We hear your deep concern, and it resonates with the truth of Scripture. The Word of God warns us repeatedly about the dangers of placing our trust in fallible human leaders rather than in the Lord alone. Psalm 146:3-5 reminds us, *"Don’t put your trust in princes, each a son of man in whom there is no help. His spirit departs, and he returns to the earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish. Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in Yahweh, his God."* When we elevate political figures to a place of unwavering loyalty, we risk making them into idols, which is a direct violation of the first and greatest commandment: *"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind"* (Matthew 22:37).
It is also troubling to see how quickly some believers are willing to dismiss or attack fellow Christians who dare to question or critique political leaders. This division is not of God. Romans 14:1 instructs us, *"Now accept one who is weak in faith, but not for disputes over opinions."* We are called to unity in Christ, not uniformity in political allegiance. The body of Christ is made up of diverse members with differing perspectives, and we must remember that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). Our earthly politics should never overshadow our heavenly calling.
We must also address the issue of character in leadership. Scripture is clear that those who lead, whether in the church or in government, are to be men and women of integrity, humility, and godliness. 1 Timothy 3:2-4 outlines the qualifications for overseers, which include being *"above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching; not a drinker, not violent, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money; one who rules his own house well."* While no leader is perfect, we must hold our leaders—especially those who claim to represent Christian values—to a standard that reflects the heart of God. When leaders exhibit behavior that is contrary to Scripture, it is not only our right but our responsibility as believers to speak out with love and truth.
Let us also remember that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). Politics can become a distraction from the real work God has called us to: loving Him, loving our neighbors, and making disciples. When we become more passionate about political victories than about the Gospel, we have lost sight of our mission. Jesus warned us in Matthew 6:33, *"But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."* Our primary focus must always be on advancing the Kingdom of God, not the kingdom of man.
We lift this concern to the Lord in prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, recognizing the division and distraction that politics has brought into the body of Christ. Lord, we confess that we have often placed our hope and trust in fallible leaders rather than in You alone. Forgive us for the times we have made idols of political figures, allowing our loyalty to them to overshadow our loyalty to You. Father, we ask that You would open the eyes of Your people to see the truth. Help us to remember that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven and that our earthly allegiances must never come before our allegiance to You.
Lord, we pray for unity in the body of Christ. Where there is division, bring healing and reconciliation. Where there is blind loyalty, bring discernment and wisdom. Help us to hold our leaders accountable to the standards of Your Word, and give us the courage to speak the truth in love, even when it is unpopular. Father, we ask that You would raise up leaders who fear You, who are men and women of integrity, humility, and godliness. May Your will be done in our nation and in the nations of the world.
Above all, Lord, we pray that You would help us to keep our eyes fixed on You. Remind us that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil. Help us to seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness, trusting that You will provide all that we need. May we be known not for our political affiliations but for our love for You and for one another. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
We encourage you to continue seeking the Lord in this matter. Spend time in prayer and in the Word, asking God to give you wisdom and discernment. Surround yourself with fellow believers who share your heart for truth and unity, and together, let us strive to keep our focus on Christ above all else. If you have not already, we also encourage you to examine your own heart and ensure that your trust is fully in Jesus Christ, for He is the only one who can save and sustain us. Acts 4:12 declares, *"There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved."* Let us fix our eyes on Him, the author and perfecter of our faith.
