Dismissive disrespectful parent who ignores message and breaks her promise

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I made a phone call to a parent who didn’t sign up for the parent teacher conference she said she will sign up but she still hasn’t and she signed the opt out form for students reading test so I called to make sure she meant it and she said she thought signing the form meant taking the test, so I asked her to respond to my message to leave a paper trail of her confirming, she never did, and also some other parents are straight up dismissive and rude, please pray for this in Jesus name I pray amen

Treatment of Parents
A foolish child breaks a parent’s heart so honor them with gratitude and obedience.
The Burning Books
Destroy harmful influences in your life and commit to purity in what you read and see.
A Promise for Us and for Our Children
God’s promise to refresh and bless His people extends to their children, offering hope and renewal to all who trust Him.
We hear your frustration and we lift this burden with you before the Lord, for we know how discouraging it can be to diligently serve as a teacher and to be met with dismissal, broken promises, and disrespect.

We commend you for your faithfulness and diligence in reaching out to this parent, seeking clarity about the conference and about the reading test, and for your wisdom in asking for a written confirmation to leave a paper trail. That is both prudent and responsible, doing your work as unto the Lord. As it is written, Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men Colossians 3:23. Your labor is not in vain even when others do not respond as they should.

We understand how hurtful it is when a parent says she will sign up and then does not, when confusion over the opt out form leads to extra work for you, and when your follow up message is ignored after you clearly asked for a reply. And to have other parents be outright dismissive and rude adds to that weight. We encourage you not to grow weary or take this as a reflection of your worth or your calling. Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we do not give up Galatians 6:9.

In these moments, God calls us to respond with grace and wisdom rather than returning harshness. A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger Proverbs 15:1. And, If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men Romans 12:18. This does not mean you accept disrespect or fail to maintain boundaries and proper documentation, but that you continue to act with professionalism, kindness, and firmness, entrusting the outcome to God. Continue to document your communications, follow up once more in writing with a gracious reminder, and if needed, loop in administration for support so you are not carrying this alone. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach and it will be given to him James 1:5.

We also remember the Lord calls us to love and pray even for those who are difficult toward us. But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you Matthew 5:44. Praying for these parents does not excuse rudeness, but it frees your heart from bitterness and invites God to work in their hearts as well.

We thank you for praying in the name of Jesus, for it is through His name we have access to the Father and there is no other name by which we are saved.

We pray together with you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You and lift up this dedicated teacher to You. Lord, You see every phone call made, every message sent, and every effort given out of love for the students. We ask You to grant peace that surpasses understanding to guard this heart and mind in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. Give wisdom for how to follow up with this parent who has not yet signed up for the conference and has not confirmed her wishes regarding the reading test, and provide a clear resolution and proper documentation. Soften the hearts of parents who have been dismissive and rude, help them to see the value of partnership with teachers, and teach them to respond with respect and responsibility. Strengthen and encourage this teacher not to be discouraged, but to be renewed in knowing that their work is seen and valued by You. Help to respond with gentleness, firmness, and grace, and to rest in Your justice and care. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.

We hear how wearying this has been for you, doing the right thing by following up, trying to keep a clear paper trail, and then being met with silence and rudeness. It makes sense you would feel dismissed and frustrated when you are working so hard to care for your students.

Part of what makes this so hard is that you can only steward your side of the communication. A boundary helps us remember what is ours to own and what belongs to someone else. Your part is to be clear, kind, and consistent. Their response, or lack of one, is theirs to own, even when it feels personal.

A couple of small practices that have helped other teachers in this spot:

Keep a simple log for yourself with date, time, and a one-line summary of each call or message. Then send one brief, factual follow-up message that restates what was said on the phone and what you need, for example confirming the choice about the reading test, and note you will go by that unless you hear otherwise by a certain date. If your school has a policy, copy your principal or office contact so you are not carrying the paper trail alone.

We are thankful for your faithfulness to these families even when it is not returned in kind.

We pray for you now. Father, we lift up this teacher to You and ask for wisdom and steadiness in each conversation, protection from discouragement, and peace when others are dismissive. Give rest after long days and remind us that our work done faithfully before You matters. Guide these parents and students as well, and help communication to be clearer in the days ahead. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your trial has been laid before the Lord and it is not a light thing to bear, though the world might call it small. To labour faithfully for children, to seek the good of those entrusted to you, and then to meet with disregard, with promises not kept and messages left unanswered, is a weariness to the spirit. The rudeness of some and the indifference of others can wound a tender conscience that desires to do all things well and with a clear record before men.

Be comforted that you have a Saviour who can sympathize with you, for He Himself was despised and rejected, and many would not hear His word. He knows what it is to be ignored and to have His gracious invitations set aside, and He must sympathize with you because He still bears a heart of compassion for His people. He sees your diligence in seeking to keep a faithful paper trail and to do your duty with honesty, and He will not overlook such care, though others may count it as nothing.

Remember also that all the grace you need for this hour is freely given. Divine grace is not stinted nor sold, but poured out bountifully as the sun sows the earth with light. The same grace that pardons sin will also nerve your hand to do the next duty, to speak a gentle word again, to keep patience when patience is tried. Grace reigns even here, to make you gentle when you are tempted to be vexed, and to keep you from sin while you stand among those who do not value your labour. From sin's pit to Heaven's gate the whole road is paved with grace, and no step of your daily calling is left without it.

Let us pray together.

O Father of all mercy, look upon Your servant who seeks to walk uprightly in a difficult place. Grant fresh supplies of Your free grace, that weariness may not become bitterness, and that a spirit of meekness may rule where there has been provocation. Give wisdom to speak and to act with truth and love, and to commit the outcome to Your hands. Soften the hearts of parents who are dismissive or hard, and awaken in them a care for what is good for their children. Let Your peace guard the heart of this teacher, and let communion with Christ in prayer and in the Word be sweeter than any approval of men. Keep Your servant by Your power through faith, and make this trial to work patience and holiness, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Father in heaven, I thank You for this teacher who labors faithfully for children and families. Grant patience and consolation, and help to bear this dismissal and rudeness without bitterness or murmuring. Guard the heart from discouragement and give grace to respond with meekness, humility, and love. Work in the hearts of these parents, soften what is hard, and prompt them to communicate clearly and honor their word. Give wisdom for every message, every call, and every record that must be kept, and let this work be done for Your glory. Sustain hope through Your Word, and let Your peace rule in this school and in every home it serves. I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.
