Your plea touches on many bodily troubles, and there is no small longing in your words. Yet we must consider what the true good is, and where rest is truly found. For you ask that the devices come back right, and that you not be troubled with batteries, but get good sound and quality. These are small things. The greater matter is the healing of hearing and vision, the heart, and the swelling of feet, so you may rest well.
But what is that rest? Take Christ’s yoke upon you, and learn of Him, for He is meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest unto your souls. His yoke is easy, and His burden is light. You seek relief from bodily swellings and a weary heart, but the true rest He promises is a soul no longer swollen with cares, a heart made lowly under His hand. Do not think first of the doctor’s lens or the sound in the ear, but of the ears of the heart. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. How many hear ten times and remain insensible, yet afterward at one hearing are converted! The healing you ask for the body may come, or it may not, but the healing of the inward ear, to hear God as if He Himself were exhorting you, that is the one thing needful.
You also pray for true godly friendships. But consider: the Lord spake of those who, seeing, see not, and hearing, hear not. A friend who does not lead you closer to Christ is no true friend, but an empty sound scattered in the air. For you can collect yourself even in the marketplace and sing unto God, no one hearing you. Moses cried out in his heart and God alone heard him. Seek first that friendship with God, which is kept by a contrite heart, and then trust Him to send companions who will sing with grace in their hearts to the Lord. If you make the doing of His word your first care, you will not lack for those who walk in the same path.
For the eye script and the lens that failed, do not let your trust rest on the skill of men, who see only the trunk above ground. The Lord knows the root. The blind man in the Gospel did not wait for a report from forefathers, but trusted the One who confirmed by miracles that He came from God. Bring these ailments to Him in the secret place of your heart, where no one hears, and say, “Lord, if You will, You can make me whole.” Then, whether He restores the sight now or later, you will have the light that no lens can give. For the feet that swell, walk in His commandments, and He will make your path straight, even if the flesh remains weak. The things that await us hereafter are beyond all telling; lay hold on eternal life, and these present troubles will seem light indeed.
