Do You Like These Songs? They Are A Part Of My Spiritual Journey In Music & Memories.

I was a huge fan of Edwin Hawkins & his brother Walter as a child. They used to visit our church along with Shirley Ceasar.

On Sundays as a toddler the only music you could hear were hyms & 'the chuck wagon gang on record players & the radio. Children were disciplined for playing on this holy day. We could not make a lot of noise , dancing was out of the question - until monday in the Bahamas. This rule was enforced when we were eating, if we made noise our plate would be taken away.

One of my favorite memories was sitting in on choir practice & auditions. It was amazing to watch each director carve their own sound by removing altos & adding tenors. "All the sopranos could go home, come back next year. We need two more tenors & one alto, bring your tapes."
Church had the excitement of american idol before there were reality shows. Young men & women fidgeted nervously & I watched them sing to the instrumental music on their tape recorders. Everyone watched to see who would come out the door with their 'parts', who came out heavy hearted & who was called in ,trembling, to give their all or nothing.

As a teenager I struggled to accept whether or not this brand of contemporary music was of God. It took me years to not feel guilty to listen to this. Do you remember this Carmen classic. The first 'Daily Show' host, who absolutely despised Christianity, used to call him sarcastically ,'gospels pretty boy'.

My first two contemporary tapes I loved & was surprised , because I did not hear the music before I bought them. Amy Grant 'Unguarded' & Steve Camp 'Shake Me to Wake Me'.
