Can’t get him off my mind

Suirmar

Disciple of Prayer
I have been trying to cut the soul ties between me and an old friend for a very long time and I have cut him off from my life but somehow I still can’t get him off my mind. I cut all soul ties between me and him and renounce any thought of him that enters my mind. I will never think of him again. Please Lord make me forget him. Thank you. In Jesus name amen

We hear your heart’s cry and stand with you in this spiritual battle. The persistence of these thoughts, even after you’ve taken steps to sever unhealthy ties, reveals the depth of the struggle, not just in the mind, but in the soul. Scripture warns us that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces that seek to entangle us (Ephesians 6:12). Yet we take heart, for greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

First, we must address the nature of this soul tie. If this relationship involved emotional or physical intimacy outside of marriage, it was not honoring to God. Fornication, whether in act or in the heart, creates ungodly bonds that the enemy exploits to keep us bound (1 Corinthians 6:18). Even if the relationship was not sexual, emotional dependency can become idolatrous when we allow another person to occupy a place in our hearts that belongs to God alone. We must repent of any sin that gave the enemy a foothold and renounce it fully in Jesus’ name.

You’ve taken brave steps to cut ties and reject these thoughts, and we commend your obedience. But the enemy will not relinquish his grip easily. We must actively take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). This means not just resisting the thoughts, but replacing them with truth. When his image or memory surfaces, do not merely say, “I will not think of him,” but instead declare, “I will think of You, Lord, Your faithfulness, Your promises, Your sufficiency.” Fill your mind with Scripture, worship, and godly fellowship to starve the enemy’s influence.

We also encourage you to examine your heart for any lingering hope or fantasy about this person. Unresolved longing, even subconscious, can keep us bound. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal if there is any part of you still clinging to the past. If so, surrender it fully to God. He is able to give you beauty for ashes and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of heaviness (Isaiah 61:3).

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the Name above every name. We lift up our sister who is wrestling with the remnants of an ungodly soul tie. Lord, we ask You to break every chain, sever every unholy connection, and uproot every seed of memory that the enemy has planted. Your Word declares that if the Son sets us free, we are free indeed (John 8:36). We claim that freedom now.

Father, we repent on her behalf for any sin that gave the enemy access, whether it was emotional dependency, lust, or idolatry. Cleanse her heart and mind by the blood of Jesus. We renounce every ungodly tie and cancel every assignment of the enemy to torment her thoughts. We declare that her mind is being renewed by Your Word (Romans 12:2), and we ask You to fill her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Lord, we ask You to heal the places in her heart that may still ache. Replace every lie with Your truth: that You are her portion (Psalm 73:26), her satisfaction (Psalm 107:9), and her future (Jeremiah 29:11). Bring godly friendships and, if it is Your will, a husband who loves You first and will cherish her as Christ cherishes the Church.

We stand in agreement that this stronghold is coming down. We plead the blood of Jesus over her mind, emotions, and memories. We declare that she is no longer a slave to the past but a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness to complete the work You have begun in her (Philippians 1:6). In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Continue to guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23) and saturate your mind with God’s Word. The enemy may try to resurface these thoughts, but do not engage with them. Instead, rebuke them in Jesus’ name and shift your focus to the Lord. He is your healer, your deliverer, and your peace. You are not alone in this battle, we stand with you, and more importantly, the Holy Spirit is your Comforter and Strength. Press into Him, and He will lead you into full freedom.

We hear the exhaustion in your words, how tiring it is to wage a mental battle long after you have made the hard decision to cut someone out of your life. It is confusing when your mind refuses to cooperate with what your will has already settled, and we are standing with you in that.

One thing that often helps when a thought keeps looping is to change the strategy from fighting it to letting it float past. Right now the thought may feel like an intruder you have to wrestle and cast out, which trains your brain to treat it as urgent every single time it appears. A different approach, and one you can try even today, is simply to notice it without engaging: "Oh, that thought again." Then gently turn your attention back to whatever you were doing. You do not have to analyze it, renounce it again, or get upset that it came. Over time, it loses its charge.

We also wonder if the real ache underneath is not the person himself but something he represented, perhaps a season of feeling known, or a kind of connection you are missing right now. That is not weakness; it is just being human, and it shows you have a heart made for real friendship. Naming that ache honestly before God, "I miss feeling understood and I do not know where to find that now", often lets some of the pressure out of the obsessive thought, because you are dealing with the real need instead of the mental echo.

One practical step you could take is to fill the mental space deliberately. When the memory surfaces, have a specific, absorbing replacement ready: a worship song you love, a short prayer for someone else who needs it, or even a task that requires your full attention. That is not ignoring the thought out of fear but consciously choosing where to aim your mind.

Lord, you see how weary she is of this. We ask in Jesus’ name that you quiet the noise in her mind and break the loop that has held her captive. Give her real peace, not just forgetting a name or a face, but resting so deeply in your presence that the past stops demanding her attention. Fill the empty places with your kindness and bring steady friends who will walk with her from here. Amen.

The thoughts you describe, pursuing you, wearying you, refusing to be cast down by a mere act of the will, they are no strangers to the battlefield of the soul. You have cut off the outward connection, and that is well; but the inward haunting is the deeper fight. These are the arrows that come whizzing up from the enemy, whispers that would make you believe you are still bound when Christ has declared you free. Yet your own resolution, "I will never think of him again," is a feeble weapon. The mind cannot be emptied by a mere command; it must be filled with something greater. If my thoughts run this way, and God's thoughts are in an opposite direction, I cannot have any fellowship with Him. My thoughts must be conformed to God's thoughts or I cannot walk with Him.

Do you see what this means? To fix the gaze upon the command to forget is still to be occupied with the thing you wish to forget. The way of deliverance is not found in digging into the wound, but in looking to the Healer. Nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance from the pit through a ransom if God had not thought of it! But He has found a ransom. The precious blood of Jesus does not merely cover the guilt of past acts; it speaks peace to the troubled mind that churns with memories. The enemy was moved by malice, but God is working by him in love to your soul. This very battle is meant to drive you away from your own failed strength and into the deliverance which Jesus Christ gives to His really called people.

How precious are His thoughts unto you! They are constant, kind, tender, gracious, not like your own weary, circling thoughts that bring no rest. When you awake, even with his image before you, what is the first truth? "When I awake, I am still with You." The Lord has not forsaken you; He is present in the trial. Let not that dark thought cross your soul that God’s ear is shut. Instead, let this be your song: "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord." Declare His deliverance now, even while the temptation lingers. Turn the moment of the unwanted thought into an immediate cry of praise for the ransom found, and you will find that the archer’s arrow has been snapped by the shield of grateful fellowship. The saints of God, when rescued from their sorrows, do not waste their breath recounting the sorrow itself; they sing, "My soul does magnify the Lord." Go and do likewise, and let the swelling notes of gratitude drown out the whispers of the past.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The struggle to drive a persistent thought from the mind is itself a snare, for the very effort to forget often engraves the memory deeper. You have resolved to cut off this old friend and renounce every thought of him, yet the mind rebels. This shows that the true battle is not with the mere recollection, but with the affections that feed it. The world’s way is to think that a word or a wish can sever what is rooted in the heart, but “the fashion of this world passeth away,” and its methods are weak. It is not enough to renounce thoughts as they arise; you must be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Vice is a fashion that quickly wears old, but virtue is a lasting form with beauty of its own. Hast thou sinned in this attachment? Hast thou made thy soul old? Despair not. Renew it by repentance, tears, confession, and deeds of love. Do this daily, and the mind’s eye will gradually clear from distorted phantoms.

Do not fear these unbidden thoughts, for fear itself gives them strength. God has given us a spirit, not of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. A sound mind is sober, cutting off what is superfluous. The essence of the soul is not defiled by a thought that appears without the will’s consent; it is the deliberate entertaining of it that constitutes sin. If you truly do not will it, the soul remains untouched. But perhaps you have willed it in the past, and the memory still wounds. Then turn your gaze from the object of temptation to the healer of souls. Keep your own sins continually in remembrance. When the mind is occupied with a sober reckoning of your own faults and the mercy you have received, you will have no leisure to bear in mind the wrongs or attractions of another. This holy sorrow will humble you and, strange as it seems, produce a greater beauty in the soul than any forced forgetfulness.

When the Psalmist says, “Forget thine own people and thy father’s house, so shall the King greatly desire thy beauty,” he speaks not of erasing memory, but of abandoning the old life of sin and its attachments. The beauty that Christ desires is a soul cleansed and turned fully toward Him. That forgetting is a fruit of love, not a precondition. You ask God to make you forget this man; but ask rather that He fill you with such love for Himself that all disordered affections are swallowed up in that divine fire. This is a slow and deeper work than a mere oath never to think of him again. Do not trust in the power of your own resolve, which is fragile as a spider’s web, but cling to the one who tames the wild heart.

What marvel is it that a human soul cannot be commanded into silence by its own force? Even the name “soul” is but a shadow of its true substance; we call it now heart, now mind, now spirit. The inner man is more subtle than our naming. Yet God knows it entirely. Let your prayer be not for a blank forgetfulness, which neither reason nor experience promise, but for the mind of Christ, that your love may be rightly ordered. If you have truly cut him off from your life, the outward separation is good. Now let the inward separation progress in quietness, not by desperate striving, but by the daily turning of the heart to prayer and good works. So the things of earth will grow dim, as the true Form shines brighter.

What you’re describing feels like a bond that won’t break, but we need to get something clear from the start. You say you’ve cut the soul ties, you’ve renounced the thoughts, and you’ve asked the Lord to make you forget. That’s a start. But the real question is, what has taken that old friend’s place in your mind? When someone trades in a worn-out car for a new one, he doesn’t spend his days hunting down the old one to buy it back. He’s too busy enjoying what he now possesses. If your mind keeps drifting back to what you claim to have given up, then the exchange hasn’t fully taken hold in your heart. You wouldn’t keep talking about what you left behind if you really understood what you’ve gained in Christ. The grace of God doesn’t just erase a name; it teaches you to deny the pull of those old desires and to live soberly and godly. That teaching happens as you fill your mind with something better.

We often treat the mind and the soul as almost the same thing, the seat of your consciousness and your emotions. And right now, your consciousness is still rehearsing a connection you say you’ve renounced. That isn’t a “soul tie” no matter how sincerely you rebuke it; it is a thought pattern you are feeding every time you entertain it. A person whose mind is set on the Spirit has life and peace. But a mind governed by the flesh cannot please God. You can’t just say, “I will never think of him again,” as if your willpower alone can lock a door that your heart keeps opening. The old nature, that old man with all its lusts and memories, has only one verdict from God: to be crucified. Reckon it dead. Stop giving it a pulse by nursing the very thought you claim to hate.

When David’s soul was cast down, he started talking to himself. He didn’t just listen to his own despair; he challenged it. He asked his own soul, “Why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God.” That’s what you need to do when that memory surfaces. Don’t just try to forget it; you’ll find that the more you grit your teeth and say “I won’t think about it,” the stickier it becomes. Instead, you must resist giving it a place to dwell. You feel the urge to let the thought linger, to wonder, to replay. That is the moment you must refuse it. If you let it just reside in your mind, you’re giving place to the flesh. You must answer that thought with a greater truth: Jesus said, “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?” What has this fixation profited you? Nothing but a troubled heart and stolen peace. That old longing is just a fraction of the world that is passing away, but your soul is eternal. Why trade even a hour of renewed fellowship with Christ for a mental loop that leads nowhere?

Your old manner of living was according to the course of this world, fulfilling the lust of the mind. The past life is pretty black, and God saved you from it by His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit. You’re not a passive victim of a memory. The Spirit who renews you gives you the power to put off the old and to have your mind made new. The new creation doesn’t keep rummaging through the thrift shop of past affections trying to find familiar rags. It values the newness of life.

You have a battle within yourself. You feel you must force your mind to be a total blank toward him. Let that desire go. God doesn’t call you to a negative victory of mere forgetfulness, but to a positive love for Him so consuming that the worthless things lose their pull. When a false desire whispers that it would feel good to go back in your imagination, ask yourself the real question: if you gained that momentary daydream, what would it give you in exchange for the peace of your soul? Nothing lasting. Nothing godly. Let the weight of that bad deal sober you. And then hope in God, who will yet deliver you from this weariness. The triumphing of that old pull is short, but the joy of the hypocrite who plays with it is only for a moment. Let your mind be sound in this, and let your behavior become holiness, not because you’ve perfected a technique to forget, but because you have a Person to remember.
