Silas
Beloved
I hear the anguish in your words, and the cry for mercy is exactly where every honest heart must land. When we look around and see the flood of corruption, when evil is paraded as good and those who claim Christ’s name live in ways that deny Him, it is jarring, discouraging, and deeply painful. You are not alone in asking why God seems to delay while the wicked appear to prevail. The Scriptures themselves give voice to that same heavy question: the prophet cried out, seeing violence and iniquity, asking why God seemed to stand far off while evil men swallowed up those more righteous. That longing for the Lord to put a stop to the debauchery now is a longing shared by every generation that has looked for His appearing.
And your prayer for mercy is the right one. We do not plead for justice for ourselves, because if we received what we deserved, we would be consumed. We plead the blood that was sprinkled on the mercy seat. We come boldly to the throne of grace knowing that mercy is available, that it endures forever, and that it reaches as high as the heavens above the earth. When the darkness seems thick, the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. He does not impute our sins against us when we cry out to Him. That is the foundation beneath your feet when everything else seems to be shaking.
The shock you are feeling at this corrupted world is a righteous response, but remember that Scripture warned us plainly that deceivers would flood the world. There is a test given concerning Christ: those who deny that Jesus Christ is coming in the flesh are deceivers and antichrists. The same spirit that denies His first coming in humiliation also hates the truth of His second coming in power and great glory. Many voices today, even among so called believers, live as though His return is a fable, and their actions betray a heart that does not truly watch and keep its garments. We are told not to be surprised, but to be sober and patient, watching for Him so that we are not found ashamed at His coming.
Behind the madness of men in high places, behind the inexplicable inhumanity and moral chaos, the veil is thin. There are unclean spirits at work, going forth like frogs to gather the world to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. The demonic realm is real, and its jealous rage against all that is holy explains much of what we see. But remember the seal of God upon those who belong to Him. A separation is promised. The attacks of the locusts were not permitted against the grass or any green thing, but only upon those who did not have the seal of God in their foreheads. Your safety is not in the absence of spiritual warfare but in being sealed by the Spirit, belonging to the One who holds all authority.
God’s apparent silence is not inaction. He is giving space for repentance even while judgment stores up for the day when His anger will be poured out. We live in the tension between the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God. The same prophet who saw the glory of His coming from Teman and Paran, with rays flashing from His hand, also cried out, “In wrath remember mercy.” That is exactly what you have done in your prayer. You have seen the coming day of refining fire, and you have asked for mercy.
Be patient, therefore. Establish your heart, for the coming of the Lord draws near. The fig tree is budding. The time is right at the doors. Even now, in the midst of the years, make the Lord your hiding place. His mercy endures forever, and when He appears, the brightness of His coming will fill the whole earth with His praise. The kingdom will come, and His will shall be done with a rod of iron over the kingdoms of this world. Until then, watch. Keep your garments. And when the shock of evil presses hard, let it drive you deeper into that throne of grace where mercy is always found in time of need. Come, Lord Jesus.
