to handle it with wisdom, grace, and truth.

We also want to encourage you to keep praying for your husband. In 1 Peter 3:1-2, we're told to win our husbands without words, by our conduct. Keep praying for his heart to be softened and for him to come to know the love and grace of Jesus.

Lastly, we want to remind you of God's provision. He promises in Philippians 4:19, "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." Trust that He will provide for you and your mother's needs.

Let's pray together:

"Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You today, lifting up our sister who's hurting. Lord, we ask that You would comfort her, give her strength, and guide her every step of the way. We pray for her husband, that You would soften his heart and bring him to a place of repentance. We ask for Your provision and comfort for her and her mother. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."

Lord, we pray for this prayer and family for blessings healing and salvation. Heal and bless. May their lives be a praise and glory unto thee.
Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.
