We join with you in this beautiful and honest meditation on Jeremiah 14:9 and we are encouraged by how you have drawn out the heart of this passage.

We love that you highlighted the crisis, the honest cry, and the assurance. Judah was indeed in a devastating drought and Jeremiah did not hide his confusion and sorrow from the Lord. He asked why God seemed like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior powerless to save. That honest question shows us that we can bring our raw feelings and our wondering to God, for He already knows our hearts and invites us to pour them out before Him.

Yet the truth Jeremiah clung to is the same truth we cling to today. You, Yahweh, are in the middle of us, and we are called by your name. Don't leave us. Jeremiah 14:9. Even when God feels distant, He is not distant at all. He is in our midst. He is not powerless to save, for He is mighty to save. Isaiah 63:1 says He is mighty to save, and Psalm 46:1 reminds us that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

You rightly said that Jesus is the Word of God, the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life, and we affirm this with you. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1. And the Word became flesh and lived among us. John 1:14. Because we belong to His name, because we are called by His name through faith in Jesus Christ, we have the assurance that He will never forsake us. He Himself has said, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you. Hebrews 13:5. And we remember the promise, Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid or scared, for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6.

When crises surround us, when water seems gone and crops fail in our own lives, whether through loss, illness, financial hardship, or spiritual dryness, we can be tempted to doubt His presence. But we thank God that our feelings do not change His faithfulness. Isaiah 41:10 tells us, Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

We pray together with you now.

Father, in times of trouble and uncertainty it is easy for us to wonder where You are, and we confess that we sometimes feel You are silent or far off. Forgive our wrongs and our wandering ways, and cleanse us through the blood of Your Son Jesus. We thank You that You are in our midst and that we are called by Your name. Do not leave us or forsake us, Lord. Be our strength when we are weak, our rescuer when we cannot save ourselves, and our hope when our hearts are troubled. Help us to trust not in what we feel but in what You have promised, that You are with us always. Feed us with the Bread of Heaven, Your living Word, and draw us closer to Jesus each day. That tension is so human. In hard, dry seasons when answers feel slow and prayers feel thin, many of us wonder where God is even while we cling to what we know is true about Him. Naming that confusion out loud, as you did, is itself a kind of faithfulness. It keeps the relationship honest and open.

We have also seen how much it helps not to carry that kind of season alone. When everything feels stretched, simply staying close to a few trusted people who know you, who will sit with you, pray with you, and remind you of what remains true, can be steadying. Growth in these times is rarely a straight line. It often loops back over familiar ground, and that can feel like going backwards when you are actually going deeper and learning to trust Him in a new way.

If it helps, keep praying that honest prayer together, out loud, even briefly each day, and share it with a pastor or small group you trust so they can stand with you in it.

Your prayer lays hold upon a precious truth which Jeremiah uttered when Judah lay parched under drought, when the cisterns were empty and the heavens seemed as brass. The prophet did not hide his perplexity, but cried, Why are you like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior powerless to save? And yet in the same breath he clung to what he knew to be true, You are among us, LORD, and we bear your name, do not forsake us.

This is the honest cry of many of God's people in all ages. To feel forsaken is not to be forsaken. As I have often had to tell the saints, very many have said with Zion, Jehovah has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me. A child feeling the rod may foolishly say, my father has forgotten me, when his father is at that moment dealing most faithfully with him. You are not satisfied to even think that God has forsaken you, and that very dissatisfaction is a sign that your heart still calls Him yours. Zion calls Jehovah hers though she dreams that He has forsaken her. It is good to keep the grip of faith even when it seems illogical to do so.

Remember that the history of Israel in the drought is in some sense the history of the Church still. God's people are often tried and troubled, vexed again and again, and yet not destroyed. Israel persecuted, but not forsaken, is the sum of many a Psalm and many a life. He that keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps, and though He may for a season hide His face, He has not removed His presence.

And here is our sure comfort, that there was One who did in very deed taste what it is to be forsaken. Our Lord Jesus cried, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me. His faith did not falter, for He said twice, My God, my God, yet He was forsaken of the Father that we might never be forsaken. It was essential that He as our Victim should know the full eclipse of the Father's face, that we who deserve the deepest hell might hear Him say, I will never leave you nor forsake you. As to my sin, I hear its harsh accusations no more when I hear Jesus cry, Why have you forsaken me. He was forsaken for us, and therefore we shall not be forsaken.

So I would have you take the Lord's own answer to every fearful heart. Behold, I have graven you upon the palms of my hands. Your name is not only borne by you, but you are borne upon His hands, and He cannot forget you. Do not doubt His Word without cause, nor His promise without reason. Has He ever failed you when you trusted Him. Has He ever lied to one soul that cast itself upon Christ.

May the Lord in mercy forgive your wandering ways, as you have asked, and wash you again in the blood of Jesus Christ His dear Son, which cleanses from all sin. For there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved, and no other ground of hope but Christ alone. May He make His presence more sensibly felt among you, strengthen your weak faith, and keep you as those that bear His name until He brings you through every drought into the land where you shall thirst no more.
