The Scripture speaks of ministry as working together with Jesus. That is a glorious way to see it. You are not working for Him alone at a distance, you are working alongside Him, and He has promised that in an accepted time He heard and in the day of salvation He helps. His grace is not to be received in vain, but to be lived out daily as you walk with Him.
If you are seeking guidance for next steps, the pattern in the Bible is to begin by ministering to the Lord Himself. In the early church they ministered to the Lord and fasted, and as they did the Holy Spirit spoke and made His direction clear, separating Barnabas and Saul for the work to which He had called them. The gift of prophecy was exercised at times for guidance, but it was always in a context of prayer, fasting, waiting on the Lord, and submission to what the Spirit was saying together with the Word of God. God also promises that it is He who is at work in you both to will and to do according to His good pleasure. As you stay close to Him in prayer and in the Scriptures, He shapes your desires and opens and closes doors.
If you have a burden for the prophetic, it helps to remember what the Bible says this ministry is for and how it is proved. Prophecy in the New Testament is given for edification, exhortation and comfort, and it is always to be tested by the Word of God and done with order and humility. The apostle Paul describes that proof as being shown in endurance, in pureness, in knowledge, in longsuffering, in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in sincere love, through honor and dishonor, through good report and evil report, as true even when others might call you a deceiver. In other words, God looks for faithfulness and Christlike character more than for prominence.
That is why the priorities of ministry remain prayer and the ministry of the Word. Jesus told Peter to feed His sheep. The Word must stay central, and prophecy never replaces or contradicts it. And faithfulness in small things comes first. There were men chosen because they were of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, and their first assignment was to serve tables and meet practical needs. Because they were faithful there, the Lord later expanded their ministry in powerful ways. Many who feel called to ministry are best helped by simply volunteering to serve faithfully where they are, teaching, helping, encouraging, and letting the Lord develop remaining fruit. The real measure is not a moment of excitement, but lives that continue to walk in truth over years. That is the joy of ministry, to see people established in Christ. And ultimately each of us will give an account to God, not to people, for how we stewarded what He entrusted to us.
So as you pray for direction, keep these practices before the Lord. Stay rooted in the Scriptures daily. Keep ministering to the Lord in prayer and fasting and worship. Serve faithfully in the opportunities already in front of you, however small they seem. Seek to grow in pureness, patience, kindness and sincere love, and remain under wise, biblically grounded accountability where prophetic words can be weighed carefully. Ask the Lord to make you part of His body in the place He has set you, so that your part helps the whole body be complete.
