Christians causing me to stumble

Anonymous

Beloved of All
These so-called Christians are causing me to stumble by the music they listen to. It causes me to stumble because they don’t live like Christ.

We hear your deep concern and frustration, and we want to address this with both truth and compassion. It is painful when those who claim the name of Christ live in ways that do not reflect His holiness, especially when their choices—like the music they listen to—become a stumbling block for others. Scripture warns us about this very thing: *"But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a huge millstone were hung around his neck and that he were sunk in the depths of the sea"* (Matthew 18:6 WEB). This is a serious matter, and we must approach it with both firmness and grace.

First, let us clarify that no one is perfect—we all fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). However, there is a difference between struggling with sin and embracing it without repentance. If these individuals are truly born again, their lives should bear fruit in keeping with repentance (Matthew 3:8). Music that glorifies sin—whether through explicit lyrics, worldly messages, or associations with ungodly lifestyles—can indeed lead others astray. The apostle Paul instructs us: *"Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any excellence, and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things"* (Philippians 4:8 WEB). If the music in question does not meet this standard, it is right to be concerned.

We must also examine our own hearts. While their actions may be wrong, we are called to respond in a way that honors Christ. Jesus said, *"If your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained back your brother"* (Matthew 18:15 WEB). Have you lovingly and privately addressed your concerns with them? If not, this may be the first step. If they refuse to listen, Scripture gives further guidance (Matthew 18:16-17). However, we must always speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), not with a spirit of condemnation, but with a desire for their growth in Christ.

At the same time, we must guard our own hearts. It is easy to become bitter or judgmental when we see others living inconsistently with their faith. But we are called to *"consider how to provoke one another to love and good works"* (Hebrews 10:24 WEB), not to stumble in our own walk because of their failures. If their choices are causing you to sin—whether through temptation, anger, or discouragement—you may need to create some distance for the sake of your own spiritual health. Paul writes, *"Bad company corrupts good character"* (1 Corinthians 15:33 WEB), and this includes the influence of their music or lifestyle if it is leading you away from Christ.

Let us also remember that our ultimate trust must be in God, not in people. Even the most faithful believers will disappoint us at times, but Jesus never will. He is our perfect example, our Savior, and our strength. If you have not already, we encourage you to surrender this burden to Him, asking for wisdom and grace to respond in a way that pleases Him.

We pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our brother/sister who is struggling because of the actions of others who claim to follow You. Lord, we ask that You would give them wisdom and discernment to navigate this situation in a way that honors You. Help them to speak the truth in love, and give them the courage to address these concerns with those involved, if it is Your will. If their influence is causing them to stumble, grant them the strength to set boundaries that protect their own walk with You.

Father, we also pray for those who are causing this stumbling block. Soften their hearts, Lord, and convict them of any sin in their lives. If their music or lifestyle does not align with Your Word, reveal that to them and lead them to repentance. Help them to see the impact of their choices on others, and give them a desire to live in a way that glorifies You.

Most of all, Lord, we ask that You would be their peace and their strength. Remind them that their faith is not in people, but in You alone. Guard their heart from bitterness, anger, or discouragement, and fill them with Your love and grace. Help them to fix their eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of their faith, and to walk in a manner worthy of the calling they have received.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can come to You and the only name by which we are saved. Amen.

In closing, we encourage you to cling to Christ in this difficult situation. Surround yourself with believers who do strive to live for Him, and immerse yourself in Scripture and worship that draws you closer to God. If these individuals are unwilling to change, trust that God will deal with them in His time. Your responsibility is to walk in obedience and to pray for them, not to carry the weight of their choices. May the Lord bless you and keep you, and may He give you peace as you seek to honor Him in all things.

We hear your struggle, and we're here for you. It's tough when those claiming to be Christians don't live up to their name, especially when their choices affect others. Let's remember, we're all on a journey, and none of us are perfect. But as believers, we should strive to live in a way that reflects Jesus' love and holiness.

Music can be a powerful influence. If it's leading you astray, it's okay to take a step back. Paul tells us to think about things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable (Philippians 4:8). If the music in question doesn't meet this standard, it might be wise to reconsider it.

But let's also look at our own hearts. Have we lovingly and privately shared our concerns with them? Jesus tells us to go to our brother alone if they sin against us (Matthew 18:15). If not, this could be a first step. Always speak the truth in love, not with a spirit of condemnation, but with a desire for their growth in Christ.

At the same time, we must guard our own hearts. It's easy to become bitter or judgmental, but we're called to provoke one another to love and good works (Hebrews 10:24). If their choices are causing you to sin, you might need to create some distance for your own spiritual health.

Ultimately, our trust must be in God, not in people. Even the most faithful believers will disappoint us, but Jesus never will. Let's surrender this burden to Him, asking for wisdom and grace to respond in a way that pleases Him.

We're praying for you now:

Dear Lord, we lift up our friend who's struggling due to the actions of others claiming to follow You. Give them wisdom and discernment to navigate this situation. Help them to speak the truth in love and to address these concerns with those involved, if it's Your will. If their influence is causing them to stumble, grant them the strength to set boundaries that protect their own walk with You.

Healed Spirit Soul And Body

We want to thank you for sharing your heart with us and allowing us to stand with you in prayer during this difficult time. It is truly a privilege to lift your concerns to the Lord, especially when you feel led astray by those who claim to follow Christ yet do not reflect His love or holiness in their actions. We have prayed that the Lord would grant you discernment, strength, and peace as you navigate this challenge, asking Him to guard your heart from stumbling and to reveal His truth in every situation.

We also prayed for those who may be causing you to stumble, that the Holy Spirit would convict their hearts and draw them into a deeper, more authentic relationship with Jesus. May they grow in their understanding of what it means to live a life that honors God, not just in word, but in deed and in the choices they make—including the music they allow into their lives.

If the Lord has already worked in this situation—whether by changing your heart, giving you clarity, or even softening the hearts of those around you—we would love to hear a praise report so we can rejoice with you. If, however, you still feel burdened or uncertain, please know that we are here to continue standing with you in prayer. You may repost this request, and we will faithfully lift it up again, trusting that God hears and answers according to His perfect will and timing.

May the Lord bless you with His presence, fill you with His peace, and remind you daily of His unfailing love. Keep seeking Him with all your heart, knowing that He is faithful to complete the good work He has begun in you. We pray all these things in the powerful and precious name of Jesus. Amen.
