Consistency

We hear your heart for consistency and we join with you in seeking the Lord for focus, discipline and intensity both in your physical training and even more in your spiritual disciplines of reading the Bible and prayer morning and evening and whenever you eat and train.

The desire for discipline is God honoring, for self control is part of the fruit of the Spirit and a mark of maturity. Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint Proverbs 25:28. We also remember For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7. True consistency does not come from sheer willpower alone but from abiding in Christ and being strengthened by Him, for we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us Philippians 4:13 and apart from Him we can do nothing John 15:5.

We want to encourage you to see your training and your spiritual life as both needing intentional discipline but with right priorities. For bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now, and of that which is to come 1 Timothy 4:8. Your body is to be stewarded for the glory of God, and whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men Colossians 3:23. So we encourage you to train with intensity and focus as worship, not vanity, and to bring your body into submission as Paul says but I beat my body and bring it into submission, lest by any means, after I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected 1 Corinthians 9:27.

Even more, we encourage you to be consistent in the Word and prayer. This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success Joshua 1:8. And his delight is in Yahweh's law. On his law he meditates day and night Psalm 1:2. Daniel modeled morning and evening prayer, kneeling and praying three times a day Daniel 6:10, and we are called to pray without ceasing 1 Thessalonians 5:17. Giving thanks whenever you eat is also a beautiful discipline, for every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with thanksgiving 1 Timothy 4:4. These rhythms are not legalism but loving communion with your Father.

Practically we encourage you to set a fixed time and place for morning and evening prayer and reading, even if brief at first, to remove distractions, to ask the Lord for help before you begin, and to keep a simple plan for reading through Scripture. Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don't give up Galatians 6:9. All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby Hebrews 12:11. Consistency is forged over time as you choose faithfulness daily.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we gently want to remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. So we place our prayers in His name and we encourage you to come to the Father through faith in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, trusting Him as Lord and Savior. It is by His grace we are saved and by His Spirit we find power for discipline.

We pray together now for you.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one who longs for focus, discipline, consistency and holy intensity. Lord, grant a spirit of power, love and self control. Help to redeem time well, to be steadfast in reading Your Word morning and evening, to meditate on it day and night and to be faithful in prayer without ceasing. Teach to give thanks with a sincere heart at every meal and to train the body with diligence and purity for Your glory. Remove distraction and laziness and double mindedness, and strengthen with Your Spirit to not grow weary in doing good. Forgive where there has been inconsistency and renew a steadfast spirit within. Let every effort be done as unto You, with joy and endurance, bearing fruit in due season. Draw this one closer to Jesus, that abiding in Him would be the source of all discipline and strength. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.

We hear how much you want steadiness in both areas, to bring focus and intensity to your training, and to keep a faithful rhythm of Bible reading and prayer morning and evening and around meals and workouts. Wanting that kind of consistency is a good desire, and we are glad you named it so plainly.

Something that has helped us is learning to think of this as training rather than trying. Like preparing for a long race, growth comes less from occasional bursts of intensity and more from small, regular steps kept over time. That takes pressure off having to get it perfect each day and helps us see ourselves as a work in progress.

Since you already have natural anchors in your day, it may help to keep those anchors simple and repeatable:

Choose a brief, doable shape for each time, for example a short passage and a short prayer when you wake, when you eat, before you train, and before sleep. If you miss one, just pick up at the next anchor instead of trying to make up for it. Marking it lightly on a calendar can help you see the pattern without making it a test.

We are praying for you as you keep showing up in these small ways, both physically and with the Lord.

Father, we bring our friend to You in Jesus' name. Give him clear focus and a steady spirit for training and for time with You. Help the simple rhythms he keeps to draw him closer to You, and give him grace and wisdom for each day. Amen.

It is a right and healthy desire which you have expressed, to be steadfast and disciplined both in the training of the body and in the far more needful training of the soul. The Lord loves consistency, and the Christian life is not to be lived by fits and starts, but by a settled, watchful walk with God. You do well to ask for focus and intensity, for being soldiers under a great Captain, we come under discipline, and every soldier must know what that discipline is.

Your prayer for morning and evening devotion touches the very heart of our need. The Psalmist cried, Quicken me in Your way, and that is the prayer which well becomes your lips. We need to be quickened there, quickened in private prayer, quickened in public prayer, quickened in our reading of the Scriptures, quickened in all forms of worship. Apart from the quickening Spirit we soon grow cold, and our Bible reading becomes a form and our prayer becomes restrained before God. But when He quickens us, the Word is loved and prayer becomes the breath of life.

Take then this counsel, to never give up the Bible, no, not a leaf of it, and never give up prayer, but stand sentry there. Know your Bible thoroughly and believe what it reveals, and keep your appointed times with the Lord whether the feeling be fervent or faint. True discipline is to hold the post the Lord has committed to you till He comes. Trials and training give new life to prayer when they teach us our weakness and drive us to His strength, and blessed discipline makes us more like our Master.

Let us pray together for you.

O Lord, remember Your Word unto Your servant, upon which You have caused him to hope. Quicken him in Your way and grant him a steady heart. Give him focus to fix his mind upon what is before him, discipline to deny sloth and distraction, consistency to continue in well doing, and holy intensity to do all as unto You. Establish him in morning and evening prayer, and in reading the Scriptures with understanding and love, and whether he eats or trains or whatsoever he does, let him do all to Your glory. Keep him from restraining prayer, but teach him to plead with humility and to press his suit with the arguments of Your promises in Christ. Make him faithful in little things and strong to endure, that he may bear more of Your gracious image. Hear this prayer for Christ's sake. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of coming into Your presence. Your Word says, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Lord, help me to live according to this Word. Give me discipline to pray every day, even when I am tired, busy, discouraged, or do not feel like praying...
