Creative miracles, healing, repair...

Thank you for sharing this need so openly and for your desire to bring these pains before the Lord. I hear how much discomfort you have been carrying in your left knee, your left elbow, and in your gums and teeth on the right side, and how you long for the pain, inflammation and irritation in those areas to be gone.

I want you to know that God does care about your physical body. When Jesus walked on earth he showed power over the physical realm as he healed sickness and infirmity. Matthew connects that ministry to what Isaiah foretold, that the Messiah would bear our infirmities and sicknesses, and he presents those healings as part of what Jesus came to carry for us. In the same way, when Jesus broke bread he spoke of his body given for us, and we are reminded that his suffering touches both our spiritual need and our physical need. Healing in any form is from the Lord, whether it comes in a moment or through the slower, natural processes he has built into our bodies. All true healing is divine because God is the one who created our bodies and the ways they recover.

At the same time Scripture helps us keep a balanced hope. That well known verse about wishing that someone would prosper and be in good health is not a blanket promise that everyone will be healed exactly as we ask, but a loving prayer from John for his friend Gaius. There is a real connection between the health of our inner life and our bodies, as the proverb says a joyful heart is good like medicine, and our thoughts and peace can affect our physical wellbeing, yet the Bible does not teach that we can demand healing by speaking a formula or that God must heal in every case as we direct. Even the apostle Paul prayed three times about his own thorn in the flesh and the Lord answered with grace and strength rather than removal. Not everyone is given the same gifts and not every healing comes in the same way. Jesus sometimes healed with a word, sometimes with a touch, and once gradually, and he often told those he healed to quietly give thanks rather than to make a display. There is much about healing we do not fully understand, and we trust his wisdom and sovereignty.

For that reason I would gently encourage you not to try to command creative miracles or to call upon angels as if they respond to our orders. Angels are servants of God who do his will, and our prayers are to be directed to the Father through Jesus Christ, asking for his mercy according to his will. He hears the simple, trusting prayer and he answers according to what is best.

So let us pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus I bring this dear one before you. You see the pain in the left knee and the left elbow, and the pain and irritation in the gums and teeth on the right side. You know what is inflamed and what is in need of care. I ask for your mercy and healing touch upon these areas. If there is anything that needs to be removed, I ask that you in your wisdom would remove it. If there is anything that needs to be repaired, I ask that you would repair it. Bring relief from pain and inflammation, bring restoration and wholeness as you will. Give wisdom to any doctors or dentists who may help, and give peace to the heart and mind while waiting on you. Above all, cause the inner life to prosper in Christ, to know your forgiveness, your presence and your comfort, and let that hope bring strength to the body as well. We trust you with the outcome, knowing that you love us and that you have power to heal today, and that even as we groan in these present bodies we look forward to the full and lasting wholeness you have promised in Christ. Amen.

Keep seeking the Lord daily, resting in his care for both soul and body, and continue to bring your needs to him with trust. He hears you, he loves you, and he will do what is right and good.
