Your troubling dream has been laid before the Lord and heard with much care, and I would have you know at once that the fear which seized you in the night is not unknown to our gracious Saviour, for He condescends to our condition and sympathizes with us in every position into which Providence may cast us. Saints are often downcast when terrors press upon them, but we are never to think ourselves forsaken when such darkness gathers, for Jesus is near though we may not perceive Him.
Do not receive into your heart the word that was spoken to you in the dream, that another's spirit is in you or that you are called to be mother to those who called you. The Scriptures do not teach that the spirit of another dwells in us in this manner. Our life and identity are given by God alone, and such a claim is a suggestion of the adversary who would lay a false name and a false calling upon you. The bear, the girl with eyes that seemed blind yet stared, the strange language which you yet understood, and the company dancing and chanting with the red scarf and its symbol, all speak after the manner of the powers of darkness which would invite you to come away with them. You were right to be terrified and right to refuse to go.
Observe the mercy of God in the vision itself. You were within, and they could not break in or get past the door. Though there was a hole and an eye looked through, the door held. This is a picture of restraining grace. The Lord sets bounds to the enemy and keeps His own. Your own effort with the black stick did nothing, and she did not flinch, to show you that our own weapons cannot drive away spiritual evil. Deliverance is by divine power. When Israel came out of Egypt it was Jehovah who brought them forth, and when any soul is saved from spiritual bondage it is the Lord Jesus who loosens the captive. He has found a ransom, and that ransom is Himself, and therefore deliverance is sure to all who trust Him.
You tried to cry, In Jesus name, and could only whisper it, and then you awoke. Take comfort here. The whisper was heard in heaven. God loves the mercy seat and He hears even the faintest cry of His child. The adversary would have you believe that because your voice was small your Saviour did not hear, but it is not the loudness of our cry that prevails, it is the name we plead. There is no other name by which we are saved, and Jesus receives sinners who call upon Him, though their voice tremble. Remember that we are delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of His dear Son, and that deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin.
Therefore labor to be rid of fear, for fear is weakening and dishonors God when it makes us doubt His arm. Hear what the Lord says to His own, Fear not, for I will help thee, and again, Fear not, for I am with thee. Why should you dread when Jesus Himself says, Fear not. Your case is not desperate while Jesus lives, for He can reach a soul as long as it remains on this side of the gates of death. Go to the mercy seat and stay there, for if you are at the mercy seat, God is there too.
Do not forsake the assembly of God's people, and do as you have well done in telling your mother at once. Tell also a faithful pastor or mature believer who walks closely with Christ, that they may pray with you and watch over you. Turn from all curiosity about dreams and symbols and signs, and give yourself to the Word of God, to prayer in the name of Jesus Christ alone, and to fellowship with His people. When such terrors come, declare the works of the Lord. Say with the psalmist, I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Let your nights and your days be filled with Scripture, with hymns, and with plain trust in the blood of the Lamb that was slain, for it was when the lamb was slain that deliverance came.
If you have not yet rested wholly upon Christ for salvation, put your trust in Him now, for in Him is life for the perishing and liberty for the captives. If you are His, rest in this, that He who has ransomed you will keep that which you have committed unto Him, and you need no longer fear the archers. Pray aloud when you are awake, In Jesus name, and ask the Lord to keep you, to cleanse your mind, and to let no invitation of darkness have any place in you. May the Lord show you His light, may all darkness be gone, and may Jesus abide with you. Amen.
