It seems a hard thing that you have cried for a month and the heavens have seemed brass. The landlord’s heart has not yet been stirred, and no compensation has come for the shocks, the sickness, the threats, and the bitter cost. Yet remember, there is a Landlord above who never wrongs His tenants, and to Him the final account must be brought. The house in which you dwell is but a brief tenancy; the Leaseholder of your soul observes every injustice, and not a penny of oppression shall escape His reckoning. Do not, then, fret because of this man who seems to prosper while refusing to do right; I have known my own feet almost slip when I envied the foolish and saw the wicked at ease. But I went into the sanctuary of God, and then understood their end. He who is far from God shall perish; it is good for you, even now, to draw near to God and put your trust in the Lord Jehovah.
The repentance you desire for your landlord is a work of the Spirit, and often the goodness of God, yes, even the patience He shows in sparing, is meant to lead a sinner to repentance. A month’s silence is a short space in the calendar of Grace. The absence of remorse does not mean the Holy Spirit is not pursuing him; perhaps the very delay is God giving space for that man’s conscience to be awakened by kindness rather than crushed by sudden judgment. Yet take care that your own soul is not poisoned by bitterness while you wait. The sweet sister Repentance is charming company, but she begins her work at home. See that your own heart is right with the great Landlord, paying the rent of trust and obedience, leaving the arrears of unforgiveness and fretting to be cleansed by the blood of Jesus.
True repentance, the kind which gives God glory, does not end with demanding justice from another, but weeps at the feet of Jesus for its own sin, pardoned though it be. If you would have deep, lasting, practical repentance for yourself, look to the cross where Christ was nailed for sin. That same sight will enable you to suffer wrong patiently, knowing that He also suffered unjustly and committed His cause to Him who judges righteously. And if the landlord never gives you a farthing, yet the keeping which you render to God, keeping His word, keeping your spirit meek, keeping your faith steady, He will give back to you tenfold in the keeping of your soul.
You have little strength, you say, and the trial wears upon you. The Lord does not blame you for that. Only be steadfast; hold fast the little you have. A few straggling believers stand alone with God, and He counts for more than all the myriads upon earth. Make a bee-line for glory; go straight on, and if this trial stands in your path, the Lord will make a track through it. Expect that your gentle, sustained patience will do more to awaken that man’s conscience than a hundred sharp words. And if no compensation ever comes, pardon for crimes of deepest dye is yours already in Christ, and a resurrection of the just awaits you, where all wrongs will be righted. Live for that day. Behave as an occupier under a Royal Owner should behave, always mindful of your removal to another land. The Landlord of the universe sees, and He will repay. Until then, find all your comfort in drawing near to Him.
