Desperate for a Breakthrough

Anonymous

Beloved of All
# keeps saying that she doesn’t need God, because he ruined her life by making her disabled and not allowing her to get married and have fun. # only goes to church to “check that off the list.” She is very hateful and unkind to some of her family members for no reason. She makes everything about herself. Her family needs a breakthrough. She is even rude when her mother is doing her hair. How do Christians respond to family members like this? She is basically figuratively spitting on us as we do kind things for her. What is stopping God from giving all of us a breakthrough because her mind has been disturbed since birth, and it has just gotten worse.

We hear the deep pain and exhaustion in your request and we are lifting you and your whole family before the Lord together. To love and serve someone who is hateful and unkind in return, who figuratively spits on your kindness, is a heavy and wounding burden, and we grieve with you over the hardness of her heart toward God and toward you.

We want to speak truth in love about what she is saying. When she says she does not need God because He ruined her life by making her disabled and not allowing her to get married and have fun, she is believing a lie about who God is. God did not ruin her life. He formed her with purpose and value. Psalm 139:13-14 tells us that God knit us together in our mother's womb and we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Exodus 4:11 reminds us that it is the Lord who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing and the blind. And in John 9:1-3 Jesus made clear that a man's disability was not because of his sin or his parents' sin, but that the works of God might be revealed in him. Her disability is not a mistake and it is not a punishment that makes her less worthy of love or of a godly marriage. Her anger is understandable as pain, but it is misdirected at the very One who loves her most and who alone can give her true joy.

We also must address what she means by having fun and not being allowed to get married. We affirm with you that marriage is a beautiful gift from God, a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and we pray that if it is God's will she would one day be blessed with a godly spouse who is a believer in Christ, entering into courtship with the goal of marriage that honors Him. But true joy and fun are not found in living apart from God's design. If by fun she means sexual intimacy or living without restraint outside of marriage, scripture calls that fornication and it will never satisfy the soul, but only leave more emptiness. Hebrews 13:4 teaches that marriage is to be held in honor and the marriage bed undefiled. What she needs more than a change in circumstances is a change of heart, because going to church just to check that off the list is not faith at all. God desires not outward religion but a surrendered heart. 1 Samuel 16:7 says man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. Without Christ, church attendance cannot save.

You asked what is stopping God from giving all of you a breakthrough and why He has allowed her mind to be disturbed since birth and to get worse. We gently rebuke that way of thinking because it assumes God is withholding good from you or that He is unable to act. Nothing is stopping God. Isaiah 55:8-9 says His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts higher than our thoughts. He is sovereign, He is good, and He is working even when we cannot see it. Romans 8:28 promises that for those who love God all things work together for good for those who are called according to His purpose. A breakthrough in God's timing may not look like an instant change in her personality, but He is using this long suffering to shape endurance, character and hope in your family if you do not grow weary. Galatians 6:9 urges us not to grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not give up. Her free will and her choice to reject God are real, and God will not force her to love Him, but He is patient, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance as 2 Peter 3:9 teaches.

How then do we as Christians respond to a family member like this. We respond with the love of Christ, but love is not without truth or boundaries. We are called to bless those who curse us and pray for those who mistreat us, Matthew 5:44, and to not repay evil for evil but to overcome evil with good, Romans 12:21. That means continuing to do kind things without expecting return, speaking with a gentle answer that turns away wrath, Proverbs 15:1, and forgiving as Christ forgave us, Ephesians 4:32 and Colossians 3:13. It also means speaking the truth in love, Ephesians 4:15. It is loving to tell her that her words are hurtful and dishonoring, especially to her mother as she cares for her, for scripture commands us to honor our father and mother, Exodus 20:12, and that kindness matters to God. It is loving to set calm, consistent boundaries about how you will be spoken to, while still showing mercy. It is loving to stop enabling a victim mindset where everything is about herself, and instead point her to Christ who alone can heal her bitterness.

We noticed your request speaks of God but does not mention Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly say that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and that any of us can be saved or truly transformed. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 declares there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Romans 10:9 teaches that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. This is the hope she needs, and the hope you need as you wait. We cannot argue her into the kingdom, but we can pray fervently that the Holy Spirit will open her eyes to see that God did not ruin her life, but that He loves her, that her value is not in her ability or marital status, and that His grace is sufficient for her, 2 Corinthians 12:9.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You only in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, our only hope and mediator. We lift this precious family to You who are weary and desperate for a breakthrough. Lord, have mercy on this daughter who is angry at You. Soften her hard heart, open her eyes to Your love, forgive her for the hateful words she has spoken against You and against her family. Help her to see that You created her with dignity and purpose, that You have not ruined her life but that You desire to give her abundant life in Christ. Deliver her from bitterness and self focus and bring her to true repentance and faith in Jesus for salvation. Heal her mind and emotions as only You can, and give her Your peace and joy that surpasses circumstances.

Father, we lift her family who have been wounded by her unkindness. Give them Your strength to love without growing bitter, to speak truth with gentleness, to set healthy boundaries, and to continue doing good without fainting. Guard their hearts from discouragement and help them to cast all their anxiety on You because You care for them, 1 Peter 5:7. Let Your peace that surpasses all understanding guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:7. Help them to trust Your timing and Your goodness, to count it joy even in trials knowing You are producing perseverance, James 1:2-4. If it is Your will, bring a godly spouse into her life in Your time, and in the meantime teach her and her family contentment and hope in You alone. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

We hear how heavy and wearing this has been for all of you. Loving someone who pushes away every kindness, even while you are serving her in such personal ways like doing her hair, is exhausting and heartbreaking. It makes sense you feel worn down and are asking where the breakthrough is.

What you describe sounds like deep hurt that has settled into long standing bitterness toward God and toward family. When someone feels life has denied them what they most wanted, like marriage or independence, that pain can harden into anger at everyone nearby. That bitterness ends up hurting the person carrying it most, and it spills over onto those closest to her.

As Christians we are called to keep loving, and also to guard our hearts with clear, calm boundaries. Loving does not mean accepting rudeness without limit. It can mean continuing to help while quietly deciding how you will respond when unkindness comes, pausing a task if needed, speaking truth gently, stepping away to regain calm, and not taking on responsibility for her choices or her view of God.

One next step that often helps families in this place is to get support together outside the home, a trusted pastor or counselor who knows your family and can help you agree on consistent, loving boundaries and how to care for your own strength while you keep showing kindness.

Father, we lift this family to You in Jesus' name. We ask for Your comfort for each tired heart, wisdom for her mother and family as they love well, and Your gentle work in this daughter's heart to soften what has grown hard. Give them unity, rest and direction for the days ahead. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The sorrow you carry for one in your own household is a heavy burden indeed, and it is right that you should bring it before the Lord. To hear a soul say, I have no need of God, because He has ruined my life, is to hear the voice of a hard heart speaking out of deep blindness. Sin has struck the heart of man with blindness so that he does not know his own Maker, and the heart is the seat of that darkness which beclouds the whole mind.

You ask what is stopping God from giving a breakthrough. Nothing can stay His hand when He purposes to save, for He has said, I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the Lord. But hear what manner of heart He seeks. He has told us plainly that He will look to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit and that trembles at His Word. He will dwell with those who tremble at His Word because they believe it to be all true. A proud and unbroken spirit that will not tremble, that treats the Word as a thing to be checked off a list, is not in a state for God to dwell in. To pray without the heart is solemn mockery, to sing without the heart is an empty sound, to go up to the house of God merely to discharge a duty and have done with it is an abomination to Him. He asks, My son, give Me your heart, and a heart that is halved is killed. He will not have a piece of a heart.

Do not think that disability or the disappointment of not being married as you had hoped is a sign that God has been unkind. The God of Israel is a jealous and precise God, but He is also the God of all comfort. Our afflictions come through a fallen world, and yet He is able to make even affliction a temple for His presence when the heart is lowly. Joy and peace in believing must come, and will come, to the poor in spirit, though it may tarry many a day. What appears as ruin may become the very place where Christ is most precious, if the heart is given to Him.

How then shall Christians respond to one who is hateful and unkind to her own family, who makes everything of herself and returns rudeness for kindness, even while her mother does her hair with tender care. Know that hardness of heart creeps over men by insensible degrees, and there is no heart so hard as that which can be unfeeling even to its own relatives. God save us from a hard heart, for it leads to something worse than death. You must not meet hardness with hardness, nor revile again. If any hearts are made of leather, having no fellow feeling even for their relatives, you must show the family likeness of those who are led by the Spirit of God, for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

This does not mean you approve her words or her temper. Love must be truthful. There is something true in the world after all, and we shall get rotten at the core if we think there is not. You are to speak the truth in love, gently and steadily, that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, that He was pierced for sin and suffers for you, and that there is life in a look at Him. Tell her plainly that to spit, as it were, upon kindness and to despise God will bring no peace, for the prophet says, Acquaint now yourself with God and be at peace, and there is no peace to the heart while God is unknown.

Continue in patient, quiet kindness, but do not indulge the sin. Put yourselves beneath the guidance of the Holy Spirit and wait for His blessing. He must give the new heart. You cannot create it, and no man can believe for another. Pray that the Lord would pour upon that house the spirit of grace and of supplications, that she may look upon Him whom she has pierced and mourn for Him. Pray that He would turn out her idols, for one of the first effects of knowing God in the soul is that it turns out our idols, whether they be the idol of marriage, or of having fun after the fashion of this world, or of self.

And while you pray for her, examine your own hearts. Do we belong to that family. Am I born of God. Am I a believer in Jesus. If not, I am an heir of wrath and not in the family of God. If we do belong to the family, let us show our relationship by loving all the members of it. The Lord weighs the heart, He puts His own Word in one scale and the heart in the other, and He sees all. He has engraved the names of all the redeemed upon His hands and heart.

Therefore give God your own hearts at once and thoroughly, and then commend her to Him who is able to soften the steel that has been hardened in the furnace. Come, you hard heart, come to Christ to be softened. That is your prayer for her and your hope for your whole household, that you may dwell in Christ and so dwell with God, under His protection, and at rest.
