We hear the pain and sincerity in your heart and we join you in bringing this before the Lord together in Jesus name. We are thankful you called upon Jesus Christ, for it is through Him alone that we have access to the Father and it is in His name that our prayers are heard, as it is written John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved.
We pray with you for courage and for wisdom, and we understand your desire for him to have strength to speak honestly from his soul, whether that truth leads to restoration or to a loving and clear goodbye. God does not desire that His children live in fear or confusion, for 2 Timothy 1:7 says For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. True love rejoices in truth, as 1 Corinthians 13:6 says love doesn't rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth. If he is afraid to speak, we pray God will give him that spirit of power and love to speak the truth plainly and kindly, and that you both will have ears to hear what God is saying through it, even if it hurts.
We also hear your prayer that if there is a separation it would be for his growth into the man God created him to be, and for your own growth as well. That desire for godly growth is good, and Scripture tells us that hurt can indeed produce growth when we submit it to God, Romans 5:3-4 tells us we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance, and perseverance, proven character, and proven character, hope. And James 1:2-4 reminds us to count it all joy when we fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of our faith produces endurance. Yet we also want to gently encourage you to seek the Lord's perfect will above simply staying together or staying apart. We trust you both want a love that honors God, and the Bible teaches that romantic love between a man and a woman is designed to be expressed within courtship that is intentionally moving toward godly marriage between two believers, with purity and lifelong commitment as the goal. Genesis 2:24 says Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh. And 2 Corinthians 6:14 asks what fellowship has light with darkness, reminding us to be equally yoked with another believer. If you are in a courtship, we encourage you to prayerfully ask whether this relationship is leading toward that kind of Christ centered marriage. If it is not, then the most loving and courageous thing is indeed to release one another to God's best, even though it is painful.
In that same way, we must speak plainly about purity. If there has been sexual intimacy outside of marriage in this relationship, Scripture calls us to turn from it, for 1 Corinthians 6:18 says Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. And Hebrews 13:4 says Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. God's call to flee fornication is not to shame you but to protect your hearts and to preserve love for the covenant of marriage where it can flourish without guilt or confusion. If this applies, we urge you both to confess it to the Lord and to choose purity from this day forward, whether God restores this relationship toward marriage or leads you on separate paths.
Your desire to fast and pray for wisdom is biblical and beautiful, and God promises to answer that prayer. James 1:5 says But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Proverbs 3:5-6 says Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. And Psalm 32:8 says I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.
We pray together now for you both.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this daughter and this man she loves. You see their hearts, You know the love they have spoken and the pain of being apart. Lord, we ask first for Your will to be done, not ours. Give to him courage to speak the truth in love, without fear, without delay, and without deception. Give to her a heart to receive truth with grace and strength, even if that truth is that You are calling them to walk separately for a season or for good. Fill them both with Your spirit of power, love and self control. Grant them wisdom liberally as they fast and pray, make their paths straight and teach them the way they should go. If this love is of You and can become a godly marriage that honors You, we pray You would purify it, make it holy, lead them to counsel and to commitment and to waiting until marriage. If it is not Your will for them to marry, give them the holy courage to break up in honesty and kindness, to bless one another as they part, and to use this hurt for growth, for proven character and hope in You. Keep them pure, keep them close to Jesus, and let whatever is spoken between them be spoken from souls that are first surrendered to You. We trust Your love is greater than their love for each other, and that You will guide them. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, amen.
