We hear your struggle and the weight of discouragement pressing upon you as you seek God’s direction in your education and career. The path before you feels uncertain, and the pressure of financial need only adds to the burden. Let us first lift this before the Lord in prayer, trusting that He sees your efforts and knows your heart.
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, lifting up this dear one who is seeking Your will in their studies and work. Lord, You promise in Proverbs 3:5-6 to direct our paths when we trust in You with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding. We ask that You would make Your way clear—whether to continue in accounting or to shift to another field. Give wisdom beyond human understanding, as You’ve promised in James 1:5 to those who ask in faith. Strengthen their mind to retain what they study, and grant them favor in their job search. Provide for their needs, Father, as You are Jehovah-Jireh, the God who provides. Lift the heaviness of discouragement and replace it with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:6-7). We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to You. Amen.
The struggle with retaining material, even after long hours of study, is real, and it’s understandable that you would question whether this is the right path for you. However, before making a decision to switch degrees, let us consider a few things from Scripture. First, perseverance is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), and trials often produce endurance, which leads to maturity in Christ (James 1:2-4). Failing exams does not mean you are incapable—it may simply mean you need a different approach to learning, or that God is refining your character through this trial. Have you sought out additional resources, such as tutoring, study groups, or even prayer over your ability to comprehend and retain the material? Sometimes, the issue is not the subject itself but how we are engaging with it.
That said, if after earnest prayer and seeking godly counsel you still feel a persistent pull toward another field, it may be worth exploring. However, let us caution against making a decision based solely on job availability or financial pressure. While provision is important, our ultimate calling is to glorify God in whatever we do (Colossians 3:23-24). If you do consider switching, we would encourage you to seek fields that align with your God-given gifts and passions, as well as those that honor Him. Nursing, for example, is a noble profession rooted in serving others, which reflects Christ’s love. But even in such fields, the foundation must be Christ—your identity is not in your career but in Him (Galatians 2:20).
Regarding your job search, we are grieved to hear of the difficulty you’re facing. One hundred applications with little response is disheartening, but we serve a God who opens doors no one can shut (Revelation 3:8). Have you considered broadening your search to include entry-level positions or internships that could provide experience and lead to other opportunities? Sometimes, God uses seemingly small steps to lead us to greater things. We also encourage you to pray specifically for favor with employers and for God to reveal any areas where your resume or approach might need adjustment. And remember, even if a job is not in your desired field, it can still be a means of provision while you continue to seek His will.
One thing we must address, dear one, is the foundation of your prayers. You closed your request with "Amen," but we did not see the name of Jesus mentioned. This is not a small matter. Jesus Himself said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). It is only through His name that we have access to the Father (Ephesians 2:18), and there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). If you have not already, we urge you to place your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Confess your sins, repent, and believe in His death and resurrection for your salvation. Without this, our prayers cannot reach the throne of grace. If you have already done this, then we rejoice with you! But if not, we implore you to seek Him today, for He is the only way to true peace and eternal life.
Lastly, we want to gently rebuke any spirit of fear or doubt that may be creeping into your heart. The enemy would love for you to believe that you are stuck, that your efforts are in vain, or that God has abandoned you. But Scripture tells us that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Stand firm in the truth that God is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28), even when the path is unclear. Keep pressing into Him, seeking His face, and trusting that He will guide your steps.
We encourage you to seek godly counsel from those who know you well—mentors, pastors, or mature believers who can pray with you and offer wisdom. Proverbs 15:22 reminds us that plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed. Surround yourself with people who will speak truth into your life and encourage you in your walk with Christ.
Continue to seek the Lord diligently, dear one. He is faithful, and His timing is perfect. Whether He calls you to persevere in accounting or to step into a new field, trust that He will equip you for the path ahead. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2), and remember that your worth is not found in your degree or your job, but in being a child of the Most High God.
