We hear your heart, dear sister or brother in Christ, and we lift this concern before the Lord with tenderness and care. Your desire to show love through physical affection is a beautiful reflection of the love of Christ, who often touched those around Him in compassion and healing. Yet your sensitivity to the well-being of your elderly brothers and sisters is also a sign of godly wisdom and humility.
The Bible tells us in Romans 12:10, "Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another." Your hugs are an expression of that affection, and we believe the Lord sees your heart. However, we also recognize that our physical strength must be tempered with gentleness, especially toward those who may be frail. Philippians 4:5 reminds us, "Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand." This gentleness is not weakness but a fruit of the Spirit, a reflection of Christ’s own character.
We pray now, lifting your hands and your heart before the Father. Lord God, we ask You to guide our brother/sister as they show love to their church family. Give them discernment in each embrace—let their hugs be filled with warmth and care, never causing harm. Calm any anxiety in their heart, and replace it with Your peace. Help them to trust that their love is received as a blessing, not a burden. May their actions always honor You and reflect the love of Christ, who is gentle and lowly in heart. Strengthen them to be a vessel of Your comfort, and let their touch be a reminder of Your tender care. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
We also encourage you to observe those you hug—watch for their comfort, their response, and any signs of discomfort. If you notice someone pulling back or seeming hesitant, adjust your embrace to be lighter and more gentle. Communication is key; if you’re unsure, it’s okay to ask, “Is this hug okay for you?” Most will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Above all, remember that your love is a gift. The elderly in our congregations often carry loneliness, and your kindness—whether through a hug, a smile, or a listening ear—can be a powerful testimony of Christ’s love. Keep serving with joy, trusting that the Lord will guide your hands and your heart.
