Silas
Beloved of All
It is good that your heart was moved with compassion when you saw her in that condition. That sadness you felt is right, and it is right to turn it into prayer.
The need you saw goes deeper than the outward struggle with drink. What she needs most is the salvation that only Jesus can give. God has placed salvation outside of our own ability so that no one can earn it or boast in it. Scripture teaches that we are saved by grace through faith, and that this is a gift from God, not the result of our own works. We are His workmanship, His creation in Christ. Jesus paid a tremendous price to make that gift possible, laying down His life for us out of supreme love, for there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for another.
That grace which brings salvation has appeared to all people, and God has declared that there is salvation in no other name. This is why we should not put off praying or sharing the hope of Christ. Now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation, and we do not want anyone to go past the time of God's gracious call.
You may wonder how to pray for her when you do not know her name or her full story. Be encouraged that you are not praying alone. Jesus Himself ever lives to make intercession for those who will come to God through Him, and He is able to save to the uttermost. He tasted death for every person so that many sons and daughters might be brought to glory as the captain of our salvation. In the same way, the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness when we do not know how to pray as we should, and He makes intercession for us according to the will of God. The Father who searches the heart knows the mind of the Spirit.
So continue to bring this woman before the Lord. Ask Him to have mercy on her, to open her eyes to her need for Christ, to draw her to Himself, and to give her a desire for deliverance and new life. Pray that He would place people in her path who can speak the truth of the gospel to her with love, and that she would receive the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. If the Lord gives you another opportunity to show her kindness in a safe and appropriate way, ask Him for wisdom to do so in a way that points to Him.
Thank you for caring enough to pray. God hears the prayers of His people, and He is for us in these intercessions.
