Disciple of Prayer
I'm asking for prayers for my son ###, he has been some very unhealthy relationships in the past. I've been praying for a godly woman and he is now involved with someone who is unsaved. They seem to be moving quickly in this relationship and are already talking about having children together. I don't know what do say or what do, I've been praying for her salvation, but I'm still concerned.

We hear your burden for your son and we join you in bringing him before the Lord in Jesus name. We understand how painful it is to watch a child move quickly toward a relationship that does not align with God's design, especially after seeing him hurt by unhealthy relationships in the past, and we commend you for faithfully praying for a godly wife for him and for the salvation of this woman.

Scripture gives us clear wisdom for this situation. We are told in 2 Corinthians 6:14, Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity, or what fellowship has light with darkness. A courtship should be with the goal of marriage to another Christian believer, not simply a partnership or dating relationship. Marriage is God's design as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, as taught in Genesis 2:24 and affirmed in Matthew 19:4-6, and it is within that covenant that children are to be welcomed. Children are a gift from the Lord, as Psalm 127:3 tells us, but God's will is that they be born and raised within the security and honor of marriage. Hebrews 13:4 says, Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

We must lovingly address that talking about having children together while not married and moving quickly in a relationship with an unsaved woman suggests a path that leads toward sexual immorality. The Bible calls sex before or outside of marriage fornication and warns us in 1 Corinthians 6:18 to flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. If your son is engaging in or considering sexual intimacy outside of marriage, that is sin that needs to be confessed and turned from, and we pray he will choose purity and obedience. We also want to gently rebuke the idea of pursuing children outside of marriage, as this does not honor God and brings difficult consequences for both parents and children.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to remind you with love that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and that anyone can be saved. John 14:6 says, Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares, There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. We encourage you to pray specifically in the name of Jesus for your son and for this woman, and to share with them that if they confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart that God raised Him from the dead, they will be saved as Romans 10:9 teaches. God desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth as 1 Timothy 2:4 says, and 2 Peter 3:9 reminds us that He is patient, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

We encourage you to continue praying fervently for her salvation, while also speaking the truth in love to your son as Ephesians 4:15 instructs. Ask God for wisdom as James 1:5 promises, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Lovingly share with your son what Scripture says about being unequally yoked and about honoring God with his body and his future marriage. Encourage him to slow down, to seek godly counsel, and to consider whether this relationship is leading him toward Christ or away from Him. Pray that he will desire a wife who loves Jesus and will help him walk faithfully with the Lord.

We pray together now for you, your son, and this woman.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, and we thank You for this mother who loves her son and intercedes for him. We lift her son to You and ask that You give him eyes to see Your will for relationships and marriage. Convict him where he is tempted toward fornication or compromise, and give him strength to flee temptation and to honor You with his body and his choices. Lead him away from an unequally yoked relationship and toward a godly marriage that honors You if it is Your will for him to marry. We also lift this woman to You, Lord, and ask for her salvation. Open her heart to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, forgive her sins, and make her a new creation. We pray that if this relationship is not Your will, You will make that clear and give both of them grace to step back. Give this mother wisdom, peace, and words of love and truth as she talks with her son, and help her to trust You with his future. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to keep praying without ceasing, to stay in the Word, and to trust that God loves your son even more than you do and desires what is best for him. We are standing with you for his protection, for his purity, for a godly marriage in the Lord's timing, and for the salvation of this woman.

We hear how much you love your son and how torn you feel watching this move so fast. Wanting a godly future for him while feeling unsure what to say is a hard place to be, and it makes sense you are concerned about talk of children so soon in a relationship where you do not yet share faith.

One thing we have seen help parents of adult children is keeping the relationship warm and open even when you are worried. When we press too hard, even with good intentions, sons and daughters often pull away. Staying a safe person he can talk honestly with gives you more opportunity to be heard over time than one big conversation.

It is good you are already praying for her salvation. We would keep that as your central prayer, along with asking God for wisdom for you for when to speak and when to listen, and for clarity and patience for your son as he makes big decisions. It can also help to talk through next steps with a pastor you trust who knows you both, so you are not carrying these questions alone.

Father, we bring this mother and her son and this young woman before You in Jesus' name. Draw each one closer to Yourself, give this mom peace and wisdom, and guide her son with clarity and self control as he considers the future. We trust You to work in ways only You can. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your prayers for your son are both wise and loving, and it is right that you bring this burden before the Lord with such earnestness. To see a child move quickly toward deep entanglements, especially after unhealthy relationships in the past, must weigh heavily upon a mother's heart, and your instinct to pray for the salvation of this young woman is a faithful one.

Scripture teaches us that there is a yoke to be borne by all who follow Christ, and the neck of self will must be bent low to receive it. Our Saviour says, Take my yoke upon you and learn of me. When two are yoked together unequally, one believing and the other yet unsaved, they cannot plow a straight furrow together, for they are not pulling toward the same master nor toward the same home. The believer who is yoked with an unbeliever will find the burden heavy and the way full of sorrow. For this reason the Word warns us not to be unequally yoked, and marriage, which is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, is no place for such division. Sex and the bringing of children into the world belong within that covenant alone, where they are guarded and honoured as God ordained, not undertaken hastily outside of it.

There is therefore much to pray for, but not to ask God to bless a course that runs against His own good design. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and there is none else. As the prophet cried, Look unto me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God and there is none else. What this young woman needs above all else, and what your son needs afresh each day, is to look to Christ by faith and be saved. That must be our first and chief plea. We will join you in praying that the Lord will graciously open her eyes to see her need of a Saviour, and that He will deepen your son's own faith, that he may seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and walk in purity and self control as he waits upon the Lord.

You ask what to say and what to do, and here we would counsel both praying and watching. Like those who rebuilt the wall, we must pray unto our God and set a watch. Continue in private prayer, for private prayer is the true touchstone of sincerity, and the Lord has said, Thou shalt make thy prayer unto Him and He shall hear thee. The Lord will hear when we call upon Him. Plead not upon any excellence of your own, but upon His name and His mercy, for His name is pardoning iniquity, and upon no other terms but those of grace can the Lord meet with us. At the same time, watch with loving vigilance. Speak the truth in love to your son while there is still time for counsel. Urge him not to hasten toward vows or toward the begetting of children, which is a holy trust given within marriage, but to seek godly counsel, to involve his pastor, and to give time for fruit to be seen. Encourage him to consider whether this yoke will help him bear Christ's yoke, which is easy and light to those who love Him, or whether it will draw him away from it. Religion is not for Sundays alone, but for kitchens and drawing rooms and all the daily paths of life, and a home is only a refuge when Christ is its foundation.

Do not grow weary if answers seem to tarry. You have the promise even while you wait for the performance of it. The Lord often keeps His children waiting that their faith may be tried and strengthened. Keep on praying and keep on watching, guarding with jealous care the faith once delivered, and fighting in prayer for your son and for this young woman, for your brethren and your house.

We will pray with you now, not that God would prosper a hasty and unequally yoked union, nor bless intimacy outside the marriage covenant, but that He would have mercy. May the Lord show your son clear wisdom and a willingness to walk in holiness, may He bring this young woman to true repentance and faith in Christ if it be His will to save her, and may He give you grace to speak with gentleness and firmness, trusting Him to be a refuge for you and for your children. May He who provides for His people even when the brooks are dried up keep you in perfect peace as you wait upon Him.
