Christ came to bear the judgment for sin, offering grace and redemption to those who trust in Him.

Bread of Heaven/Word of Life/ Jesus is the word of God

Isaiah 8:3 :
And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.

The prophet is to write on a large roll, or on a metal tablet, words which meant, Make speed to spoil, hasten to the prey: pointing out that the Assyrian army should come with speed, and make great spoil. Very soon the riches of Damascus and of Samaria, cities then secure and formidable, shall be taken away by the king of Assyria. The prophet pleads with the promised Messiah, who should appear in that land in the fulness of time, and, therefore, as God, would preserve it in the mean time. As a gentle brook is an apt emblem of a mild government, so an overflowing torrent represents a conqueror and tyrant. The invader's success was also described by a bird of prey, stretching its wings over the whole land. Those who reject Christ, will find that what they call liberty is the basest slavery. But no enemy shall pluck the believer out of Emmanuel's hand, or deprive him of his heavenly inheritance.

Isaiah 8:3 points forward to Jesus Christ in several ways. Like Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, Jesus’ life and name carry profound significance. Where Isaiah’s son represented swift judgment, Jesus embodies salvation and hope. Isaiah’s prophecies, including this one, ultimately lead to the promise of Immanuel-fulfilled in Jesus (Matthew 1:22-23). Christ came to bear the judgment for sin, offering grace and redemption to those who trust in Him.

Isaiah 8:3 is a powerful reminder that God’s word is faithful and true, that He is deeply involved in both personal and global events, and that His ultimate plan is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who brings hope to all who believe in Him.

Prayer for Matthew 1:22 :
“Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:”

Praying through Matthew 1:22: Our prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the Gospel of Matthew and the beautiful way that he links the truth of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ, with the many Old Testament prophecies that foretold of His life and ministry, His sacrificial death, and glorious Resurrection. Thank You for telling us the end from the beginning so that we might know the truth and be set free from slavery to sin, by faith in Him. Give us a greater understanding of Your Word and more insight into the plan of redemption which threads its way throughout the Old and New Testaments. Help us to grow in grace and in a knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, in Whose name we pray, AMEN

We rejoice in your reflection on the faithfulness of God’s Word and how the prophetic threads of Scripture, like Isaiah 8:3, find their fulfillment in the person of Jesus Christ, our Immanuel. Indeed, every name, every sign, and every prophecy in the Old Testament points to the hope we have in Him, the Bread of Heaven and Word of Life. It is a profound truth that God’s plan of redemption was woven into history long before we ever drew breath, and it is completed in Christ alone.

The name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, "Swift is the booty, speedy is the prey", serves as a sobering reminder of God’s judgment upon sin and rebellion. Yet in the same breath, Scripture reveals that judgment is not God’s final word. For while the Assyrian invasion brought swift destruction to the unrepentant, the greater invasion of grace came through Jesus, who bore the judgment we deserved on the cross. As Isaiah later declares, "He was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him" (Isaiah 53:5). This is the heart of the Gospel: that Christ came not to condemn the world, but to save it (John 3:17).

Your prayer through Matthew 1:22 is a beautiful acknowledgment that all Scripture testifies of Christ. We join with you in thanking the Father for His meticulous plan, where even the smallest details, like the naming of a prophet’s son, proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Yet we must also rebuke any notion that God’s Word is merely a collection of ancient stories or symbolic metaphors. It is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), and it demands a response. Have you, or those reading this, surrendered your life to the One who fulfilled these prophecies? For "there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). If you have not confessed Jesus as Lord and believed in your heart that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9), we urge you to do so today. The same grace that fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy is available to you now.

Let us also address a subtle but dangerous trend in modern Christianity: the temptation to treat Scripture as a buffet, picking and choosing which prophecies or commands to obey while ignoring others. Isaiah’s prophecy was not just about judgment, it was also a call to trust in the Lord rather than in alliances with worldly powers (Isaiah 8:12-13). Today, many who claim Christ still place their trust in political systems, cultural trends, or personal comforts rather than in the Rock of our salvation. We must ask ourselves: Are we, like the faithful remnant in Isaiah’s day, clinging to God’s Word even when the world mocks us? Or are we diluting its truth to fit the spirit of the age?

We pray now for those who are wrestling with doubt, for those who see the brokenness of the world and wonder where God is in the midst of it. Father, we ask You to open their eyes to see Jesus as the fulfillment of every promise. Where the enemy has sown confusion, uproot it with the clarity of Your Word. For those who feel the weight of judgment, whether from past sins or present struggles, remind them that Christ bore that judgment in their place. Let them hear Your voice saying, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).

For those who are seeking purpose, we declare that your life has meaning because it is part of God’s redemptive story. Just as Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz’s name carried significance, so does yours, etched in the palms of the One who died for you (Isaiah 49:16). Do not despise the small beginnings or the ordinary moments, for God uses them to display His glory. And for those who are in positions of influence, whether in families, churches, or communities, we pray that you would wield that influence not for personal gain, but to point others to the hope of Christ.

Finally, we rebuke the spirit of complacency that says, "I’ll follow Jesus later" or "I can live however I want because grace abounds." No, beloved. Grace abounds so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness (1 Peter 2:24). The same God who named Isaiah’s son is the God who knows your name, your struggles, and your deepest needs. He is not a distant deity but Immanuel, God with us. Let us live in that reality, walking in holiness, proclaiming His truth, and resting in the finished work of the cross.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Word, which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). Thank You for Jesus, the living Word, who stepped into time to redeem us from the curse of sin. We ask that You would stir in our hearts a fresh hunger for Scripture, a deeper love for Christ, and a boldness to share the hope we have with others. Where we have strayed, draw us back. Where we have grown weary, renew our strength. And where we have doubted, remind us that You are faithful to fulfill every promise. May our lives be living testimonies of the truth that "God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16). We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus, our Savior and King. Amen.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful reminder of how the Scriptures point us to Jesus. We are grateful that God’s plan of redemption is woven through every page, from Isaiah’s prophecy to Matthew’s gospel, and that we can rest in the finished work of Christ. It’s a deep encouragement to pause and simply marvel that He bore our judgment and offers us such grace.

When our hearts are full of thanksgiving like yours, we find it helpful to stay in that place a while, not rushing past it, but letting the truth of Immanuel, God with us, settle into the ordinary moments of the day. Sometimes we’ll write down one specific way the gospel rewrites our story, or we’ll share it with someone else who needs the same hope. That keeps our gratitude from becoming abstract; it becomes the fuel for how we love and serve.

We also love that you included that prayer from Matthew. It’s a good model for us: asking God to deepen our understanding of His Word and to help us grow in grace. We can join you in that.

Lord Jesus, thank You that You are the Word made flesh, the fulfillment of every promise. We praise You for bearing our sin and giving us Your righteousness. Keep our hearts fixed on You, and let our gratitude overflow into lives that honor You. Give our friend continued joy and wonder as they see You in the Scriptures. In Your strong name, Amen.

Father I thank You for this one, their country, and that it would not be swooped up like swift booty and speedy pray, but granted favor and compassion from many other countries, in Jesus' Name

O how the Word of God stands sure, from the days of Isaiah to this hour. Maher-shalal-hash-baz was a swift token of coming judgment, but his name pointed beyond Assyrian spoil to a greater Deliverer. The child born of the prophetess spoke of haste to the prey, but the Child born of the virgin speaks of grace and truth. Christ came, not to hasten to spoil, but to be spoiled Himself, bound for our transgressions, nailed to the cross for our sins, that by His bonds we might be set free. In Him the rod of iron becomes a shepherd’s crook; in Him the overwhelming torrent turns to a gentle brook of mercy for every thirsting soul.

Let your faith lay hold on this, and grow rich in it. You are in Christ as the chosen are, crucified with Him, risen with Him, perfect in Him. The text from Isaiah is no dead letter; it lives and breathes in Jesus, who is the sum of all prophecy. And what is our answer? To trust Him, simply and wholly. If you are conscious you are not in a right state to come to Christ, then come just as you are, for it is the sick who need the physician. Drop into the arms of Jesus, and let Him keep your soul. There is no other ground of hope, not your growth, not your experience, but Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Yet do not sit still as though grace were a mere possession to be admired. Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our blessed Lord. The more you know of Christ crucified, His bonds, His bloody sweat, His cry of forsakenness, the more you will love holiness and hate sin. Prove your faith this very day: win a child for Christ in the Sunday school, speak a word to a weary sinner, or open that dusty Bible and let it no longer be Christ in prison. The world binds His hands by seeking pleasure in sin; will you, by coldness of heart, do the same?

Hold up Christ before the eyes of men. Tell of His atoning sacrifice, His power to save to the uttermost. There are believers in every fold who belong to the one flock; seek their unity in truth, and do the work of an evangelist. And remember, if distresses afflict you, you are still perfect in Christ. If Satan assaults you, your life is hidden with Christ in God. The interposing grace that met Saul on the Damascus road meets you in your daily walk. Let the heavenly sun shine in; bathe your heart in the consolation that is in Christ Jesus. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You observe rightly that the Scriptures, like a golden chain, link every prophecy to its fulfillment in Christ. The son of the prophetess bore a name of swift judgment, yet even that name pointed forward to the One who would bear judgment not upon others, but in His own flesh for our sins. This is a good and profitable meditation. But let us take care that our understanding does not become a snare. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. To search out how Isaiah's words find their yes in Jesus is a noble labor, yet the Devil himself knows the Scriptures and is not saved thereby. You have spoken of grace, and this word should strike the heart with fear and gratitude. For where grace is, works are not; if it is grace, why are you high-minded? The river of living water that Christ promised flows not from a mind stuffed with allegories, but from the belly, that is, the heart, of one who believes with a humble and contrite spirit.

Do not imagine that the mere connection of Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz to Jesus secures your standing. The proud God resists, but to the humble He gives grace. When you pray for greater understanding of the plan of redemption, ask also for the lowliness of mind to receive it. The mystery hidden from ages was that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, not by their own cleverness, but by the gospel. So I entreat you: read the Scripture beforehand, as the eunuch did, and then approach with a quiet heart, waiting for the Spirit to open it. Let your prayer be not only for insight, but for such a flame of love that the knowledge you gain becomes a well of water springing up unto eternal life within you. Christ became poor that we through His poverty might become rich; let the same mind be in you, counting all else as loss in order to win Him. Then, abounding in faith and utterance and knowledge, you will truly abound in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
