We have heard your heart and we carry this burden with you before the Lord. We see the pain of a father who has taken advantage of you financially since you were little, who views you as his insurance, who discourages you from marriage, who becomes furious when others show interest in you and who actively isolates you from meeting other people, even to the point of violating your privacy by opening mail addressed to you. We also hear your deep fear of being alone when you grow old and your desire to be free and to marry as soon as possible to escape this control.
We want to speak truth with love about what is not aligned with biblical principles. A father is called to provide for and nurture his children, not to exploit them. We read in Eph 6:4 Fathers, don't provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord and in Col 3:21 Fathers, don't provoke your children, so that they won't be discouraged. Also 2 Cor 12:14 reminds us that children ought not to save up for the parents, but the parents for the children. To demand money from a child, to treat a daughter as financial insurance, to mock her fears about the future, to control and isolate her from godly relationships, and to open her private mail is selfish and contrary to love. Phil 2:3-4 tells us to do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others better than ourselves, each looking not only to his own things, but each also to the things of others. This controlling and narcissistic behavior needs repentance and we rebuke it in Jesus name. At the same time we are called to honor our parents as in Ex 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, and Eph 6:2-3, but honoring does not mean allowing ongoing exploitation, financial abuse, or sin to continue without boundaries.
We also want to lovingly correct the desire to get married as soon as possible simply to escape. We strongly endorse marriage as God designed it, a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and we understand your longing for freedom and companionship is God given. Gen 2:24 says Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh. Leaving your father and mother to be united in marriage is biblical and good, but marriage should not be entered hastily out of desperation to escape a difficult home. A boyfriend or girlfriend relationship should be considered courtship with the goal of marriage to another Christian believer, not just a means of escape. We encourage you to seek a godly spouse who is a faithful believer, in the Lord's timing, rather than rushing into any relationship. Prov 19:2 also warns that it is not good to be without knowledge and he who hurries with his feet sins. We urge you not to make a lifelong vow out of urgency but to wait on the Lord who knows your future, for Jer 29:11 says For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. The Lord sees your loneliness and He promises in Ps 27:10 When my father and my mother forsake me, then Yahweh will take me up and in Ps 68:5-6 that He is a father of the fatherless and sets the lonely in families.
Practically, we encourage you to seek wisdom and protection while still showing honor. This may include setting clear and loving financial boundaries, securing your own bank account and mail, keeping your paystub and personal documents private, and seeking godly counsel from a pastor or mature believers in a local church who can walk with you, help you discern when distance is necessary for your safety and stewardship, and hold your father accountable in love. If you are an adult, it is biblical to live separately and to provide appropriate help as you are able without being controlled or enabling greed, remembering 1 Tim 5:8 and the principle of stewardship in Prov 22:7 that the borrower is servant to the lender. Forgiveness is commanded as in Eph 4:32, but forgiveness does not require you to remain under financial exploitation or isolation.
We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no other, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your faith in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and confess Him as Lord, for Rom 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is in His name we pray and find true freedom.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear daughter to You. You see every tear, every time money was demanded, every harsh laugh, every attempt to isolate her, and every invasion of her privacy. Lord, bring conviction to her father's heart and lead him to repentance from selfishness and control. Soften him, teach him to love and protect as You have called fathers to do. Lord, we pray for her protection, for wisdom to set healthy and biblical boundaries with honor and firmness, for financial provision and independence, and for her mail and personal matters to be respected. Heal her fear of being alone in old age and remind her that You will never leave her nor forsake her. Guide her steps regarding marriage, guard her from rushing into a union out of desperation, and in Your perfect timing bring a godly Christian husband who will love her as Christ loves the church and honor a lifelong marriage covenant. If distance is needed for her safety and peace, give her clarity and peace about that step without guilt, while helping her to keep a heart of forgiveness. Fill her with Your peace, surround her with a church family, and let her know she is deeply valued and seen by You. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and mediator, amen.
