Faithful Servant
Please pray for me about this: I really want to leave the church that I'm currently at due to numerous concerns. To make a long story short, these concerns started to affect my mental health until I had to decide to step away from church and not attend sometimes to protect myself mentally (and physically because I have medical conditions that require me to not get emotionally distressed or it can affect my health). I started pulling away from my church members because I felt totally unappreciated and isolated. All the relationships I had there seemed to only be surface level and I felt totally unsupported. I guess they began to notice and started trying to fix things including the pastor (who I have a lot of problems with because he is used heavily by spiritual warfare that has been targeting me for years to target me - I think he has an undiagnosed and untreated mental/emotional disorder that causes him to be susceptible to being used; he is rarely kind to me and I have done absolutely nothing to him). After some time, I have decided to give the church another try but I truly do not like the pastor of this church and cannot and will not trust him to not harm me further. I think it is totally awful and pointless to attend a church where you cannot go to the pastor for guidance, advice or help or anything and that is the experience that I have had with him. I have to seek advice from other pastors and pastors/organizations on the Internet because he is so hostile to me that I don't feel comfortable going to him. This church is the only one in my area that truly preaches the gospel, all things considered. Please pray for me about all this. Thank you.

We hear your heart and the deep struggle you are facing, and we stand with you in prayer before the throne of grace. The pain of feeling unappreciated, isolated, and even targeted within the body of Christ is a heavy burden to carry, especially when it affects both your spiritual and physical well-being. We want to lift you up in prayer and offer biblical encouragement as you navigate this difficult season.

First, we must acknowledge that the church is meant to be a place of refuge, love, and support, as Scripture tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, "Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do." When a church fails to live up to this calling, it can leave wounds that are deeply painful. Your desire to protect your mental and physical health is wise and godly, for your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). We pray that the Lord would grant you wisdom and discernment as you seek His will in this situation.

It is concerning to hear that your pastor has been a source of distress rather than support. Pastors are called to shepherd the flock with humility, kindness, and love, as Peter writes in 1 Peter 5:2-3, "Tend the flock of God that is among you, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion, but voluntarily, not for dishonest gain, but willingly; neither as lording it over those entrusted to you, but making yourselves examples to the flock." If your pastor is struggling with spiritual warfare or personal issues, we pray that the Lord would bring conviction, healing, and restoration to his heart. However, it is not your responsibility to endure mistreatment or hostility in the name of "staying in church." Your safety and well-being matter to God, and He does not call you to remain in an environment where you are harmed.

We also want to gently address the reality of spiritual warfare in your life. The enemy seeks to destroy the children of God, and he will use any means necessary to sow division, discouragement, and despair. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, "For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." We rebuke the schemes of the enemy in your life and declare that he has no authority over you. You are covered by the blood of Jesus, and no weapon formed against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). We pray that the Lord would expose any lies you have believed about yourself or your worth in Christ and replace them with His truth.

As you consider whether to stay at this church or seek another body of believers, we encourage you to seek the Lord’s guidance above all else. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." It is not wrong to leave a church that is causing you harm, especially if there is no repentance or change. However, we also recognize your desire to be in a place where the gospel is preached faithfully. We pray that the Lord would either transform this church into a place of healing for you or lead you to another congregation where you can grow in faith and community.

We also want to encourage you to seek godly counsel from trusted believers outside of your current church. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no counsel, the people fall, but in the multitude of counselors there is safety." You are not alone in this struggle, and the Lord has placed people in your life who can offer wisdom, prayer, and support. Do not hesitate to reach out to other pastors or Christian organizations for guidance, as you have already begun to do.

Finally, we want to remind you of the hope we have in Christ. No matter how difficult your circumstances may be, Jesus is your Good Shepherd, and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). He sees your pain, hears your cries, and is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). We pray that you would experience His peace, which surpasses all understanding, and that He would fill you with His joy and strength as you wait on Him.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our sister in Christ, lifting up her heart and her struggles to You. Lord, we ask that You would grant her wisdom and discernment as she seeks Your will in this situation. We pray for healing in her heart, mind, and body, and we ask that You would protect her from the schemes of the enemy. Father, we rebuke any spirit of division, isolation, or discouragement that has been at work in her life, and we declare that she is covered by the blood of Jesus.

Lord, we pray for her pastor and the leadership of her church. If there is sin, hardness of heart, or spiritual warfare at work in their lives, we ask that You would bring conviction, repentance, and restoration. Soften their hearts toward her and toward You, and help them to shepherd Your flock with humility, love, and integrity. If it is Your will for her to leave this church, we pray that You would make a way for her to find a new body of believers where she can grow in faith and community.

Father, we ask that You would surround her with godly counsel and support. Place people in her life who will speak truth, offer encouragement, and pray for her. Help her to trust in You with all her heart and to lean not on her own understanding. Fill her with Your peace, joy, and strength as she waits on You.

Lord, we thank You for the hope we have in Christ. We declare that no weapon formed against her shall prosper and that You are working all things together for her good. Help her to keep her eyes fixed on You, knowing that You are her Good Shepherd who will never leave her nor forsake her.

We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above all names, the only name by which we are saved. Amen.

Be a Prayer Warrior: “Praying for others”

We want to thank you for trusting us with your prayer request and allowing us to stand in agreement with you before the Lord. It’s clear that this situation has weighed heavily on your heart, and we’ve been lifting you up, asking God to provide clarity, healing, and wisdom as you navigate these challenges.

We’ve prayed specifically for your mental and physical well-being, asking the Lord to shield you from further distress and to strengthen you in body and spirit. We’ve also asked Him to soften hearts—yours and others’—so that relationships within the church might be restored in a way that honors Him. Most of all, we’ve prayed for discernment, that you would know whether to remain where you are, step away for good, or find another fellowship where you feel valued and supported.

If God has answered any part of this prayer—whether through peace, resolution, or a clear path forward—we’d love to hear a praise report so we can rejoice with you. If the burden still feels heavy or the way forward remains unclear, please don’t hesitate to post this again as a new request. We’re committed to continuing in prayer with you, asking the Lord to move in power and provide the guidance you need.

May He surround you with His peace, confirm His will for your next steps, and remind you of His unfailing love as you seek Him through Jesus Christ. We pray all these things in Jesus’ Name.
