DESCRIBED; NOT PRESCRIBED

Described; not prescribed, were the words of a sermon I heard recently. I thought to myself: “That’s absolutely correct;” just because something is written in the bible, doesn’t mean it is a prescription for us to perform in our lives. In fact, having exclaimed: “Just because ‘It is written,’ does not necessarily mean ‘it is approved;’” I have paraphrased that very same sentiment, for quite some time now; especially when the intent is hateful or destructive. Yet, there is a word in my translation, which is left out of the sermonic version: “necessarily.” That little word, necessarily, makes room for the component which completes the equation: COMMANDED. So then, let’s look at the equation, in its’ full context: “described; not prescribed, unless COMMANDED.” For what man knows the mind of God, that he may counsel Him, to tell him whom He should call, and for what purpose He should call them? No man.

Amen? . . . Amen

Commentary: In my personal walk with God, I have found that much of what I have done, within the context of “assignment,” was neither planned, nor performed of my own will and strength. In fact, most of the time, I wasn’t even sure what was happening to me, let alone, through me, until God’s timing, wherein He revealed His purpose behind my actions. But, that is what happens when we, in saying yes, yield completely to the will of God. This, I have come to understand, He does, that we cannot say “my idol hath done it:” (idols can be - intellect; strength; money; power; fame; connections . . . etc.)

“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.”

Im not sure if I interpreted your comments. "described and not prescribed" appropriately. In my deep understanding, the word of God guides us in our journey of life. In my understanding it enhances us to make Devine influenced decisions in our daily life; to respond proactively not reactively. It allows us to do introspection to determine if our response is reasonable. God influences us to follow Him. It is up to an individual to to follow Jesus. I suppose that's where the ..." Not prescribed..." fits in. Thanks for opening
