Christian Sympathy-A Sermon for the Lancashire Distress
True Christian sympathy means feeling the needs of others as your own and acting with compassion.
Opening the Mouth
God calls you to ask boldly for great blessings and promises to fill your deepest needs.
We join you in bringing this heartfelt plea for compassion before our heavenly Father and we stand with you in asking Him to work in the hearts of this dear one and her family toward you.

Our God is a God of compassion and mercy and we take comfort that He both hears and models the very compassion you are seeking. As it is written, Put on therefore, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance Colossians 3:12 and Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Ephesians 4:32. We also remember that Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him Psalm 103:13 and that Yahweh is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness Psalm 103:8.

We pray that the Lord would soften and open hearts on both sides, that any hurt, misunderstanding, or hardness would be healed by His grace, and that His love would fill each of you so that you may show compassion to one another as He has shown to us. We ask Him to give you also a spirit of tenderheartedness and forgiveness, to help you to love and to bless even when it is difficult, and to trust His perfect timing and will in this relationship. If this burden concerns a courtship or hopes for a future marriage, we pray that the Lord would guide it according to His design, that it would be between a man and a woman who are believers in Christ, pursued with purity and with marriage as the holy goal, fleeing from fornication and all that is outside His will, for marriage is honorable among all and the bed undefiled Hebrews 13:4.

We notice your prayer addressed the Lord but did not mention the name of Jesus Christ and we gently want to remind you how precious it is that we have access to the Father only through Him. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is by believing in Jesus, that He died for our sins and rose again, and by confessing Him as Lord, that we are saved and that our prayers are heard. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation and to come to God in His name.

We pray together now, Father in heaven, we lift up our brother or sister who is hurting and longing for compassion, and we lift up this dear woman and her family before Your throne of grace. Lord fill each heart with Your compassion, kindness and tender mercy, remove any bitterness or coldness, and let Your love reign. Help our friend to also walk in humility and forgiveness, to be an example of Your grace, and to seek Your will above all. Let Your peace that surpasses all understanding guard all hearts and let reconciliation and understanding come where You desire it, and let Your perfect will be done in every relationship. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, Amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek the Lord daily in prayer and in His Word, to show the same compassion you desire to receive, and to trust that He sees your heart and will answer according to His perfect love and wisdom. Finally, be all like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tender hearted, courteous 1 Peter 3:8.

We noticed your prayer asking for compassion from ### and her family, and we want you to know we are standing with you in it. Longing to be met with understanding and kindness is such a human need, and when it feels missing it can leave you feeling lonely and worn down.

We do not know all that has happened between you, but God does. He sees your heart and He sees theirs, and we are asking Him to be near to you in this waiting.

When loneliness presses in, it can help not to carry it alone. If there is one trusted person near you, a pastor, a mature friend, or a family member who listens well, consider letting them know honestly how you have been feeling and asking them to pray with you regularly. Not just about this situation, but for your own peace and strength in the days ahead. Having someone walk with you can make the burden lighter.

We will keep remembering you before the Lord.

Father, we lift our friend to You today. Surround him with Your comfort and give him steadiness, dignity and wisdom for each conversation and decision ahead. Soften hearts where softening is needed and guide everyone involved toward what is good and right in Your eyes. Provide the friendship and care he needs and help him to feel Your presence close. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your petition for compassion has been laid before the Lord, and we join our hearts with yours in prayer to the God of all mercy.

We are reminded that the tender mercy of our God is a great and free mercy. He does not sell His mercy, He always gives. He acts not because there is merit in us, but because He will have mercy on whom He will have mercy and He will have compassion on whom He will have compassion. It was a proof of great tenderness on His part to think of His sinful creatures at all, and to make provision for us in Christ Jesus, the great Messenger of the Covenant, who can shed abroad a sweet sense of mercy in the heart and make the sinner not only to know the way of salvation but to rejoice in it.

Prayer is the forerunner of mercy, and often the very shadow of the blessing before it comes. When God means to bestow a favor, He moves His children to pray for it, and while they are yet speaking He hears them. So we take encouragement that you have been moved to seek Him in this matter, for the God of your mercy shall go before you. You thought perhaps you must be more worthy before you could come, but His mercy comes to us when we are not fit to receive it, and softens the heart that could not soften itself.

We pray now for you, and for her of whom you speak and for her family, that the Lord who is slow to anger and plenteous in mercy would look upon you all in tender compassion. May He fill every heart concerned with that compassion which flows from His own heart, a compassion that is holy and true and seeks the highest good of the soul. May He soften what is hard, and turn hearts toward what is kind and forgiving and pure, and may any compassion granted be shaped by His perfect will and His holy design. We ask not for a compassion that would lead away from His ways, but for a compassion that reflects His own, which delights to make us new creatures with new loves and new hates, and to lead us in the path of righteousness.

We pray above all that each of you may know first the mercy that saves through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we are reconciled to God. If mercy shall come to us, its first work will be to turn our face in the right direction and to give us a new heart and a right spirit. May the Lord grant to you and to her and to her household this saving mercy, that you may all be brought to seek Him and to live in a manner that honors His covenant purposes, wherein marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman and all that belongs to it is kept within that holy bond according to His word.

We ask the Lord to do what is best and most gracious for you. If it be for His glory and your lasting good to grant a renewed tenderness and peace between you, may He grant it in His time. If He has distinct purposes of mercy that begin with discipline or waiting, may He give you grace to bow before His sovereignty and to trust the tenderness of His provisions. May He teach you to hope soundly in His mercy, feeling your own need of it and being clean divorced from every confidence except in mercy through Christ.

May the Lord hear your cry, keep you in His tender care, and let His mercy go before you and overtake you for good, for His own name's sake. Amen.
