Good and Faithful Servant
My ### has been burning a lot of food lately. There are many reasons this is happening. The big problem is that he's doing this when my ### and I are not home and at church (he won't go to church with us). My ### had set his plate up for dinner in the fridge while we went to church tonight so all he would have to do was microwave it but he still used the stove while we were gone and when we came home, there was a burnt smell in the house. We're worried something bad might happen while we're gone and he does this. Please pray about all this. Thank you.

We hear your concern and we join with you in bringing this before the Lord, for we understand how worrying it is to come home to the smell of burnt food and to fear what could have happened while you were away. We lift up your father and your family to the One who watches over us all.

We are thankful for the care shown in setting a plate aside so he would only need to use the microwave, that is a loving and honoring act. Scripture calls us to honor our father and mother, as in Exodus 20:12 and Ephesians 6:2, and part of that honor in this season may mean watching over his wellbeing with wisdom and gentleness. When a loved one begins to burn food often, especially when it is a new pattern, it can be a sign of forgetfulness, distraction, or changes in health that deserve attention. We encourage you with love to speak with him calmly about what happened, not in accusation but in concern for his safety, and to consider practical steps together as a family. This may include checking smoke detectors, using timers or an automatic shut off device for the stove, encouraging microwave use, and perhaps having a family member or trusted friend stay with him when you go to church, or seeking a medical evaluation to ensure there is not an underlying health need. God gives wisdom to those who ask, for Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust in Yahweh with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding, and James 1:5 reminds us that if any of us lacks wisdom we should ask God who gives generously.

We also notice your father chooses not to go to church with you, and we want to pray for his heart. We gather together because we love the Lord and want to hear His Word, but we know that going to church alone does not save us. We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to share gently that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and the gift of salvation. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 tells us there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. To be saved we believe in our heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, as Romans 10:9 teaches. We pray that your father would come to know this hope, and that your faithful example and loving invitation would draw him. Continue to invite him with kindness, pray for him, and live Christ before him without nagging or quarreling, trusting the Lord to work in His timing.

We also see your worry, and the Lord understands. Philippians 4:6-7 calls us not to be anxious in anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving to let our requests be made known to God, and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard our hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus. And 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us that God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self control. We can bring our fears to Him and ask for His protection and peace.

We pray together now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, and we thank You that we can approach Your throne through Him. We lift up this dear father to You, we ask You to protect him from harm and from fire or danger in his home, to keep him safe when he is alone. Give his family wisdom, discernment, and gentle words to talk with him about the stove and to make his home safer. Guide them to the right help, whether medical insight or practical support, and give them unity and patience as they honor him in this season. Lord, we ask that You soften his heart toward You, that he would hunger for Your Word and desire fellowship with Your people, and above all that he would know Jesus as Savior and Lord. Draw him by Your love and by the witness of his family. Fill this home with Your peace that passes understanding, calm their worries, and help them to trust You while they take wise steps to care for one another. We ask all this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to keep praying, keep loving your father well, and keep seeking wise counsel from your pastor and perhaps his doctor. The Lord sees your care for your family and He is faithful to guide you. Psalm 91:1-2 reminds us that he who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty, we will say of Yahweh, He is our refuge and our fortress, our God, in whom we trust. May you rest in that refuge as you walk through this with Him.

We hear the worry in your note, coming home to that burnt smell and wanting your dad to be safe and treated with dignity in his own home. It makes sense you feel torn between wanting to be at church and wanting to be sure nothing happens while you are gone.

It was thoughtful of your mom to have a plate ready in the fridge so he could just use the microwave. When the stove is still being used, it helps to think through safety together at a calm time, not right after it has happened.

One practical next step is to check the simple safeguards and talk with him gently when things are quiet about a plan for while you are out. Make sure smoke detectors are working, and look into options like stove knob covers or an automatic shut-off device that many families find helpful. Since burning food more often can sometimes signal changes worth checking, we would encourage you to help your dad get a checkup with his doctor, and offer to go with him if he is open to it. If there is a trusted neighbor, relative, or friend from church who could drop by for a few minutes while you are at service, that extra presence can also ease your minds.

We are praying with you and for your mom and dad.

Father, we lift this family to You. Protect this dad and give them wisdom for keeping the home safe. Give them gentle words with each other, favor with his doctor, and peace as they look for the next right steps. Guide them and keep them close to You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your request has been heard and taken to heart, and we understand the weight of this care that has come upon your household. To come home to the smell of burnt food and to feel fear for what might happen while you are away is a trial that touches both love and daily duty.

We will pray for you in this matter, and we would have you remember that anxiety of itself has never brought comfort nor any meal to the barrel, and indeed the very anxiety which arises through being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. Our Savior would have us not be in a state of fretfulness and distress about temporal things, but to be prudent. Prudence is needful here, for love must act wisely as well as tenderly.

There is a safety which lies only in our God, who is able to keep us from falling and to keep us in all perils. You need an infinite Friend to keep you in safety against all adversities, and beneath the broad wings of Jehovah His people shall be secure. Yet the Lord who is wise to keep us also gives wisdom to parents and to households to keep those entrusted to them from harm, and He treats us not as stones without will, but as those who must act with care. Let your prayer for safety be joined to wise and loving action. Speak gently with him about the danger, seek counsel as to whether some infirmity of memory or health may be at work and let him be seen if that is wise, and consider what practical helps may keep the house safe while you are at worship, such as removing need for the stove when you are absent, using only the prepared plate for the microwave, and if need be devices which prevent the stove being left unattended.

We are also burdened for his soul, since you tell us he will not go with you to the house of God. Our great anxiety for those yet unconverted is that they should know the Lord at once, for that alone prepares for the world to come. We will pray that the Lord will open his heart to hear the gospel and to come under its sound, and that He will work in him both to will and to do of His good pleasure.

Let us pray together. O Lord our Savior, Thou only wise God who art able to keep us from falling, we commend this household to Thy care. Keep this dear one from harm and keep this home in safety. Give to this family wisdom beyond their own, calmness without fretfulness, and words seasoned with grace to speak the truth in love. And we pray above all that Thou wouldst draw the heart that now stays away from Thy worship, that he may yet seek Thee and find mercy in Christ Jesus. Present us all faultless before the presence of Thy glory with exceeding joy, and keep us beneath Thy wings till that day. In the name of Jesus our hope we ask it. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing this concern with us. We understand how heavy and worrying this must feel for you and your family, especially when you want to honor your loved one while also keeping your home safe.

We are praying for you, for the family member who prepared the meal, and for your loved one who is burning food. We are asking God to protect your home from harm, to give you wisdom in how to handle this situation with love and clarity, and to bring peace where there is anxiety.

We pray that God would give you grace and patience as you navigate this, and that He would help your loved one to be receptive to your care and concern. We also pray for his heart toward the Lord and toward gathering with you for worship, that God would draw him gently and that your faithful example would be a light to him.

Because this has happened more than once and involves the stove being left unattended, we encourage you to take practical steps for safety alongside prayer. It may be wise to speak with him calmly and kindly about what happened, to make sure smoke detectors are working and that you have a fire extinguisher accessible, and to consider ways to make the stove safer when you are away, such as using stove knob covers or an automatic shut off device, and continuing to provide meals that do not require the stove. Since a change like this can sometimes be related to health or memory concerns, it may also be helpful to encourage a checkup with his doctor to make sure he is well, and to seek counsel from a trusted pastor or family advisor about how best to care for him if he needs more supervision at home.

May the Lord give you wisdom, unity as a family, and protection over your household. We will continue to pray for safety in your home, for health and clarity for your loved one, and for encouragement for you as you care for him in love.

If you are able, let us know how he is doing, so we can continue to pray with you.

Please pray about this: my dad is back in bed laying down after waking up already this morning and doing his morning routine. He rarely does anything like this. I checked on him and he says he's okay. Please pray he is. Please also pray for him to get a new primary care doctor soon. Thank you.
