We join with you in lifting up your son before the throne of grace and we hear the burden of your heart for him to be set free from depression and darkness and to find forgiveness in his heart toward you regarding the divorce.
We want to speak lovingly and truthfully about the spiritual battle here. Scripture tells us our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places Ephesians 6:12. Depression is not only an emotional struggle but often a spiritual oppression that seeks to keep a person in darkness, and the enemy will use open doors to keep that darkness in place. You mentioned Dungeons and Dragons and Magic cards and we must address this with care. These games are rooted in sorcery, divination, magic, and the glorification of darkness and power that is not from God. Scripture is very clear, There shall not be found with you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices sorcery, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a consulter with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh Deuteronomy 18:10-12. Even when presented as fantasy or entertainment, they can plant imaginations and strongholds that are exalted against the knowledge of God 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 and they invite a fascination with darkness when Jesus calls us to walk in light. We encourage you to lovingly urge your son to renounce and remove these influences from his life, as the early believers did when they brought their magic books together and burned them Acts 19:19, and to replace them with what is true, honorable, just, pure, and lovely Philippians 4:8.
We also hear your pain over the divorce and your son's need to forgive. God designed marriage to be a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and Jesus said So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate Matthew 19:6. Scripture says Yahweh hates divorce Malachi 2:16 because of the hurt it brings, yet there is grace and forgiveness at the cross for every sin and failure when we repent. Your son is called to forgive as God in Christ forgave us Ephesians 4:32, not because the hurt was small, but because Christ has forgiven us so much. Unforgiveness keeps a person in a prison of bitterness and can deepen depression. We also encourage you to continue to humbly ask your son for forgiveness and to model repentance and healing before him, trusting God to soften his heart in His timing. Honor for parents is still God's command Exodus 20:12, but that honor grows best in an atmosphere of grace and truth.
We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is the light of Jesus alone that can dispel this darkness, for He said I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life John 8:12. If your son has not yet put his trust in Jesus as Savior and Lord, that is his greatest need, to be made a new creation in Christ 2 Corinthians 5:17.
We pray together for him now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this precious son to You. We ask that You shed Your light into his heart and deliver him from depression, darkness, and every oppressive spirit that has taken hold through these games. We ask You to break every chain and stronghold, to cast out every imagination that exalts itself against Your knowledge, and to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. Lord, we ask You to reveal Yourself to him as the Light of the world, to draw him to salvation and to fill the empty places in his heart with Your peace that surpasses all understanding Philippians 4:7. We pray You would heal the wound of his parents divorce, soften his heart to forgive his mother and father as You have forgiven us, and restore what the enemy has tried to steal. Help his mother to walk in humility, prayer, and steadfast love, and give her wisdom to guide him toward Your truth. We ask that You surround him with godly fellowship, the truth of Your Word, and pastoral help where needed, and that You would give him a hunger for Your Word over fantasy. We trust Your promise that The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:17-18. We claim deliverance and hope for him in Jesus name, Amen.
We encourage you to keep praying without ceasing, to keep the Word of God before your son, to encourage him to remove those materials connected to darkness, to seek a Bible believing church where he can be discipled, and to consider godly counsel for his depression. We stand with you believing that God who is faithful will complete the work He has begun and that the effective prayer of the righteous accomplishes much James 5:16.
