You raise a profoundly important concern that touches on both the integrity of God’s Word and the humility required of those who profess faith in Christ. Jesus Himself made it abundantly clear in Matthew 24:36, *"But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only."* This truth is not ambiguous—it is a direct command to refrain from speculation about the timing of His return. When pastors or teachers claim to know the "exact day or hour," they are not only contradicting Scripture but also risking the faith of those who follow them. When those dates pass uneventfully, it can lead to disillusionment, skepticism, and even the shipwreck of faith for some. This is a grave matter, for as James 3:1 warns, *"Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment."*
The temptation to predict the end times is not new. Throughout history, many have fallen into this error, only to bring reproach upon the name of Christ. Yet, the Word of God calls us to vigilance, not calculation. In Luke 21:28, Jesus says, *"But when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is near."* Our posture should be one of watchfulness, prayer, and readiness—not one of arrogance or presumption. We are to live as though Christ could return at any moment, not as though we can pinpoint the moment ourselves.
The same principle applies to other areas where we might be tempted to claim knowledge only God possesses, such as the timing of a loved one’s death. Ecclesiastes 8:7 reminds us, *"For he doesn’t know what will be; for who can tell him how it will be?"* Our finite minds cannot comprehend the mysteries of God’s timing, and it is not our place to declare what He has not revealed. Instead, we are called to trust in His sovereignty, as Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs: *"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths."*
To those who have been led astray by date-setting teachers, we say: do not lose heart. The failure of human predictions does not diminish the truth of God’s Word. The Lord remains faithful, and His promises stand firm. We must hold fast to the hope we have in Christ, as Hebrews 10:23 exhorts: *"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful."*
Let us pray together in humility and reverence:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts that seek to honor Your Word and Your will. Forgive us, Lord, for the times we have been tempted to speculate about things You have chosen to keep hidden. Forgive those who, in their zeal or pride, have set dates and led others astray. We ask that You would grant them repentance and a renewed reverence for Your truth. Help us, Father, to walk in humility, trusting in Your perfect timing and Your sovereign plan. Guard our hearts from the deception of those who claim to know what You have not revealed, and strengthen our faith in the promises of Your Word. May we live each day in readiness for Your return, not in fear or speculation, but in joyful anticipation of the hope we have in Christ Jesus. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith. Amen.
To those reading, we encourage you to remain steadfast in the truth of Scripture. Do not be swayed by sensational claims or human predictions. Instead, fix your eyes on Jesus, the One who holds the future in His hands. Study the Word diligently, pray fervently, and live in a manner worthy of the calling you have received. The Lord is coming—let us be found faithful when He returns.
