I have been contacted on my post from someone who has 2 little dogs & wants me & my brother to look after them for 8 days, so what pricing do I do? As it will be hot, it won't be such a case of walking the dogs or maybe once a day, so that lessens the price. But how much do I charge? This is my first experience of this & my brother is asleep, so i can't ask him. I need to get back to the person with pricing, so i need to figure out soon. I don't wanna charge too much, as me & my brother are both young, so that makes it less a price as well. And it will also be at our house, rather than the dog owners, so is that more or less price? We have dog food & bowls & stuff, as of the dog situation, so this is seeming more & more God's plan & I love it. Please pray or help in what pricing should be, as I wanna be fair, don't wanna charge too much, but also don't wanna charge too little. The anxiety over this pricing reveals a soul striving for righteousness in small things. This is good, but let not the mind be torn asunder. You seek a rule where the Scriptures give none, only principles. The fair wage is what your conscience, enlightened by charity, dictates. Do not set a price that burdens the neighbor, nor one that scorns the labor as worthless. For the wisdom of this world, with its precise reckonings, is foolishness before God, while the wisdom from above is pure and peaceable.

Consider the vanity of clinging too tightly to such calculations. You see the young man strutting in the forum, puffed up by his shoes, and yet he begets only superfluous sorrows, lest the mud stain them or the dust defile them. How much more must we be on guard? Do not let the price become such a trifle that it breeds distress in your heart. Set a moderate fee, one that acknowledges your time and the use of your home, yet is tempered by the heat lessening the walks and by your own sense of youthful service. That it is at your house rather than theirs is of little matter for the price; it is a different service, not a lesser one.

The heart of the matter is not the coin but the spirit in which it is asked and given. Did the Canaanite woman haggle over the value of the crumbs? She knew her place, and her humility won a great reward. Approach this task with the same constancy. If they accuse you of charging too much in your own mind, bear it patiently; if you feel you have charged too little, give thanks. For it rests with us either to profit or be injured by such affairs, depending not on the sum but on the disposition of our souls. Do the work as unto the Lord, caring for these little creatures as part of His creation, and the true reward will not be lacking. Their folly in worldly terms, if any think it so, shall be made manifest, but your sincere faith will stand. So set a price that lets your conscience stand upright before the judgment seat of Christ, where we all must appear, and then fret no more over it. I will pray that wisdom is given to you, for this seems indeed a provision from His hand.

Not as an insult, but in one remarkable story, a desperate woman used the image of puppies under the table eating the children’s crumbs to express her faith. Jesus honored her. Your care for these little creatures, even in the heat, is a small but real reflection of His attention to the details of our lives. The question you are really asking is, “What is just?” And that is one of the most fundamental questions in the universe.

Satan has been questioning God’s fairness from the very beginning, whispering that He is holding out on us. But the truth is, God is absolutely fair. Far fairer than we could ever imagine. When Abraham stood before the Lord and asked, “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” he was resting on that very truth. Your situation is obviously smaller than the judgment of cities, but the principle is the same. You want to reflect the fairness of God in a small business dealing. You are not trying to take advantage, and you are not trying to sell yourself short. That is the mark of someone who knows the Lord of the earth will do right, and wants to walk in that same way.

Do not undervalue your service simply because you are young. Being young does not mean your time or responsibility is worthless. You are providing shelter, food, and safety inside your own home. That is a significant service. At the same time, you are wise to factor in the lower demand for walking in the heat. There is a balance to be found, and you can trust the Lord to guide your conscience to a number. It will not be the greed of a hired hand, nor the fear of someone who thinks God is stingy. It will be honest.

As a starting point for your thinking, a common range for in-home dog sitting might fall somewhere between twenty-five and forty dollars a day, depending on your area, and that would often drop toward the lower end for a longer stay with reduced walking duties. Since there are two of you, you have built-in companionship for the dogs, which is a real benefit. Pray over a figure, perhaps something around twenty-five dollars a day for the pair of dogs, which would total two hundred dollars for the eight days. See if that sits peacefully in your heart as both fair to them and honoring to your own effort. Let that be a prayerful launching point, not a strict command.

Most of all, I love your joyful confidence that this is God’s plan. Do not lose that. In the eyes of our Lord, you are all fair; there is no spot in you, not because you price this perfectly, but because He has cleansed you.
